eriol's name is written as エリオルー in katakana because eriol is english; katakana is most often used for foreign words. kanji are symbols that are adopted from chinese and have full meanings on their own (generally) while hiragana is used for natively japanese words and represent sounds (like syllables) that need to be put together to have meaning, like an alphabet. katakana is just another alphabet thats used in different situations from hiragana. hope that helps ^^;;
