So my rector was telling a story today in church about a woman who married a Methodist pastor. She was a Sunday school teacher while he preached, and a lot of people liked her.
When her husband died, the congregation appointed her as pastor. She accepted. She preached for a few years, and once the church needed a plumber to fix a toilet. She called a plumber in.
The plumber looked at her and asked where the pastor was. She said, "I'm the pastor."
"No you can't be the pastor," the plumber said, "St. Paul said that women cannot be pastors."
"I'm the pastor," she repeated.
"No, you can't be," the plumber protested, "St. Paul said it's an abomination that women should presume to be able to teach men!"
"I'm the pastor."
"But you can't be! Your face isn't covered! St. Paul said that women who don't have their faces covered are also abominations!"
And she finally told him, "God keep you, honey. St. Paul didn't call me, Jesus did."
