  hi hello anon! this is the sort of question that likely varies with one's own interpretation, but yes, enjolras is more multi-faceted in the brick; the role is somewhat altered and streamlined in the musical for the purposes of speeding up marius' story.

hugo's lengthy characterization doesn't make enjolras softer, though. he's "a charming young man, who was capable of being terrible," with a "pontifical and warlike nature, a singular thing in a youth...an officiating priest and a man of war...a soldier of the democracy; above the contemporary movement, the priest of the ideal...woe to the love-affair which should have risked itself beside him!"

the uncompromising musical-enjolras, who goads his friends towards revolution, chastises grantaire for indulgence, leads the rebellious charge and values an idealized republic above all is certainly an accurate way to abridge the unyielding literary leader hugo created.

i'd argue that enjolras doesn't simply see other people as tools -- but he does value certain skill sets/philosophies over others (those that fit his plans), because he's ultimately working to achieve great ends (so he's not going to condone "drink with me," which is sentimental, navel-gazing, and introduces doubt to the cause he is so certain of). if i had to summarize how i perceive enjolras' drive in a sentence it would be "the ends justify the means." 

he believes in a utopian sort of future, and has sacrificed a life of privilege for the cause ("[he] was an only son and wealthy"); he expects no less of the others. but we know him to be charming alongside the capacity to be terrible, and he is surely charismatic, compelling and fiercely able to have taken the lead in the first place and found such a following (of such worthy gentlemen, too). if he prizes an impossible, almost inhuman ideal of human existence and conduct, that's intentional. i believe we're supposed to admire enjolras, but not necessarily like him (bold as fire/cold as ice). he's not a Nice Cuddly Person. that's what we have the rest of the amis for, shown by the immediate contrast of combeferre's similar-yet-very-different character immediately following enjolras' description:
