emhyr is pretty particular about his appearance. his wardrobe is extensive but not varied, as in he owns 10 robes that are exactly the same except for tiny changes to the fabric or lining

i've mentioned before that emhyr loves art, he also has a really good grasp on colour theory that he uses to terrorize the palace's tailors. he will notice and he will tell you if something is one shade darker than he wanted.

since he got back to a full-time human, he's kept the same haircut. if he likes how it looks, why change it?

he can tell emhyr's mood by what he wears, for example, liquorice trousers instead of onyx? full mental breakdown

emhyr really hates showing skin. he usually wears gloves, long trousers, boots, and a long sleeve robe all year. it started when he didn't want anyone to see the unfortunate quills, but he kept it because ew change

ok so much of this is based on my emhyr is autistic headcanon

also when he moved to the north it was way colder than he was used to and the emperor of nilfgaard shouldn't be shivering damnit

emhyr himself is largely responsible for the nilfgaardian distaste for flashy clothing. he just doesn't see the point in it! bright dyes and patterns are expensive and don't make the clothes any more durable or warm, so why bother?

besides, he spent a solid chunk of his life wearing stolen cloaks and potato sacks, it's kind of weird to have overtly luxurious clothing, even years later

he hated ciri's portrait almost as much as she did, but felt obligated to keep it

he does need a Lot of cajoling to wear the more formal robes for high-profile events. he doesn't really see the difference between his everyday emperor-ing and his fancy emperor-ing. it's not like he goes through daily life dressed as a vagabond!

everything about what emhyr wears has a practical application, even if it's one that doesn't make sense to anybody but him
