Dream got caught by c!Quackity / c!Sam and dragged back to prison, during this process, Quackity took off most of Dream’s wings to restrain him.

Sam and Quackity both then had to defend the prison from attack from the syndicate, leaving Dream alone.

XD, realizing something was wrong, showed up pretty quickly extremely upset that his hardwork had been ruined. Dream was pretty out of it, so he doesn’t remember any of this, but XD asked what happened and got a very vague reply.

Obvious, XD can’t stand for this, so he regrows the wings and add the poison effect + protection to deter anyone else from trying this again.

Quackity returns to the cell, intending to use Dream as a hostage to halt the syndicate advancing.

Wait

How does Dream have wings again???

Quackity sets about removing them a second time, and almost fucking dies from the poison. His axe didn’t even do anything to the wings.

Sam also tries to do something, only to met the same result.

Dream, whose only just woken up and has only the faintest memory of XD, is equally confused but takes advantage of it to drive Sam / Quackity away from him.

So, Dream is now left alone in his cell, and Sam / Quackity are indisposed.

Having noticed Quackity’s axe didn’t hurt him, Dream acts on an impulse and sticks half his wing into the lava to see what happens.

The answer is the wing repeals lava.

Dream takes 2 seconds to process this, then uses his wings as an umbrella to exit the cell safely. It doesn’t even set off the alarm.

He gets out of the prison pretty quickly after that, and jumpscares the hell out of c!Techno whose currently trying to break into the prison.

Techno, shocked to see Dream alive and his wings intact, reaches out to touch him on impulse, and also gets poisoned by the feathers.

Great. 

Oh this is interesting-calling the whumpees what they are since that makes it easier

•At first,neither of them are willing to cooperate with each other,the angel can’t help but see the demon as a disgusting entity that they were born to fight while the demon is too proud to admit their predicament.The first one to break is the demon,the angel’s entire life isn’t being put at risk,demotion maybe but the demon is the one that could very well die if nothing is done.The angel doesn’t care for a while,feeling completely apathetic when the demon is dragged off by the whumper.

•The angel finally starts plotting when they see the condition the demon is in by the end of the week,they know that nobody is going to search for the demon because that’s not the nature of their kind,the only comfort they can give the demon is that due to their rank somebody is going to realize that the angel is missing and look for them,it really doesn’t help the starving demon but it’s somewhat comforting.

•The angel is treated significantly better than the demon,yes they’re both tortured but the demon is given little to no food or water,the angel is forced to see the demon deteriorate in front of them and it just feels awful.The angel starts putting down their own emotions,how can they feel pity for themselves when the person in front of them has had their wings torn off.

XD would know that c!Dream did himself, and he'd be confused/concerned about it. His first instinct would be to assume Dream was forced to do it, and evaluate the circumstances around the removal.

Odds are, he wouldn't be wrong. While c!Dream does want the wings gone, he's not stupid enough to do it himself. He would want them removed by someone with a medical history of some kind, and he'd want them removed in a safe manner. The only reason he'd remove them himself would be if he was forced by a person or by circumstance (ie the wings were caught in something and it was his only way out).
