“Replace you? Why, Piter, where could I find another Mentat with your cunning and venom?”
"The same place you found me, Baron.”
“Perhaps I should at that,” the Baron mused. “You do seem a bit unstable lately. And the spice you eat!”
"Are my pleasures too expensive, Baron? Do you object to them?”
“My dear Piter, your pleasures are what tie you to me. How could I object to that? I merely wish my nephew to observe this about you.”
"Then I'm on display,” Piter said. “Shall I dance? Shall I perform my various functions for the eminent Feyd-Rau—”
“Precisely,” the Baron said. “You are on display. Now, be silent.”
Frank Herbert
Dune lore is fucking insane. I just finished the first book, and have concluded that Frank Herbert is a goddamn genius.
20,000 years in the future.
Matriarchal cult of eugenisist space-nuns with weird psychic powers
Houses that resemble the royalty of medieval earth, all still obsessed with power and profit over everything else
complex religions with clear inspirations of real-world present religions (specifically catholicism and islam)
Human supercomputers?? that are also assassins??
A prison planet that creates supersoldiers by killing the weak to filter out the strongest
the main villain being the physical embodiment of sin (gluttony, lust, greed)
politics. holy war. oppression of native peoples. false prophets. cults. drugs. worms.
and that just scratches the surface. theres five more books…
Kiss the boot of shiny, shiny leather.
Shiny leather in the dark.
That Time I Worked with Jeffrey Combs
One of the cooler things I've done while writing for Dune: Awakening, is get to work in the recording booth with the Re-Animator himself, Jeffrey Combs. The whole situation manifested strangely.
I wrote the Twisted Mentat character Zayn De Witte. When I write a character, I often think of some actor or character as a starting point. It's not something I tell the eventual voice actor, just a springboard to develop a voice as I write.
For Zayn, my springboard was Jeffrey Combs, specifically his character Milton Dammers from the film The Frighteners. It's important to remember, I did NOT tell anyone on the team I had Combs in mind. This was just a voice to reference and read back dialogue to myself as I wrote it.
Time passes. A teammate messages me about casting and says, "Hey, what do you think of Jeffrey Combs for this part?" What!? Did I manifest this? Am I the god-monster-boy from The Twilight Zone?
The recording session was awesome. I allowed myself a little bit of geeking out at the top of it, particularly over the audio of Mr. Combs's one-man show as Edgar Allan Poe. He was surprised and delighted I'd listened to it.
Looking over the Zayn dialogue, he said it gave him Milton Dammers vibes. Then we got to it. He was lovely to work with.

D&D x DUNE
🏜️ DUNE 🏜️
Sometimes called the Lord of the Rings of science fiction, Frank Herbert's magnum opus, Dune, offers a number of unique and excellent ideas for even the most adamantly anti-sci-fi D&D player. The universe presented shows a depth of detail rarely seen in contemporary fiction. Everything and everyone has a history, giving the reality in which the novel's events occur the same weight of minutiae experienced when exploring a world as detailed as the FORGOTTEN REALMS. Dune traces the path of young Paul Atreides from 15-year-old ducal heir on the water-rich planet of Caladan to his rise as a young man who becomes messiah-emperor on the desert planet Arrakis—Dune itself. Along the way, the novel packs in political intrigue, betrayal, murder, and a little philosophy. Alongside his mother, the Lady Jessica, Paul escapes into the death-dealing desert wilderness, where they come under the protection of Stilgar of the Fremen. Under the tutelage of both Jessica and Stilgar, Paul embraces and reworks the Fremen way even as Fremen culture embraces and reworks him. Like any great adventure fiction, Dune also packs in lots of cool and imaginative concepts. Many of these ideas easily translate to D&D, from Stillsuits to Defensive Shields. Of course, the most evocative aspect of Dune is the spice called Melange and its cycle of creation and use. The following presents a way for you to use a similar cycle in your D&D game.
I wanted to write a Feyd x Mentat!Reader one shot but then I realized I would somehow have to portray that I was as smart as a Mentat
House Harkonnen reporting in! 💰 https://keyrelic.etsy.com
Solid Bronze Harkonnen Ram Artisan Keycap with RGB shine through eyes.
A homage to Dune II and Dune 2000 games from legendary Westwood studio. Dune II was a precursor for Real-Time Strategy games. For many, those games were the first contact with the Dune Universe and they still have a special place in our hearts.
House Harkonnen, also known as the Family Harkonnen, was a Great House of the Landsraad, with their capital on the heavily industrialized Giedi Prime. The Harkonnens were the historical enemies of House Atreides of Caladan, with whom they maintained an ancient feud since the Battle of Corrin. They also came to be recognized for their underhanded and sinister political tactics, fueled by ambition, malevolence, hatred, and brutality. ⚜️Great for collectors: can be passed down from generation to generation.
