{DISCLAIMER: While no offense is intended by this character blog, I would still like to state that this is a real illness that people suffer from in real life, every day, just like other mood or personality disorders or other forms of mental illness. I am not a doctor, nor is any negative or hurtful thing intended by this post. This is simply what I find to be the most realistic explanation for this fictional character's actions. }
Doctor Crane suffers severely from Dissociative Identity Disorder. The Scarecrow is his only other identity, which means that time is split fairly evenly between them. His switches to the Scarecrow identity are erratic, factoring in stress levels and other things, however, they are not spontaneous. He has very specific triggers.
Crane's DID was developed primarily by the frequent severe traumatic events of his childhood and adolescence. As he got older, he noticed the time lapses and other unusual phenomena (as anyone studying to become a psychiatrist would), but attributed them mainly to lack of sleep from medical school, stress, and other common things.Â
He was completely shocked when he was convicted of crimes and serial murders that he committed when the Scarecrow identity was in charge, and upon seeing footage on surveillance cameras while in court when he had no recollection of the events. Because insanity or "multiple personality" pleas are so common, no one, not even his attorney, believed that he was telling the truth about what had happened. He was exceptionally lucky to get sentenced to Arkham Asylum instead of Blackgate Prison, but he was sent there primarily because the judge believed the Blackgate inmates would rape or murder him to death should he be sent there and they wished to avoid any incident, not because his plea of mental instability was actually believed or accepted.
