In Memory of Elizabeth Webb (1834 - 1909) Deaf and Mute Servant Elizabeth Webb could neither hear nor speak. Little is known of her background, there was no known family, and she had worked as a lowly servant in the city of Bath since girlhood. When she became too infirm to be of use as a servant, the future looked bleak. Fortunately a ‘Deaf and Dumb Society’ had been formed in Bath and opened a home ‘to accommodate poor deaf and dumb women who would otherwise have dragged out an isolated existence in various workhouses’. Elizabeth was given a place there. After several contented years at the home, Elizabeth showed signs of mental illness and was sent to the workhouse hospital where according to a Dr Craddock, she became “violent towards the nurses and other patients, biting and scratching them… she is unmanageable and dangerous. She knocked one patient down and scratched her. Requires incessant supervision or will not stop in bed at night”. Elizabeth was sent on to the Wells Asylum, admitted there on September 2nd 1908, aged 75. She was certainly frightened and very suspicious of other people. Perhaps a flashback to how she may have been treated when young and vulnerable. It’s hard to say “Me Too” when deaf and dumb. The care she received at the Asylum seems first rate, her fears diminished by gentle care, becoming happy and comfortable in her surroundings. Elizabeth died 9.30pm, April 16th 1909, aged 75. Elizabeth Webb was buried on 22nd April in section E, grave number 313. The Bath Deaf and Dumb Society did not forget her and provided a stone memorial inscribed with this sad but beautiful epitaph: “THROUGH TRIAL AND TRIBULATION TO A HAVEN OF REST” See comments for Elizabeth's casebook history.
