Sitting at the foot of the bed you ran your hands over the plush covers. Looking around the room at the lavish furniture, all mahogany wood and deep rich colours. You couldnât even begin to imagine the cost of everything.Â
It felt more like a fancy hotel than somewhere you would live. You were scared to touch anything in case you broke something.Â
A knock on the door pulls you from your thoughts âhey how are you feeling?â Ransom asks poking his head in.
âUm⊠a bit out of my depthâ you admit with a deep sigh.
âNothing triggering a memory?â Ransom asks as he walks over and sits down beside you on the bed.
âNo sorry, it's not even familiar, any of itâ you apologise shaking your head.
âIt's okay you donât need to apologise, the doctor said not to push it remember,â Ransom says gently rubbing your back.
The sensation of it feels familiar reassuring you slightly. Quietening that little voice in your head that was telling you something was wrong. While you didnât know Ransom he was familiar, allowing you to trust him.
âPlus we never really used this roomâ Ransom sighed glancing around the room âI just thought youâd be more comfortable in the guest bedroom since itâs kinda like weâre strangers againâÂ
âThank you, I appreciate it and hopefully it wonât be for too long,â you say reaching out to put your hand on his knee.
You see a warm smile grow on his lips at the contact âmaybe I should try and win you over againâ he smirks making you chuckle.
âWas it difficult the first time?â You ask him.
âYes, the first time we met you called me a trust fund prickâ Ransom chuckled shaking his head.
You laugh, eyes narrowing as a semblance of a memory surfaces. A quick flash of Ransom dressed up in a suit leaning against a bar.Â
âBut I donât blame you, I was a prick until I met youâ Ransom sighs smiling over at you warmly.
âCan you tell me more? About that night?â You ask hopefully.
Ransom smiles nodding his head âit was this charity event, everyone all dressed up to the ninesâ Ransom recalls, the memory of him in your head feeling more fresh âyou looked stunning in this deep velvet red dress, you werenât like the other girls dressed up in big designer brands, you were understated but still the most beautiful girl in the roomâÂ
You nod along to the story, every detail making sense to you. The fact that you werenât one for all this grandeur. Preferring to be modest in style and sensibility.
âI knew I had to talk to you so I went over to you, ready to talk the big game,â Ransom says before laughing and shaking his head.
âWhat happened?â You ask a smile on your face as you watch him laugh.
âYou shot me down before I even got a chanceâ Ransom chuckled looking over at you warmly, âyou told me that you knew exactly who I was and that you wouldnât be caught dead with meâÂ
You laugh at that shaking your head âwell something clearly changedâ you chuckle.
âYeah after a lot of grovelling I convinced you to go on a date and the rest is historyâ Ransom explains with a sigh of contentment.
âHow long have we been together now?â You ask him.
âJust over a year now, a guess it was a bit of a whirlwind romance,â Ransom says with a shrug of his shoulders âbut let's stop reminiscing, for now, we donât want to overwhelm you, Iâll sort out some food for us downstairsâÂ
âYou cooked?â You ask surprised.
Ransom laughs shaking his head âNo Iâm a terrible cook, you did all the cooking and Iâd occasionally order in, Iâll order your favourite thoughâ Ransom winks as he stands up from the bed holding out his hand to you.
For a moment you hesitated, your eyes meeting his icy blue eyes. You found yourself searching his face like youâd been doing ever since you woke up. He gives you another reassuring and winning smile before you reach out and take his hand, letting him lead you downstairs.
You let him lead you into the living room, sitting down on the couch. As you sat he leaned down slightly, his lips pursed and you realise he was moving to kiss your forehead, but he stopped short remembering the situation. You watched as he swallowed nervously, a conflicted look on his face as he nodded and moved away towards the kitchen.Â
You looked over your shoulder as you watched him go, the feeling of guilt washing over you. On one hand, you felt so grateful that he was taking this at your pace, he wasn't trying to rush you, one the other hand you felt horrible as you watched him suffer. You weren't the version of you that he knew, and you could see he was struggling. You wanted to take the pain he felt away, but you didn't know how.Â
âHey, Dory do you want spring rolls?â Ransom called out his phone pressed to his ear.Â
âDory?â you ask confused.Â
You watch as Ransom winces shaking his head âShit sorry kitten, itâs the nickname you go byâ he explains.Â
âOh okay, uh yes please to the spring rollsâ you mutter nodding your head.Â
Ransom gives you a small smile nodding his head as he turns away, finishing the order. Once he was done he walked back over to the couch he knelt down in front of you, hesitantly putting his hand on your knee.Â
âIâm really sorry about calling you Dory, I know it probably seemed like a real stupid thing to say and was really insensitive given the circumstancesâ Ransom sighed shaking his head.Â
You shake your head resting your hand on top of his âNo itâs okay, I know this is difficult for you too, things like that will slip out without you meaning it, and if it's anything I didnât think you were calling me a forgetful fishâ you tell him earning a small laugh from him.Â
âI am curious as to where it came from thoughâ you admit.Â
âWell you never liked the name Dororthy and didn't like Dot or Dottie either so when you were in middle school and looked up nicknames for Dorothy and found Dory, the fish came secondâ Ransom explains as he moves to sit next to you on the couch.Â
You let out a small huff of a laugh âthat sounds about rightâ you chuckle.Â
Ransom smiles squeezing your hand gently âIâm glad to hear that, Iâm sure things will start coming back to you soon enoughâ.Â
Once dinner arrived you and Ransom talked and laughed, he was telling you different stories about his family and his past. Answering every question you sent his way with a warm smile on his face.Â
âHey look I know this is might not be the right time but I want to show you something,â Ransom says, his hands running over his trousers.Â
âOh uh yeah sure, what is it?â you ask biting your lip nervously.Â
âThisâ Ransom says passing you a small velvet box.Â
You gulp slightly as you take the small box, you already had a good idea of what it contained but you were still nervous. Taking a deep but shaky breath you open the box, your eyes landing on the large and elaborate engagement ring.Â
âWhoaâ you mutter staring down at the ring.Â
âYou donât have to put it on, or anything I just thought you might want it eventually and I wanted it to be your decisionâ Ransom explained.
âHow-how did you get it? Was I wearing it in the accident?â you ask confused.Â
âNo, you had taken it off and thrown it back at me before the accident,â Ransom says looking down in shame.Â
âWas it that big of an argument? What was it even about?â you ask.Â
âMy family, you wanted me to introduce you to them but I didn't want toâ Ransom sighs.Â
âI haven't met your family? But weâre engaged arenât we?â you question shaking your head in confusion.Â
âThatâs exactly why we were arguing, you said it was wrong that I hadnât introduced you and had no plans to, you said that if you were joining my family you needed to at least meet them first, it all got a bit intense and you stormed outâ Ransom explains âbut you were right, no matter how unbearable they can be theyâre still my family and you need to meet them before weâŠâ he says before trailing off at the end.Â
âRightâ you mutter glancing down at the ring in your hands.Â
âBut look to make it right Iâll introduce you to them as soon as youâre feeling a little better, and donât worry about the ring you do whatever you feel comfortable with,â Ransom says nodding down to the box.Â
You nod your head glancing up at him, giving him a small smile âthank youâ you mutter.Â
Looking back down at the ring you take a deep breath, you werenât sure what to do. You had to admit it was a beautiful ring but the idea of you wearing it just felt foreign, you needed more time. You needed to get to know Ransom a bit more, you needed to relearn your life with him. You needed time and you were grateful that Ransom was giving you that, and he was taking steps to right his wrongs.Â
You had been staying with Ransom for 4 weeks now, physically you were much better but you still didn't remember much. You saw flashes of your life from when you were younger but they often didnât much sense and you werenât sure what order they were supposed to be in.Â
One good thing though was that you and Ransom had found a comfortable rhythm. You had found a good routine and it felt normal when you woke up, went downstairs and found him making you a cup of coffee.Â
There was that air of awkwardness though, one minute youâd be laughing together the next heâd be looking back at you with a conflicted expression on his face. The two of you were more like friends than boyfriend and girlfriend, and you could tell he was really struggling.Â
âHey, how do you feel about meeting my family tomorrow?â Ransom asked as he walked into the kitchen.Â
âHm?â you hum as you look up from the stirfry you were cooking, as much as you appreciated Ransom sorting dinner out, you couldn't take another takeaway.Â
âMy family, I want to introduce you to them as I promised youâ Ransom explains.Â
âOh okay,â you say surprised.Â
âOnly if youâre feeling up to it,â Ransom says quickly âI wouldn't want to push you into something you arenât ready for yet, and I know my family can be a bit intenseâ
âNo, no Iâd love to, I was just surprised that's all,â you say turning to face him.Â
âAre you sure? Weâre supposed to have this family dinner on Sunday, I was going to miss it but maybe we could go then?â Ransom suggests.Â
âYeah that sounds goodâ you smile nodding your head âand thank you Ransom,â you say putting your hand on his arm âit really means a lot, I mean it's a step closer to getting this on trackâ
Ransomâs gaze dips to your hand on his arm, a surprised look on his face and you couldnât blame him. Youâd only recently gotten more comfortable being tactile with him, it was like your body was naturally moving to him for comfort.Â
âAnd- and what should I introduce you as? I mean the lines are a little blurry at the momentâ Ransom points out.Â
Ransom reaches out to take your left hand, his thumb brushing over your skin, specifically the space where your ring would sit âare you sure?â he asks quietly.Â
âOf course, no point making it any more confusing than it already isâ you reassure him, twisting your hand in his and squeezing.Â
âThank you kittenâ Ransom breathes out his eyes meeting yours.
You could see the hesitation in his eyes as he held himself back from kissing you, and for a moment you wished he wouldnât. You wanted him to press a gentle kiss to your forehead, but the moment passed and he took a step back.Â
âDinner smellâs amazing, Iâve always loved your cooking,â Ransom says as you move to serve up.Â
âWell, Iâm glad it's not something Iâve had to relearn, it's like riding a bikeâ you smile.
âMe too, I canât keep a figure this good on takeout aloneâ Ransom smirks gesturing down to his body.Â
âYes, it's amazing that you managed to survive without meâ you smirk giving him a playful look.Â
Ransom lets out a small huff of a laugh, smiling warmly over at you âwell I did always say I was lucky to have found youâÂ
You feel your heart skip a beat as you smiled back at him âI think Iâm pretty lucky to have you tooâÂ
Ransom arches a brow in disbelief âreally? Iâm not everyoneâs favourite person, you didnât even like me to begin withâ he points out.Â
âReally, I mean you have been nothing but gentle and supportive to me, Iâm in such a vulnerable position right now but with you⊠I feel safe,â you tell him with a smile.Â
Ransom smiles back at you âIâm really glad you feel that way, when I first found out you had amnesia I was so scared, I thought Iâd lost you and that youâd hate me and never want to see meâ he says his voice catching slightly as he looked down at the floor.Â
âHey, hey,â you say stepping towards him, pulling him into a hug âI donât think Iâd ever hate you, even when I first woke up I knew you felt familiar, I knew I could trust youâ you reassure him.Â
You feel him completely relax into the hug, his arms wrapping securely around your waist, his face buried in the crook of your neck. You could hear him muttering thank your under his breath, his lips brushing against your skin making you shiver.Â
ââCâmon let's eat before it gets cold,â you say quietly, squeezing his arms.Â
That Sunday Ransom drove you to his grandfatherâs house. As he pulled up to the grand house, your eyes widened in surprise.
âThis is where your grandfather lives?â You ask shocked.
âYeah guess all those books are good for somethingâ Ransom winks as he pulls up and puts the car in park ânow câmonâ
You give him a quick smile before climbing out of the car. Rising to your full height you startle when you hear barking off to your side. You watch as two large german shepherds run straight over to Ransom, barking and jumping up at him.
âHey no stop it! Fuck off!â Ransom growls down at the dogs as he tries to ward them off.
âOh donât be so mean theyâre just saying helloâ you scold lightly, holding out your hand to the dogs to sniff.
The dogs sniff your hand before beginning to wag their tails and nuzzling their heads into your hands âsee, theyâre good boysâ you tell him.
Ransom huffs in annoyance muttering under his breath âassholesâÂ
You roll your eyes at him before holding out your hand to him, watching as a small smile grows on his face.
âReady for this?â Ransom asks nodding towards the house.
You look towards the imposing and impressive house taking a deep and steadying breath before nodding âyeah⊠yeah I amâ
Ransom smiles his thumb brushing over your skin, he looks back to the house nodding âitâs only a couple of hoursâ he says as the two of you start walking over.
âAre you talking to me or yourself?â You smirk as you walk up the porch steps.
Ransom gives you a lopsided smirk âbothâ he says before opening the front door.
As you step inside you see a woman carrying a tray full of drink, she looked over to you, jumping suddenly âoh Hugh, I- I didnât think you were comingâ
You frown slightly in confusion glancing up at Ransom who had an annoyed expression on his face âwell Fran as you can clearly see, I am here, and there better be enough spaces set for Doryâ Ransom states gesturing towards you.
âYes⊠yes, of course, Iâll make sure there isâ she nods, her steps faltering as she couldnât decide to finish taking the drinks through or complete Ransomâs demand, before finally turning and walking away.
âWhy did she call you Hugh?â You ask once she was gone.
âIt's my first name, but only the help call me it, everyone else calls me Ransom, it's my middle nameâ Ransom explains as he shrugs off his coat, throwing it onto a nearby chair.
âOh okay, Ransom is a nicer name,â you say stuttering slightly as he moves to help you take your coat off.
âIâm glad you agreeâ Ransom smirks.
âRansom is that you?â You hear a woman call out, followed by the sound of heels clicking against the floor, Ransom lets out a small groan his shoulders dropping.
You turn to see a woman with short white hair, wearing a dark blue monochrome pantsuit walking down the corridor, her brows furrowing and lips moving to a thin straight line when she saw you.
âWho are you?â She states nodding curtly in your direction.
You stutter unable to find your words, your lips seemingly unable to even say your name.
âMother, this is Dory, sheâs my guest, Dory this is Linda my loving mother,â Ransom says with a tone of sarcasm.
âHi lovely to meet you,â you say holding your hand out toward her.
Linda narrows her eyes at you before completely ignoring you and looking at Ransom âRansom your grandfather will not appreciate you bringing your latest piece of ass to a family dinnerâ she says whispering loud enough that you still heard every word.
You gulp nervously looking up at Ransom who was staring coldly back at his mother, his jaw clenched in annoyance âDory is not just a piece of ass, Iâll explain everything to everyone in a minuteâÂ
Linda glances back over at you before scoffing under her breath and spinning on her heel back in the direction she came.
âWowâ you mutter under your breath once she was gone, letting out a shaky breath.
You knew Ransomâs family wasnât the nicest from the little information he gave you but you werenât expecting such a cold welcome. Especially from his own mother.
âwe can still go if you wantâ Ransom offers, squeezing your hand reassuringly.
âNoâŠâ you say quietly before clearing your throat âNo Iâm fine, itâll look bad if we leave nowâ you say shaking your head.
Ransom smiles gently âIâll be right here, and Iâll tell them to eat shit if they get out of lineâ he smirks making you chuckle gently.
âThank you, câmon thenâ you breathe out.
Ransom squeezes your hand once more before leading you down the corridor in the direction Linda had gone. As you turn the corner you spot the rest of his family sitting in the lavish living room. They had clearly been mid-conversation about you as they all fell silent once you walked in, 9 sets of eyes all settling on you. 7 of which definitely werenât warm.Â
âRansom Iâm glad you could make it,â an old man says from his armchair, a warm smile on his face âand I see youâve brought companyâ he adds nodding to you.
âWell you know I can never stay away too long grandfatherâ Ransom smiles âand I thought it was a good time to introduce everyoneâÂ
âWell let me start dear, Iâm Harlan, and this is my nurse and friend Martaâ Harlan smiles introducing himself and the only other person who gave you a warm smile.
âHi Iâm uh Dorothy, but please call me Dory,â you say smiling awkwardly.
âDory what an interesting name, and how do you know our Ransom?â Harlan asks.
You heard someone muttering under their breath, you didnât catch what they said but going by the way Ransomâs grip on your hand tightened, it couldnât have been nice.
âHow are we only just meeting her now!â Linda exclaims gesturing in your direction.
âWell thatâs where the situation gets a bit more complicatedâ Ransom sighs âLast month Dory was in a bad car accident and has lost all her memories, so weâre just taking things slowly at the momentâÂ
âThat doesnât explain why we never met her before todayâ a man with a cane points out.
âWell Walt, until the accident I wasnât planning on ever introducing you allâ Ransom states.
Linda lets out a shocked noise at that, clutching her chest âso you were just going to get married without any of us there!âÂ
âI donât blame himâ the young girl, who appeared about 18, or 19, muttered under her breath.
âHarlan was going to be thereâ Ransom sighs shrugging his shoulders.
âAnd not your parents!â Richard shouted gesturing between him and Linda.
âEnough!â Harlan bellows making every look back towards him âIâm sure Ransom had his reasons, now weâre not being welcoming guests, are we? Ransom why donât you introduce everyone elseâÂ
Ransom lets out a long sigh nodding his head before introducing him to the rest of his family, explaining who everyone was.
âGood, now dear it is lovely to have you hereâ Harlan smiles warmly over at you ânow let's go eatâÂ
You and Ransom hang back a moment while everyone else filters out of the room. You forced a smile when Marta walks past you, giving you a warm sympathetic smile, letting out a deep and shaky breath once they were all gone.
âHarlan seems niceâ you comment glancing up at Ransom.
âYeah, he is,â Ransom says with a small huff of a laugh âit amazes me how horrible everyone turned outâÂ
âYourself included?â You smirk playfully.
Ransom chuckles wrapping his arm around your shoulder âwell we do all have our skeletons, lucky for me I have you to keep me in lineâ he smirks âcâmon we better not keep them waiting, theyâre terrible when theyâre hangryâÂ
âEven more so?â You chuckle as Ransom leads you out and towards the grand dining room.
Walking through the door you see everyone was already sitting down, the only seats being the two down from Harlan who was sitting at the head of the table.
âPlease come sit, I saved you both a seatâ Harlan smiles holding his hand out to the empty chairs.
You give him a thankful smile as you tried to ignore the dirty looks you got from Linda and Walt who had clearly been demoted. You also didnât miss the victorious smirk Ransom gave his mother and uncle.
âThank you Harlanâ you smile as Ransom pulls out your seat for you before sitting down himself.
âItâs nothing I look forward to getting to know the woman whoâs made Ransom finally settle downâ Harlan smiles patting your hand gently âbut first Iâm starving so let's eat hm?â
You feel Ransom squeeze your knee under the table, you turned to look at him seeing a small smile on his face and a mischievous twinkle in his eyes.
As everyone ate silence fell in the room, and you kept your attention mostly on your plate. Only looking up to look at Ransom, Marta and Harlan, you didnât need to look elsewhere to know the others were still glaring daggers at you.
âSo how did the two of you meet?â Harlan asks in between mouthfuls.
âUm, it was at a charity eventâ you answer glancing over at Ransom.
âYeah but we didnât really get on to begin with, but I wore her down with my charming personalityâ Ransom explains with a playful smirk.
âHm, I doubt it was thatâ you heard someone mutter further down the table.
âI donât really remember much, but I do remember seeing him for the first time,â you say recalling the one flash of memory you had with Ransom.
âI am truly sorry to hear about it, how much do you remember?â Harlan asks you.
âNot much at all, I can remember flashes of my childhood but it doesnât really make much sense and I donât know the order, in many ways it feels like my life only started last monthâ you admit, swallowing back a lump of emotion as you looked down, only finding a small smile when Ransomâs hand found yours.
âYou know my father wrote a book where the protagonist was suffering from amnesia,â Walt says pointing his fork over towards you âshe worked for a wealthy but corrupt family, overheard something she shouldnât have and the family tried to have her killed, cut the breaks in her car, but she survived and lost her memories from the last yearâ he explains keeping his eyes solely on you.
âOh wow that um sounds interestingâ you stutter nodding your head.
âYeah, the book follows her trying to solve the mystery of her memory loss while the family do everything they can to stop herâ Walt continues.
Meg snorts from her seat âyou havenât pissed any wealthy people off have you Dory?â She asks.
You chuckle weakly ânot that I rememberâ you joke, noticing the small cracks in everyoneâs exterior as they stopped themselves from laughing.
The rest of the dinner went relatively smoothly, you managed to field all the probing questions sent your way with the help of Ransom. Eventually, the focus shifted from you to the rest of the family as they started a bragging competition.
When everyone retired back into the living room you even began to believe they had started warming to you. That belief unravelled following what should have been an innocent question.
âSo what is it you do for a living Dory?â Joni asks as she leant back in her chair, wine glass in hand.
âOh, I umâ you stutter looking over at Ransom for help.
âDory isnât currently working at the moment due to her accidentâ Ransom answers for you.
âObviously,â Joni says waving her hand âI meant before thenâÂ
âShe wasnât really working then either,â Ransom says.
âWhat?â Linda snapped, her gaze returning from cool to freezing.
âShe was in between jobs, she used to work in marketing but soon after we moved in together she decided she wanted a change, try and work out what she actually wanted to doâ Ransom explains smiling over at you warmly.
âOh son please donât tell me you fell for thatâ Richard scoffs shaking his head, âI thought you were smarter than thatâ
âExcuse me?â You choke out.
âAnyone can tell she is clearly a gold-digger, sheâs only with you for your money and inheritance!â Linda states pointing over at you accusingly.
âHey! Watch your mouth! Thatâs the love of my life your talking about!â Ransom growls.
âLove?â Richard scoffs âget out of your ass Ransom, this isnât love, sheâs using you for your money and youâre too blind to see it because sheâs someone who gives good head!â He shouts making you feel physically sick.
âHey, little ears!â Donna whines covering Jacobs's ears who didnât care.
âOh because you know everything about finding good head donât you father!â Ransom snaps standing up from his seat âyou know what all of you can go fuck off and eat shit! I didnât want to introduce you all for this exact reason! Youâre all asshats too worried about money that isnât even yours! We are extremely happy together and actually in love, a concept Iâm sure none of you understands or have experienced!â
You gulped watching in amazement as Ransom stood up for you to his family, putting them in their place. A strong feeling washed over you as you watched him, a warm sensation filling your chest.
âCâmon kitten letâs go homeâ Ransom sighs holding out his hand for you to take.
You instantly stand up taking his hand, going even further to tuck yourself into his side. Something that made his eyes widen for a split second before a warm smile crept on his face.
âGrandfather, thank you for your hospitality, Iâll make sure you get an invite to the wedding,â Ransom says to Harlan before turning to the rest of his family âand the rest of you⊠donât hold your breath waiting for a Christmas cardâÂ
Ransom didnât wait for any form of response, quickly pulling you out of the house, the door slamming loudly behind you. Once you reached the car Ransom quickly spun around his hands finding your cheeks as he looked down at you with worry in his eyes.
âHey it's okay, it's okayâ he reassured you.
You blinked a couple of times âIâm fineâ you say stuttering slightly.
âKitten, youâre shaking,â he said softly, his thumbs brushing over your cheeks.
You hadnât realised it until that moment but he was telling the truth. Your entire body was shuddering as adrenaline pumped through your veins, it wasnât until you were out of the situation that every sunk in, tears pricking in your eyes.
âHey itâs okay câmereâ Ransom sighs, wrapping his arms around you and pulling you into his embrace.
As soon as you buried your head in his chest you completely broke down. Ransom held onto you tightly, his chin resting on top of your head as his large hands ran up and down your back soothingly. As you cried you could barely hear his words of comfort and were vaguely aware of him gently kissing the top of your head.
âLet's get you home, and I promise we wonât ever see any of them again,â Ransom says looking down at you, his large hands squeezing your arms.
âThank youâ you sniffle as he opens up the car door for you.
âAnything for you kittenâ Ransom smiles.
By the time you got home you felt exhausted, your head pounding, so you told Ransom that you needed to go lie down for a while. He gave you a small smile but you could tell from the look in his eyes how concerned he was.Â
âOkay kitten, let me know if you need or want anything,â Ransom tells you.
âI will thank you Ransom,â you say with a weak smile before starting up the stairs.
When you reached the top you glance back downstairs spotting Ransom walking away, clearly unaware that you were watching as he pinched the bridge of his nose, and let out a shaky break before sniffing quickly and walking away.
Walking into your room you let out a long sigh as you walked over to your bed. Climbing onto the bed you curled up into a ball and hoped your exhaustion took over.Â
It didnât.
You tossed and turned for what felt like hours, all you wanted to do was sleep yet it completely eluded you. You just couldnât settle, you felt restless, a nervous energy building in you until you couldnât stay still any longer, jumping up from the bed to begin pacing.Â
It was on your fifth turn that your eyes settled on one of the wardrobes, specifically the one you didnât use. Compelled by an unknown force you strode over to it, opening the doors to find some of Ransom's clothes. Without thinking you reached out, your hand running over one of the soft cashmere sweaters. Your skin tingled as you felt it, the sudden urge for more overcoming you, so you grabbed it from its hanger and pulled it on.Â
Walking back towards your bed you pulled the collar of the sweater to your nose, breathing in the scent of Ransom. It was faint but it was unmistakably him. Shrouded In the warmth of his sweater the feeling of restlessness left you, and when you lay back down you finally fell asleep.
You woke a couple of hours later to the feeling of the mattress sinking down beside you and a hand gently running over your hair. You blinked a couple of times as your vision cleared, finding Ransom sitting on the edge of your bed.
âHey, I thought you might be hungry,â Ransom says gently as you rubbed the sleep from your eyes.
Your stomach rumbled at the sound of food making Ransom chuckle âit appears I thought correctly, how are you feeling?âÂ
âGood, uh yeah much better thank youâ you sat sitting up to lean against the headboard.
âGood, I am really sorry about my family, I probably should have introduced you one by one instead of in all one goâ Ransom sighs shaking his head.
âNo itâs okay, and look screw them we donât really need them, and we always have my parents,â you say before suddenly realising you hadnât heard from them at all âI mean maybe, Iâm surprised they havenât visited already unless I donât speak to them or theyâre not around anymoreâ
Ransom looks at you sadly before looking down âIâm sorryâ he mutters.
âOh⊠how? Um when?â You ask your voice weak.Â
âYour mom died a few years back, cancer, your dad didnât cope well, turned to drink and drugs ended up overdosing and didnât make itâ Ransom sighs reaching out to take your hand âit's why you were so adamant to meet my familyâ
âOh, I seeâŠâ you mutter, sniffling back your tears as grief settled over you.
âIâm so sorryâ Ransom whispered âI thought that because you hadnât mentioned it that maybe deep down you already knewâÂ
You let out a deep breath nodding your head âmaybe I did, I dunnoâ you sigh.
âBut look we have Harlan in our corner and thatâs all that matters, screw the rest,â He tells you, squeezing your hand.
âYeah⊠yeah youâre rightâ You sigh nodding your head before frowning slightly when you remembered what Walt had said âum Ransom? Are you sure your family didnât already know about me?â
Ransom frowns shaking his head âno of course not, whyâd you ask?âÂ
âI dunno it's just what Walt said about that Amnesia book, he had a weird look in his eyes as if he knew more than he was letting onâ you admit shrugging your shoulders.
âHe was just trying to get a rise out of you, make you feel uncomfortable like the ass he is,â Ransom says putting his hand on your knee.
âYou could say that againâ you scoff shaking your head.
Ransom gives you a lopsided smile before standing up from the bed âcâmon, let's go eatâ he says offering you his hand.
You smile slipping your hand into his and letting him help you up. He smiles back at you warmly and you feel your heart skip a beat at the sight. It was like your heart had finally caught up, acting without the need for memories.
âWaitâ you speak up getting Ransom to fully face you.
âEverything okay?â He asked ss you dropped his hand and took a step forward.
âYeah, I just-â you mutter as you reach up to cup his cheek.
He blinks in surprise as you reach up and hesitantly press your lips to his âare you sure?â He whispered.
âYes,â you whisper, barely audible.
A grin grows on Ransom's face as he pulled you closer and finally kisses you back. You felt every emotion he had been holding back translating through the kiss and suddenly taking things slowly didnât make any sense. You knew Ransom, you trusted him, and while you couldnât say you loved him right here at this moment you knew that you loved him before the accident and that was enough.
âWhereâs the ring?â You ask once he pulled away.
âWhat? Really? Are you sure?â He muttered in disbelief.
âYeah⊠yeah I am, I trust you, Ransom, holding back isnât helping us, Iâm not saying we can pick up where we left off but we can unpause,â you tell him, hands resting on his chest.
âUnpauseâ Ransom repeats with a smile âI like thatâ

Dividers by @firefly-graphicsâ
The week leading up to your wedding had been stressful, to say the least. Everything seemed to run at a million miles per hour and you were only just keeping your head above water. You wanted to just call the whole thing off so you could get a chance to breathe but you knew you couldnât. You had to go through with this, for Harlan, for Ransom.Â
The stress was clearly getting to Ransom too, he was becoming more erratic, and he was always pacing and muttering under his breath. His temper had been much shorter too, sometimes lashing out. Heâd always make sure to make up for it though, showering you with love and affection.Â
You always forgave him, even if you didn't really want to. He was stressed, you were stressed, it was only natural that you would argue. You had learnt not to bring certain things up though, like your memory.Â
You had questioned him about who Andy was, you assumed it was someone you knew before youâd met Ransom. But Ransom explains how it was actually a nickname for him. You had gotten drunk one night and called him Randy, and it stuck, your friends even called him it and you must have just misheard it as Andy in your dream.Â
You believed it, because it kinda made sense. Your friend in the memory had clearly been teasing Ransom so calling him by a nickname would fit. Although you had noticed Ransomâs behaviour had changed from that point onwards, you just put it down to his stress and worry over Harlan.Â
Tomorrow was your wedding day, so today you were going over every last detail making sure everything was in place.Â
âKitten Iâm just heading out to pick something up,â Ransom says walking into the living room, shrugging on his long camel coat.Â
âOh okay, hey um I was thinking of maybe going and visiting Harlan, see how heâs doing, I can call an uber or something,â you say looking up at him.Â
âNoâ Ransom states catching you off guard.Â
âW-what? Why?â you ask shaking your head in confusion.Â
Ransom lets out a small sigh, his face softening slightly âhe doesn't have a lot of energy at the moment, we donât want to tire him out so he canât make it to the wedding tomorrowâ he explains.Â
âOh right, yes okay that makes senseâ you mutter glancing down in disappointment.Â
âIâm sorry kitten, but weâll see him tomorrow,â Ransom says gently, stepping closer to put his hand on your shoulder.Â
âI know, I hope he feels better soon, Iâd hate to lose himâ you sigh looking up at him.Â
âMe too, I better go otherwise Iâll be late, see you later kittenâ Ransom smiles leaning down to press a kiss to your lips, lingering slightly before pulling away, his hands moving to his coat pockets.Â
âSee you laterâ you smile watching as he goes.Â
Once he was gone you slumped back on the couch, letting out a long sigh as you stared up at the ceiling. The silence of the house felt even more deafening, your brain instantly running a million miles per hour, so fast you couldn't even try to work out what it was thinking. Rubbing your forehead you look back down your eyes focusing on the TV and the unit it was on, spotting the TV remote hidden at the very back.Â
âSo thatâs where itâs keptâ you mutter standing up from your spot on the couch.Â
Reaching into the unit you grab the TV remote and turn it on, finding a sitcom that you could stick on in the background.Â
For the next couple of hours, you worked through all the wedding details, making sure everything was set. Thankfully it didn't take as long as you thought meaning you could relax. You knew Ransom said not to visit Harlan, but he didn't say you couldnât call Marta and find out how he was doing.
You reach out to where you left your phone and frown when it wasn't where it should be âthatâs weird, whereâd it goâ you mutter.Â
You start lifting up all the different cushions and blankets looking for it. You even looked through the large stack of paper that was on the coffee table. When you still couldn't find it you stood up and started searching the couch properly, maybe it had slipped down the side.Â
You were standing behind the couch checking underneath the couch when you heard the TV play the news bulletin noise. You paid little attention to it as the news anchors started reading out the news.Â
âNow to our main story, it has been close to 4 months since the disappearance of Y/N Y/L/N, today the police held another press conference with her friends and family appealing for more information from the publicâ the news anchor announces catching your attention.Â
Standing up from behind the couch you start watching the TV, first, they show interviews with police and recount the story of the womanâs disappearance. Itâs when they cut to the press conference that your breath catches because you recognise everyone.Â
You could see the man you had seen in your dream the one with short fluffy hair. You saw your parents, the people Ransom had told you had died years ago.Â
You felt a sharp stabbing sensation in your head making you wince, this didn't make sense. These people couldn't be who you thought they were. They had to just be people who looked like Ransom, and your parents.Â
âIs there anything youâd like to say to Y/N if sheâs out there?â one of the press called out.Â
The man you thought was Ransom nodded âyesâ he mutters âY/N, sweetheart, I donât know if youâll ever see this but if you do please reach out, just to let us know youâre safe, and if thereâs someone out there who knows where she is, or know what happened please help usâ the man says his voice breaking as he looks down.Â
You felt your heart shatter as you watched him, sniffling back the tears you didn't even know were falling. He was completely broken, his skin pale, with dark circles under his eyes.Â
The news piece finishes with a phone number and a picture of the woman missing.
And it was you.Â
The stabbing sensation in your mind increased tenfold making you cry out in pain, a bright light exploding behind your eyes, your ears ringing. Suddenly it all went black for a second before memories starts playing out in your mind. This time they were all in order, you could hear and see everything. The last thing you saw was you leaving the house, kissing the man from the conference goodbye and getting in the car.Â
It then all went quiet.Â
You slowly opened your eyes hoping your surroundings had changed, but they hadnât, you were still in Ransomâs house. You had most if not all of your memories back, and Ransom wasnât your fiance, he was practically a stranger and had been lying to you all this time. Looking down at your left hand you recoiled when saw the ring on your finger, you quickly pulled it off and threw it across the room.Â
You felt like you were about to be sick, your chest heaving as you began to pace back and forth. You needed to get out of here, now. You needed to get to the police and find help. You had to go before Ransom got home.Â
You dash out of the living room and had just gotten to the bottom of the stairs when you heard the front door open, making you freeze. You look over your shoulder to see Ransom walking back into the house, he paused when he spotted you on the stairs, his gaze falling on your tear-stained cheeks and fearful eyes.Â
He let out a long and annoyed sigh his shoulders dropping âyou remember donât you?â he asks.Â
You couldn't find your voice, you knew you should just say no. Pretend you didn't remember anything and slip out in the middle of the night, but you knew he wouldnât believe you. So you slowly nodded your head.Â
He let out a frustrated growl kicking the wall in anger making you flinch âyou couldn't just wait a couple of days could you!â he growled.Â
âPlease let me leaveâ you whisper your voice shaking in fear.Â
âNo, youâre mine nowâ Ransom barked as he lunged forward to grab you.Â
You managed to duck out of the way underneath his arm. He was blocking the front door so you made a dash to the kitchen hoping to escape through the backdoor. You had only just gotten halfway across the kitchen when Ransom caught up with you, grabbing your hair and wrenching you backwards making you scream out in pain.Â
âYou are going nowhere, youâre life is better here, better with me!â Ransom snarled in your ear and he pulled you back towards him.Â
âNo, please, please let me goâ you cry out wincing in pain.
âNeverâ he spat.Â
He began pulling you back out of the kitchen by your hair making you scream in pain, blindly reaching out to grab at anything that you could use. You manage to knock over the knife block, your fingers wrapping around the handle of a knife. You twist in his hold, blindly swinging the knife hoping to catch him and force him to drop you.Â
He however catches your wrist with his free hand. He wraps his arm around you pulling you into his chest, his grip tightening around your wrist to the point it was painful.Â
âDrop itâ Ransom growls as you struggle against him, legs kicking out, âI said drop itâ he yells in your ear, using his strength against you to pull the arm which held the knife down, the blade slicing across your thigh just above the knee.Â
You scream out in pain your hand dropping the knife, the blade clattering to the floor.Â
You tried to fight through the pain as Ransom dragged you through the house kicking and screaming. Your voice was hoarse by the time he got up the stairs and threw you into a small dark closet.Â
âYouâll realise soon enough that Iâm the one for youâ he spat as he threw you to the floor âand until you do youâll stay right hereâÂ
âPlease Ransom- donât do thisâ you weep from your crumpled state on the floor.Â
He doesn't answer, instead, he just slams the door leaving you in complete darkness. You curl up into a ball, all your muscles aching as you wept. You gave yourself a few moments to cry before deciding you couldnât just give in, if you stayed any longer you had no idea what else Ransom could do to you. You had to get out, you had to survive.Â
Pushing yourself up to your feet you hobbled over to the door hoping for whatever reason Ransom had left it unlocked. You weren't so lucky. The next thing you did was start searching the closet, hoping to find something you could use as a weapon, anything you could use to fight your way out whenever Ransom returned. But there was nothing except clothes and accessories.Â
You were about to give up when you heard the sound of birds tweeting outside. Looking up to where the noise was coming from you spot a small beam of light streaming through between the coats. Hobbling your way over you start pulling the coats from the rack and discover a small window. There was no handle to open it but if you broke it, you could probably just about squeeze through.Â
You instantly start searching for something you could use to break it, the best thing is a pair of Ransomâs dress shoes that had a rock-hard heel. You start slamming it against the window, using as much strength as you could without being too loud.Â
You were about to give up when finally a crack showed, with renewed energy you slammed the heel of the shoe into the window harder. Finally, it broke and in desperation you broke away the rest of the glass with your hands, wincing when the glass cut scratched and cut your skin.Â
Grabbing hold of the window you begin the pull yourself up, your muscle shaking and crying out as you did so. Once you were halfway through you could see the flat roof of the garage below meaning you weren't going to have too far of a fall. With one final push, you fell out of the window, you tried to break your fall by putting your hands out but you still fell with a heavy thud.Â
You wince in pain as you push yourself up, you keep yourself low to avoid being spotted as you survey the roof trying to find a good place to climb down. You finally settle on one corner where there was a bush underneath, it would be a straight drop but at least the bush would break your fall.Â
Taking a deep breath you prepare yourself and start climbing down, falling the short distance into the bush below. Moving as quietly as you could you start making your escape. You didn't have Ransomâs car keys so you had to make a run for it and hope you could catch a ride or make it to a police station.Â
You had only just gotten halfway across the driveway when you heard Ransom yell in anger inside the house. He must have found you had escaped, and now you only had minutes at most until he found you. So you made a run for it.Â
Ignoring how your limbs screamed in pain you took off down the long driveway towards the main road. Once you finally reached the road you nearly broke down at how quiet it was, there wasn't a car in sight.Â
You start looking around for a hiding spot but then you heard the sound of an engine. You panic thinking it was Ransom in his beamer coming to get you but then you spot a van approaching from down the road.Â
You start waving to get its attention but it didn't seem the be slowing so in desperation you step out into the road, right into its path. The van only just breaks in time your hands landing on its hood as it finally stopped.Â
The man behind the wheel looked back at you in shock as you held your hands out and started moving to the passenger door âhelp me please help meâ you beg as you open the door.Â
The man who looked like he was in his mid to late twenties nodded slowly, his blue eyes as wide as saucers as he looked at you.Â
âThank you,â you say close to tears as you climb into the van ânow drive please,â you say as you close the door.Â
The man nods still in a state of shock but does as you say and pulls away. Slumping back in your seat you take a deep and shaky breath, you did it, you were free.Â
âWhere-â the man starts before clearing his throat âwe should get you to a hospital,â he says gripping the steering wheel tightly as he glances over at you, his eyes darting to the large gash on your leg.Â
âNo, no hospitals, I canât trust themâ you state shaking your head, they had been the ones who let you go home with Ransom, they had been in on whatever his plan was.Â
âIâm sorry but youâre currently bleeding a lot and you look like shit, Mass Gen isn't too far,â the guy says shaking his head.Â
âNo Mass Gen is where I was, they were in on it, I need to go to the police, specifically this police station,â you say grabbing a scrap of paper from the dash and a pen, quickly writing an address, looking over at the man to show him.Â
The man looks back over at you in confusion but then you see his expression change to one of shock and realisation âHOLY SHIT YOUâRE THE MISSING CHICK!â he exclaims.Â
Your lips start to quiver and you have to bite your lower lip to stop yourself from crying âyes, I am, and the man who took me is after me nowâ you confirm quietly.Â
âShit, fuck, okay police it is thenâ The man nods putting his foot on the gas, the van speeding up.Â
âThank you,â you say youâre voice shaking.Â
âWe need to do something about your leg though, that station is a good drive away and youâre losing a lot of blood,â the man says nodding to your leg.Â
âWe canât stop, if he sees us heâll take me back,â you say shaking your head at the idea.Â
âWe wonât just- just hold the wheel for me a second,â the man says nodding to the wheel, your eyes widen in surprise but you do as he says and reach out to grab the wheel.Â
You keep the van steady as he stretches back and grabs something from the back of the van, he then tossed it at you before sitting back down and taking the wheel.Â
âIt's not a proper tourniquet but itâll work for now,â he says nodding to the guitar strap he put in your lap âdo you know how to use it?â he asks.
âYeah-yeah- are you a doctor or something?â you ask as you slide the loop of the guitar strap up your leg and tightening it.Â
âA musician but my dadâs a cop so he made sure I and my sister knew how to do this sort of thing in case of an emergencyâ the man explains with a sigh âmy nameâs Colin by the wayâ
You give him a small smile âthank you Colinâ you say as you look over at him.Â
He gave you a small lopsided smile and then you realised you recognised him, he was the singer from the band youâd seen in the bar with your friends âwait I recognise youâ you exclaim.
Colin arches a brow as he glances over at you âyou do? But we haven't met before todayâ he says.Â
âI saw you performing in a bar, you were really good,â you tell him.Â
A wide smile breaks out on his face âreally? Well Iâm always happy to meet a fanâ he grins âand I guess itâs also a good thing because you know you can definitely trust me, and you haven't just gotten into a van with another psychoâ he chuckles.
You give him a wary look that makes him instantly back peddle âIâm sorry, now it's not the time to jokeâ he apologises.Â
âIt's okay, I trust you⊠I thinkâ you say with a forced smile making Colin chuckle.
âIâll take thatâ he smirks ânow câmon then let's get you homeâ
Thankfully you soon arrived outside of the Police station, Colin running around to help you out of the van and into the police station.Â
âWe need help and a medic here please!â he shouted as he helped you limp into the police station.Â
The two police officers behind the desk freeze in shock when they see you, their eyes widening in shock at the state you were in and in recognition when they realised who you were. The both of them rush to come to help you, one of them grabbing a first aid kit on their way.Â
They hurried you and Colin into a room, getting you to sit down while they worked on your injuries. As they worked you looked over at Colin sending him a silent plea not to leave you, thankfully he understood and stood by your side, even going as far as to hold your hand the entire time. Something that would have made you cry in relief if you had any tears left to cry.Â
âThis cut is going to need stitches and I think you might have broken your wrist,â the police officer says as she bandages you up âyou should have gone straight to a hospitalâÂ
âI tried but she refusedâ Colin explains glancing over at me.Â
âMass Gen is where he took me from, they let him take meâ you explain stuttering slightly over your words.Â
The two police officers exchange a glance, a silent conversation passing between them before they look back at you âyou were abducted? Thatâs where youâve been the past couple of months?â the male officer asks.Â
âYes- kind of- it's complicated- he- he-â you say struggling to speak as you begin to break down once more, the adrenaline finally leaving your body.Â
âHey, hey it's okay youâre safe nowâ Colin reassures you, squeezing your hand.Â
âYou are, we promise, we wonât let anything happen to you, but we need to get you to a hospital, not Mass Gen, I promiseâ the female police officer tells you.Â
âWeâll make sure nothing happens, weâll have you under guard, but we need to know who to protect you fromâ the male officer explains.Â
âRansom, his name is Ransom Drysdale, you canât let him find me, or any of his familyâ you explain, feeling physically sick as you say his name.Â
The officers exchange another glance before nodding âokay we can do that, now let's get you to the hospitalâ the female officer tells you.Â
âWait! No stop I need him first, I need to see himâ you say shaking your head.Â
The female officer gives you a sympathetic look, knowing who you meant without you even saying his name.Â
âWeâll call him and let him know, weâll get him to meet you at the hospital because we need to go now,â she tells you, firm and gentle.Â
âThank you, thank youâ you mutter shaking your head in relief.Â
The next hour or so was a complete blur full of doctors, nurses and police officers. It was close to overwhelming, every time I new person entered the room I froze in fear, terrified that this time it would be Ransom. Even though you knew there was a police officer standing guard outside your room the fear never left you.Â
Your gash had been stitched up and bandaged, your wrist put in a cast, and all the bruises and cuts you had from your struggle to get away had been documented for evidence. You only got a chance to breathe when the doctors finally left you alone to rest.Â
You were completely exhausted and all you wanted to do was sleep, but you didn't dare shut your eyes. You needed to stay awake and alert for now. So you just lay back staring up at the ceiling, your mind replaying all the memories back to you.Â
âWhere is she!â you heard someone demand outside your room.Â
You instantly sat up in your bed, eyes trained on the door because you recognised the voice. You waited in anticipation, your chest heaving as seconds ticked by. Finally, after an agonising wait, the door to your room opened and you saw him.Â
The two of you stared at each other, nobody able to say a single word as you took each other in. He looked tired, his blue eyes scanning over your face and down to all your injuries. He ran a hand down his face shaking his head as he looked at you. You wanted to move but you were completely frozen in place.Â
âAndyâ you finally manage, your voice barely above a whisper.Â
Andy nods his head, not even bothering to hold back his tears âhoneyâ he whispered.Â
He surged forward, breaking the both of you from your frozen spell. He wrapped his arms around you tightly, burying his head in the crook of your neck. You clung onto him tightly the both of you breaking down in each otherâs arms.Â
âFuck honey Iâm so happy to see you, I canât believe youâre hereâ Andy muttered shaking his head as he pulled back and cupped your cheeks.Â
âIâm sorry, Iâm so sorryâ you stutter shaking your head in shame, your fingers wrapping around his wrists.Â
âNo, no, stop, stop thatâ Andy whispers as he presses a gentle kiss to your forehead âyou have nothing to apologise for,â he says his warm gentle blue eyes finding yours âyouâre safe now and thatâs all that matters, nothing else, and weâll work this all out, weâll make him pay for whatever he did to youâÂ
Tears fall down your face, Andy promptly wiping them away with his thumbs âIâm so happy to see youâ you whisper shaking your head.Â
A small smile breaks out on Andyâs face âme too, so, so muchâ he smiles leaning down to kiss you.Â
It was hesitant, to begin with, but you eagerly responded, allowing Andy to kiss you more passionately. Every feeling the both of you had was spoken in that kiss. It just felt so right, it was perfect. You hadnât realised until this moment why kissing Ransom always felt so odd and wrong, it was because your body knew it wasn't Andy. Your body was made for Andy and no one else.Â
âWhere- where is everyone else?â you ask once you finally broke the kiss.Â
âCarrie will be here tomorrow, Frank and Mary will visit as soon as they canâ your heart swelling at the mention of your friends âyour parents are making their way over now, theyâll be here in an hour or so,â Andy tells you, his thumbs gently running over your cheeks.Â
âAnd theyâre all okay? He- he told me my parents were deadâ you ask nervously.Â
âTheyâre all fine, happy and healthy, theyâre so happy youâre safeâ Andy reassures you, one hand dropping to take your hand squeezing it gently.Â
âOh thank godâ you choke out relief taking over you, Andy instantly wrapped his arms around you, kissing the top of your head as he held you.Â
âHi, Iâm sorry to interrupt the reunion but I thought I better introduce myself,â a man says stepping into your room âIâm Lieutenant Elliott, Iâll be the head detective on your caseâ
âHave you got him yet? The man who abducted her?â Andy demands standing up and turning to face the detective, his hand resting on your shoulder.Â
âYes, we arrested him a few minutes agoâ Elliott nods âweâll be questioning him later tonight but we need to know what happened to you before we can do soâ he explains nodding to you.Â
You glance up at Andy swallowing nervously âyeah⊠sureâ you manage to say looking back over at the detective.Â
âTake your time honey, donât rush it if youâre not readyâ Andy reassures you.Â
âNo, Iâm readyâŠâ you say looking back up at him âit just wonât be easy for you to hearâ
Andy takes a deep breath nodding his head before forcing a smile âwhatever happened Iâll be right here the entire timeâ he reassures you.Â
You nod your head slightly before looking over at the detective âIâm readyâÂ
Over the next half an hour you recalled everything that happened, from the moment you woke up in the hospital, your time with Ransom, and what happened when you finally got your memories back.Â
By the time you were finished, you had officially run out of tears. The detective muttered something to you as he left but you didn't hear it, you were focused solely on Andy. He had gone silent and sat in his chair next to you in bed. You could see he was still processing what you had just recounted, every dirty detail.Â
âPlease donât hate meâ you choke out shaking your head.
âNoâ Andy mutters his voice cracking as he shook his head âno I donât hate you, I could never hate you,â he tells you reaching out to take your hand.Â
âIf Iâd known Iâd never have gone through with it, let him touch me or- or-â you say struggling to find the words.Â
âI know, I know honey I knowâ Andy sighs lifting your hand to his lips âit's okay, weâll get through this, weâll make him payâ he promises.Â
âSo weâre good?â you ask still uncertain.Â
âYeah weâre good, weâll always be goodâ Andy promises, standing up so he could lean over and kiss you âyouâre home nowâ
âIâm homeâ you repeat âIâm homeâ

Everything hurt. Your head was pounding, and your limbs felt like lead. You tried to move but you couldnât, you tried to open your eyes but you couldnât keep them open for long enough. Only catching glimpses of people standing over you and blue flashing lights.Â
âMiss? Miss, can you hear me?â You heard someone say above you.
You try to look at where the voice was coming from.
âStay still, everything is going to be okay, can you tell me your name?â The voice says again.
You try to speak but your voice comes out hoarse. You gulp trying to clear your throat before trying to speak again.
âIt's⊠my nameâsâŠ.â You say before darkness consumes you once more.
When you finally woke back up there was a dull ache all over your body. There was a ringing in your ears and your throat felt like sandpaper.Â
As you slowly became more aware of your surroundings you could hear a faint beeping and the feeling of someone holding your hand. Eventually, you managed to open your eyes, squinting as your eyes adjusted.Â
âSweetheart?â You heard a man say to your left.
Looking over you saw a man you didnât instantly recognise. He was a charming-looking man, his brown hair neatly styled back, icy blue eyes searching your face. A hopeful expression on his face as he squeezed your hand.
âYou gave me such a fright kitten, please donât do that again,â he says shaking his head as he kissed your knuckles.
âWho- who are you?â You croak coughing slightly.
The man sighs in disappointment, his shoulders dropping as he bows his head. The heartbreak was evident on his face and all you could wonder was what youâd done.
âThey warned me this might happen, but it's okay weâll get through this together I promise,â he says his eyes finding yours as he squeezed your hand again.
âWhat- I-â you say completely confused.
âWhat do you remember?â The man asks sitting forward.
You look around as you try to recall any memory at all. But you couldnât. You donât know what happened to you. You couldnât remember where you were from. You couldnât even remember your own name.
âNothing,â you say fearful tears collecting in the corner of your eyes.
âHey, hey, hey itâs okay Iâll help you remember I promise,â the man says soothingly.
âMy name is Ransom, Ransom Drysdale Iâm your fiance,â Ransom says introducing himself.
âWeâre engaged?â You ask shocked.
âYeah, I know this is a lot to take in but weâll take this as slow as you need,â Ransom tells you reassuringly.
âWhatâs my name?â You ask nervously as you see Ransom look back at you sadly.
âItâs Dorothyâ Ransom tells you gently his thumb gently brushing over your skin
âDorothy,â you say the name feeling foreign on your tongue.
âYeah, youâve always hated it, said it was an old person's name,â Ransom says with a weak chuckle.
You watch him swallow nervously shifting in his seat as if waiting for some form of response. But you had nothing, a deep guilty feeling stirring inside you when you saw his sad eyes. So you lied.
âYeah that sounds about rightâ you mutter glancing down at his hand.
Ransom gives you a small smile âis there anything else you want to know?â Ransom asks you.
âUm- how- how did I get here? What happened?â You ask glancing around at the hospital room.
âIt's my faultâ Ransom sighs making you look over at him concerned.
âWe got into an argument and you stormed out and drove away, I donât know what happened but you spun off the road and crashed. You left everything at home I only found out you were here when I heard about it on the newsâ Ransom says his voice catching as he told you what happened.
âIt's not your fault,â you say feeling the need to comfort him even though he felt like a stranger.
âIt is, the argument was my fault and if it hadnât happened you wouldnât have left and you wouldnât be here right now, unable to remember a thing,â Ransom says his voice breaking as he looks down to hide his tears.
âHey, hey it's okay, Iâm alive which is the most important thing, and Iâll remember stuff eventually and if I donât then Iâll just make new memories,â you say comforting him.
He lets out a watery chuckle as he looks back up at you âyouâre the one in the hospital bed, I should be comforting you not the other way aroundâ Ransom says.
âThis canât be easy on you thoughâ you point out shrugging your shoulders as much as you can.
âNo, but weâll get through this, and itâll make us stronger,â Ransom says putting on a brave face.
âStrongerâ you agree nodding your head gently.Â
âIâll go get a doctor and see if I can get you home soonerâ Ransom smiles standing up.
He kisses the top of your head before heading out of the hospital room. Once he was gone your smile fades as you try to make sense of everything. Ransom seemed like a good guy, there was something about him that felt familiar. But there was a feeling in your gut that told you something wasnât right. You didnât have the memories to know what though.
The more you thought about it the worse your headache got. It felt like it was overheating as it tried to recall memories but still nothing. You just had to trust Ransom, he seemed trustworthy.
âHey itâs good to see you awake, how are you feeling?â The doctor says grabbing your attention as he walked in.
âUm sore, disorientedâ you mutter rubbing your forehead.
Ransom moves to sit down beside you once more, his hand reaching out to take your spare one. He squeezes your hand gently, a sympathetic smile on his face when you glanced over.
âThatâs pretty common for people with cases like yoursâ the doctor nods glancing over at Ransom.
âWith amnesia?â You say before shaking your head âI thought that only happened in moviesâ you comment.
âUnfortunately not, it's rare but still happensâ the doctor confirms with a sigh as he looks down at your chart âbut all things considered Iâd say youâve been pretty lucky, youâve sustained minimal injuries, to the point that Iâm happy to discharge you todayâÂ
You look back at the Doctor shocked, this didnât feel right, youâd only just woken up they couldnât be sending you home already. You look over at Ransom worriedly but he gives your a reassuring smile.
âDonât worry Iâve already organised a private nurse to help make sure youâre okayâ Ransom tells you gently.
âBut- but the cost,â you say shaking your head.
âDonât worry about that kitten, just focus on getting betterâ Ransom says cutting you off.
You nod, swallowing nervously âand- and I will get better?â You ask looking over to the doctor.
You watch as he glances over at Ransom before looking back at you âwe hope so, but donât try and force it, just take it steady, slowly try and prompt memoriesâ the doctor tells you.
âO-okay I willâ you nod gently.
âGood to hear, Iâll just grab you some forms and Iâll help you leaveâ the doctor nods before heading out of the room.
Once he was gone you let out a shaky breath as you look up at the ceiling, your vision blurry as everything you just learned sinks in. The fear of not knowing anything and not knowing if youâd ever remember anything ever again overwhelmed you.
âHey, hey, hey,â Ransom says squeezing your hand.
You bite your lower lip as you look over at him.
âI know it's scary but weâll get through this, I promiseâ Ransom swears to you.
You take another deep breath as you try to control your breathing. You scanned Ransomâs face trying to trigger some sort of memory, but all you got was some sense of familiarity. Going on that alone, you decided to trust him.
âOkayâ you mutter.

Dividers by @firefly-graphicsâ
It had been a couple of weeks since youâd met Ransomâs family and decided he was right, they were all assholes, with the exception of Harlan and Marta of course. It had also been a couple of weeks since you decided to put your ring on and unpause your relationship with Ransom.Â
Things were going slowly still, you slept in the same bed, but hadnât slept together yet. But neither of you no longer held yourself back when seeking affection or giving it. Something you saw Ransom was definitely enjoying, appearing much more relaxed than heâd been in the first few weeks.
Ransom had also started going out to work more, working alongside Harlan on his next book. Ransom had told you that Harlan wanted him to take over once he was gone, but he didnât feel like he could. That was until you reassured him that Harlan wouldnât have suggested it if he didnât think Ransom could do it.
With Ransom being out more, you were left to your own devices at home. Filling your days with reading books, you had tried to watch TV but you could never find the remote, you didnât mind though, youâd rather curl up with a good book anyway. You had decided to try and work your way through all of Harlanâs books, with the exception of the one Walt told you about, which hit a bit too close to home at the moment.
All day you had been trying to read but youâd been struggling. Your mind seemingly didnât want to focus on anything at all, a dull throb behind your eyes had been constant despite the copious amounts of water you drank and the painkillers youâd taken. Curled up on the couch you were fighting to keep your eyes open until you gave in and fell asleep.
The heat you felt was intense, the only saving grace being the strong breeze that stopped your clothes from sticking to your skin in the humid air. Fanning yourself you couldnât believe that you were almost missing the Massachusetts chill. You loved the heat, but this was almost unbearable, you had no idea how people lived here permanently.
Holding your hand up to shield your eyes from the bright sun, you blinked a couple of times as your eyes adjusted. As they did so you saw a familiar scene forming, the iconic Disney castle in the distance.Â
Once you realised you were in Disneyworld your senses exploded. All you could hear was the squeal of children as they spotted their favourite character, the sound of laughter and screams from the distance rides. The air was thick with the sweet scent of all the treats on offer and you instantly craved a churro.Â
You went to step towards the castle when you felt a small hand grab your hand, a small girl bouncing in front of you with a wide smile. You blinked with surprise as this girl with short messy blonde and wavy hair tugged on your hand excitedly.
She was talking to you but you couldnât hear what she was saying, her voice muffled compared to every other sound you could hear. The girl then waved to someone behind you, glancing over your shoulder you see a figure a few feet away. He appeared fuzzy to you but your mind told you it must be Ransom.
You went to look back at the girl but mid-movement everything went black.
You woke with a start, the book you had been reading falling to the floor with a loud thud. You moved to sit up but had to stop when you felt a sharp pain at your temples making you wince. Screwing your eyes shut you took a few deep breaths as you waited for the pain to subside.
Eventually, it started to go away, turning back into a dull throb like it had been before, allowing you to think clearly once more. You let out a long sigh as you replayed what you just saw in your dream. You knew without a doubt it had been a memory breaking to the surface but it just didnât make sense.
You had no idea who that little girl was, but she clearly knew you. Despite your confusion, you could feel a strong sense of protectiveness and love toward this girl. Meaning you must know her well, she wasnât someone youâd just met.Â
The more you thought about your dream the less it made sense. Like why you couldnât see Ransom clearly, it made sense to you that the man youâd seen would be Ransom. They had his height, figure and hair colour, even the blue eyes. The only difference was that his hair was a little shorter and he had stubble. He also wore a bright yellow Hawaiian shirt that you didnât think Ransom would ever wear.
Before you were able to get too lost in your thoughts you hear someone knocking on the front door. Pushing yourself up from the couch you stumbled slightly as your headache returned for a second. Slowly walking over you open the door to find Marta standing on the other side.
âMarta?â You ask frowning.
âHi I hope you donât mind me dropping around without warning, Harlan suggested you might want company while he and Ransom work,â Marta says pulling at the sleeves of her cardigan.
âOh uh yeah sure that sounds nice, come inâ you nod regretting the motion almost instantly.
âYou okay? I can leave if you want or help if itâs something medical?â Marta asks looking at you in concern as she steps inside.
âNo Iâm fine, the company is what I need, I just have a headache that wonât budge,â you say waving it off as you walk through the house towards the kitchen âcan I get you a drink?âÂ
âJust a water thank you,â Marta says as she follows behind you âhave you taken anything for your headache? Ibuprofen?âÂ
âUh yeah, keeping myself well dosed, and drinking loads and I even had a nap, I guess itâs just a side effect from⊠you knowâ you say gesturing to your head as you pour her a glass of water.
âYou can take some Paracetamol too if you want, use it to piggyback the ibuprofen, keep the levels up,â Marta says as she riffles through her bag and pulls out some tablets âI do also have access to morphine but that might be a bit excessiveâÂ
You let out a small chuckle as you take the pills from her âyeah let's leave the fun stuff for laterâ you wink.
âSo how have you been?â Marta asks as you walk back over to the couch.
You let out a long sigh as you sat back down on the couch âmore or less the same, Iâm seeing flashes of memories still butâŠâ you sigh thinking back to the dream you just had âthey just donât make sense, it's like trying to work out what the picture is of a jigsaw but you only have a few piecesâ
Marta hums nodding her head âyeah I can see how difficult that must be, but how about in general? Are you keeping active? Busy?â She asks
âAs much as I can, Iâm reading a lot which is nice,â you say gesturing to the book youâd been reading âI guess an upside of amnesia is you get to read everything for the first time againâ
Marta chuckles nodding her head âyes there are many films I wish I could see for the first time againâÂ
âExactly, anyway enough about me, tell me more about yourselfâ you smile getting more comfortable on the couch.
You and Martha talked for hours and you hadnât realised how much time had actually passed. You felt so grateful to have someone to talk to about everything, especially the things you didnât feel comfortable sharing with Ransom because you knew it would just make him sad.
âHas your doctor suggested ways to help improve your memory?â Marta asked after you expressed your frustrations.
âA few but Iâm really not sure if theyâre workingâ you sigh shaking your head.
âIt may seem out there but I read about hypnotherapy as a way to regain memories, have you thought about that?â Marta offers.
âOh no, I havenât heard of that, what is it?â You question.
âWell the theory is that memories arenât ever lost, it's just the brain forgets how to find its way there, and this therapy helps find those routes againâ Marta explains with a small shrug of her shoulders.
âOh wow yeah, that-â you start before you get interrupted by the sound of Ransom arriving home.
He swooped through the house, pausing when he saw Marta sitting on the couch. A scowl instantly appeared on his face.
âWhat are you doing here?â He demands.
âHarlan said I should give Dory some company while youâre out,â Marta says shuffling uncomfortably under Ransom's gaze.
âSheâs been great company, she was just telling me about a therapy that can help me regain my memoriesâ you explain, smiling up at him.
âWe donât need any bullshit therapies, weâve been given a recovery plan by our doctor, a specialist!â Ransom states âwe donât need the advice of a geriatric caretakerâ he growls.
âRansom sheâs just trying to helpâ you sigh trying to calm him down, not understanding why he was so mad.
âThe doctor said not to push it, we- youâve been through so much already I donât want it to get worse because we pushed it too farâ Ransom argues, his voice softening slightly when his eyes met yours.
âOkay, okay I understand,â you say gently âweâll put a pin in it and revisit a few months to a year later when everything else failsâÂ
Ransom doesnât say anything but you see his shoulders begin to relax.
âI should get going,â Marta says clearing her throat as she stood up.
Ransom just grunts in response moving towards the kitchen.
âSorry about him, heâs struggling with it more than heâs letting on,â you tell her quietly as you walk her to the door âthank you for coming overâÂ
âItâs nothing, I hope you regain more memories soonâ Marta smiles taking a step out the door.
âMe tooâ you chuckle gently before waving goodbye and closing the door.
You found Ransom still in the kitchen his hands braced on the island, a frown on his face as he stared down at the marble counter. You stand opposite him your arms crossed over your chest.
âThat was very rude of you, sheâs only trying to helpâ you chastise.
âShe was sticking her nose in our businessâ Ransom huffs.
âSheâs concerned for us! Sheâs trying to be supportive and considering the rest of your family are asses we donât really have anyone else!â You shout.
Ransom lets out a long sigh finally lifting his gaze so it met yours âyouâre rightâ he quietly concedes âIâm sorryâ
âIâm not the person you should be apologising toâ you point out.
âI know and Iâll apologise the next time I see her, I just⊠weâre in a good place despite everything⊠and I donât want to lose thatâ he admits with a small shake of his head.
You sigh moving around the island to put your hand on his arm âI know, I knowâ you tell him âI just wish I could make sense of everything, its all so confusing at the moment and I just want something to make senseâ
Ransom sighs wrapping his arms around you, pulling you into his embrace âI know, I wish I could fix it all, give you all your memories backâÂ
âI know you would, but you canât so we just have to muddle through and if that means trying some therapies then we try them or at least consider them,â you say resting your hands on his chest.
âOkay, look let me make it up to you, I can probably get us a dinner reservation for tonight if you want?â Ransom offers.
A smile grows on your face âlike an actual date?â You ask excitedly.
âYeah like an actual dateâ Ransom chuckles nodding his head âso what do you say?âÂ
âSounds amazingâ you grin reaching up to kiss him.
You felt like a celebrity. Ransom had taken you to the most extravagant restaurant in Boston, he had really pulled out all the stops. You didnât even need to go through the main entrance, you were taken round the back and into a small private dining room.Â
Ransom looked as handsome as ever, with a white crisp shirt paired with navy slacks that made his ass look impeccable. You were glad heâd found you the deep blue silk slip dress to wear because your original outfit pick would not have sufficed.Â
âThis is amazing Ransomâ you mutter in amazement, glancing around the room.
Ransom smiles reaching out across the table, his hand resting over yours, fingers tracing your engagement ring âwell after everything youâve been through⊠I thought you deserved a treatââ
You chuckle gently, your gaze dipping slightly before meeting his again âwell this is certainly a treat, although I have to say I would have been happy with just a cosy movie nightâ
Ransom lets out a huff of a laugh âoh donât you go getting all modest on me, I like treating you, I want to treat youâÂ
You arch a brow slightly âyou make it sound like weâve had this argument beforeâ you say.
âYouâre not wrong, it took you a little while to get used to this sort of life,â Ransom says gesturing around the room âyou were sensible with your money, and there was always a sense of guilt whenever I brought you something or took you somewhere like thisâÂ
âAnd how did we overcome that?â You ask reaching for your wine glass and taking a sip.
âCompromise mostly, I wouldnât do it too often, and you got used to it, knowing that I wasnât doing it because I felt like it, but because I wanted toâ Ransom explains with a shrug.
âSo your love language is giftingâ you summarise making him laugh.
âAnd what is yours?â Ransom asks before quickly adding âyou know in case itâs changedâÂ
âPhysical touch,â you say without hesitation.
Ransom smirks nodding his head as he grabs his tumbler of scotch âwell I can say for certain that hasnât changedâ he winks.
You feel your face heat up, your thighs pressing together as you feel pressure building âIâm guessing you donât mean just cuddlingâ you say shifting in your seat.
âNo I mean cuddling, but not the PG-13 kindâ Ransom winks.
You bit your lip to hold back your smile, grabbing your wine glass and taking a large sip when that failed. You had noticed that ever since you and Ransom decided to go back to normal he had turned on the charm.Â
Not that you minded one bit, you had to admit you were curious what Ransom was like in bed. He seemed like he could be very domineering and would take complete control, but you had also seen the sweet and caring side of him. You were nervous though, you felt hesitant to take that step, something was holding you back.
âHey, you okay? You disappear for a moment thereâ Ransom says grabbing your attention.
âHm? Oh um yeah fineâ you mutter draining the rest of your wine.
Ransom arches a brow grabs the wine bottle and quietly pours you another healthy serving âhey no câmon now, you can tell me anything rememberâ Ransom presses.
You plaster on your most convincing smile reaching out to put your hand on his âRansom Iâm fine I promiseâ you tell.
Ransom eyes you up and down an unreadable look on his face. For a moment you worried he didnât believe you but at the last second, a small smirk grew on his face as he nodded his face.
âWell I think we should toast, to getting our lives on track,â Ransom says lifting his glass.
âTo back on trackâ you smile lifting your glass.
Ransom lightly taps his against yours watching as you took a healthy glug while he only took a tiny sip.
For the rest of the meal you laughed and chatted with Ransom, your wine glass was never empty and you werenât sure how much you had actually drunk. You had to assume it was a fair amount though because you were definitely buzzed.
Ransom had his arm around you securely as he led you out of the restaurant and back to his car. You were so buzzed that you only realised he was driving when you were halfway home.
âOh my god, you canât be driving!â You gasped looking over at him wide-eyed.
Ransom laughs glancing over at you âwhy not?â He asks
âCause weâre drunkâ you explain your words slurring together as you shook your head at him.
âI only had one drink, Iâm fine to driveâ Ransom promises smiling over at you.
âOh, okayâ you hum nodding your head as you look back out at the road ahead.
Once you got back to the house you were back in your giggly mood, stumbling slightly as you walked through the house. Ransom was holding you steady the entire way, you could tell he was finding the situation hilarious but was trying to hold back his laughter.
Finally, you reached the bedroom, where you tried to remove your heels only to promptly fall into Ransomâs arms. Your hands were resting on his chest, while he hold you so close that you could feel every inch of him.
âOh hello there little Ransomâ you giggle.
âLittle Ransom? Iâll have you know heâs definitely not littleâ Ransom smirks his hands moving to your hips tugging them towards his.
âAh well,â you say pointing up at him âIâm not sure if I can trust you on that, you know because of,â you say gesturing to your head.
Ransom chuckles reaching up to brush some hair out of your face, leaning down so his face was inches away from yours âI can show you if you wantâ he offers voice low.
You swallow biting your lip as you looked up at him through your lashes. Not quite able to bring yourself to say yes.
âCâmon kitten we both know you want to see exactly what he can doâ Ransom presses his hands running over your body.
You still struggled to find your words, your brain short-circuited when Ransom leant down and started kissing and nipping at your neck. A moan involuntarily escapes your mouth and you feel Ransom smirk against your skin.
âI think we have our answer donât we?â Ransom hums his eyes finding yours.
You hadnât even realised you had nodded your head until Ransom cupped your cheeks and kissed you deeply. You gasped in surprise when he swiftly picked you up, carried you over to the bed and dropped you onto the mattress. You didnât even get the chance to sit up before Ransom was on top of you trapping you against the mattress his lips finding yours once more.
Another moan left your lips as his large hands started playing with your breast, squeezing and massaging through the thin material of your dress. His other hand was running up and down your thigh slowly moving your dress up over your hips. You gasp when you feel his fingers brush over your clothed core.
âOh kitten I have been waiting so long for thisâ Ransom muttered as he begins pulling down your panties.Â
A shudder ran through your body, your chest heaving as you looked down to see Ransom kneeling down between your thighs. You watched as he slowly licked his lips, a look in his eyes as if heâd just found the holy grail. You gasped when he dove in, your back arching as he licked and sucked on your sensitive nub.Â
Your brain almost couldnât decide what it wanted to feel, it was unbelievably good but you had this strange feeling something was missing. It felt like you were waiting for a burning sensation that never came. Your mind and body were at war as you squirmed under Ransomâs touch, your orgasm catching you completely off guard.
âThatâs it kitten, you know youâve been missing thisâ Ransom smirks as he sits back on his ankles, hands moving to pop the buttons of his shirt and unbuckle his pants.
Your eyes widen and you swallowed the lump in your throat as you took in the sheer size of him. You didnât have a moment to think before Ransom was above you once more kissing away any doubts you had.
Your back arched and Ransom swallowed everything noise you made with a kiss as he swiftly pressed into you. Your mind went blank as you got used to the sensation of him filling you up to the point it almost hurt. It felt amazing and strange and new, but that must just have been a side effect of amnesia, everything feeling new.
You clutched onto Ransom as he thrust into you slowly before picking up the pace, moving faster and harder knocking the air out of your lungs. Your eyes began to flutter shut as you fell into some form of haze. Your mind seemingly shuts down for an unknown amount of time. You must have fallen asleep as you began to see flashes of memories, none of which made much sense.Â
All you could see was the sea, sun and the beach. The salt air whipped through your hair as you held onto the side of the boat. A pod of dolphins swimming in the bow waves generated by the boat.Â
You smiled as you took in the sun, looking over to see the small blonde-haired girl from before, glancing over your shoulder you spot who you recognised as Ransom at the wheel. You felt yourself smile as you looked over at him, your heart skipping a beat when he smiled back at you, sending you a playful wink. You responded by blowing him a kiss which made him laugh and smile warmly back at you. He was clearer than he was before, allowing you to take in more details. Ones that made less and less sense, like the grease marks on his arms and the stains on his white cotton tee. His skin was more tanned, and he seemed a bit slimmer, his hair was fluffy and messy. None of that screamed Ransom to you.
You woke with a start finding yourself curled into Ransomâs side. You glanced up to see him smirking down at you, an eyebrow arched.
âYou okay there kitten?â He asked as you rubbed your forehead, your headache from before returning.
âYeah I- I just had a weird dream,â you say still not certain if it was a dream or not âhave we ever gone to Florida?â
Ransom freezes for a split second before shifting slightly âwhy? Do you remember something?â He questions.
âIâm not sure, Iâm getting flashes and I saw you and Disneyworldâ you explain frowning slightly as you tried to put together the pieces.
A smile grows on Ransomâs face as he pulled you closer and kisses the top of your head âIâm so happy to hear thatâ he smiles.
âSo we have?â You ask looking up at him.
âYeah I took you to celebrate us being together for 6 months, youâd always wanted to go but couldnât so I wanted to treat youâ Ransom explains with a smile.
âAw thatâs sweet of you,â you say a small smile on his face.
âYeah, it was nice just you and me no one else, just the way I like itâ Ransom smirks kissing the top of your head.
You hum smiling up at him before resting your head back on his chest. Soon enough you felt Ransom fall asleep beside you. You remained awake for a little while longer, just about to doze off when you realised something.
Ransom never mentioned the little girl.

You nibbled your lip in thought, pen tapping against your chin as you stared down at your notes. At first glance it didnât make much sense, the page was filled with numbers and notes. Arrows connecting all the things you felt went together, stars next to things you felt were important.
âWhat are you doing?â Ransomâs sharp voice startled you since you thought you were alone.
You instinctively held your notebook to your chest shielding it from prying eyes. You looked over your shoulder to see Ransom standing just behind you, his face unreadable as he looked down at you from your spot on the couch.
âOh itâs nothing,â you say waving it off.
Ransom arches a brow, putting his hand on his hips âdidnât look like nothingâ he comments as he walks around to stand in front of you.
You give him a small smile shaking your head âitâs stupidâ you mutter.
âI doubt that, câmon kitten we donât have secrets do we?â Ransom says as he sits down on the couch, arm outstretched across the back, fingers brushing against your shoulder.
You sigh biting your lip slightly as you look down at your notes âwell⊠well you know iâve been doing a lot of readingâ you start holding up the book that was also in your lap.
Ransom hums nodding his head in response his eyes flickering between your face and your notebook.
âWell, I just had so many thoughts and ideas about these stories so I started jotting down notes and my thoughts about them, my favourite quotes, anything I liked about themâ you admit with a bashful smile.
You see Ransomâs shoulders relax and a smile forming on his lips âthatâs good, Iâm glad youâre finding something to keep you occupiedâÂ
âWell actuallyâŠâ you start biting your lips nervously âI was thinking this sort of thing, working in literature might be something I can do, maybe with Harlan?â You suggest.
Ransomâs smile falls once more, turning into a small frown âIâm not sure that would be a good ideaâ he states.
Your face falls, you didnât expect Ransom to shut down the idea so quickly âwhy not?â
âWell, Walt for startersâ Ransom sighs âhe would just make it hell for you, it wonât matter what Harlan thinks or doesâ he states shaking his head.
âOh, well Iâm sure I could handle him,â you say shifting in your seat.
âAnd look you donât need to work, I have enough money to look after us,â Ransom says putting his hand on your knee.
âI know but I want to work, have something to do except sit around all dayâ you sigh gesturing around.
âI know, but it's only been a couple of months since the accident, I donât want you to push yourselfâ Ransom states âIâm not saying you canât get a job ever, I just think you should just wait for nowâÂ
You let out a long sigh looking down as you mulled his words over. You could see his point and you understood his hesitation.
âBut if youâre enjoying thisâ Ransom says pointing to your notebook âkeep going, use it to keep yourself busyâÂ
âYeah, I guess soâ you sigh nodding your head.
Silence falls in the room, you glance over to see Ransom studying your face. A strange look on his face, you were about to question it when he spoke.
âI do have another idea of what you could do to keep yourself occupied,â He says.
You sit up instantly intrigued âyou do? What is it?âÂ
Ransom smiles reaching out to take your left hand, his thumb running over your engagement ring âwe get marriedâ he says simply.
You nearly choke on air in shock, blinking a couple of times trying to work out if you were dreaming or not because there was no way Ransom had seriously suggested that.Â
âWhat?â You squeaked.
âWhy donât we start planning our weddingâ Ransom repeats making your eyes widen because he was being serious.
âR-really? A-are you sure?â You ask stuttering slightly.
âYeah I mean I know we said weâd go slow considering everything, but Iâve been giving it a lot of thought and we basically live like a married couple now, the only difference would be a signed piece of paper,â Ransom says shrugging his shoulders casually.
âYeah-yeah I guess soâ you mutter scratching your forehead as you tried to process what he was saying.
âI mean this ring,â Ransom says his thumb brushing over your ring âitâs a promise weâve already made to love each other for the rest of our lives, the wedding would just make it even more officialâ
You nod gulping nervously as you looked down at your ring, the piece of jewellery feeling incredibly heavy all of a sudden. You glance back up at Ransom and see the hopeful and loving expression he wore. You instantly felt bad for your hesitancy, because you could see how desperately Ransom wanted this.
âOkayâŠâ you finally agree âokay so um when do you want to set the date for? Thatâs a good place to start right?â You mutter your lips pursed in thought.
âWellâ Ransom starts his hand moving to your arm, his fingers tracing invisible lines up and down your skin âI donât want to wait too long so why donât we set the date for a couple of months' time?âÂ
You feel the air being sucked out of your lungs again in shook âa couple of months? Isnât that too soon?â You ask âI mean how could we possibly plan everything in such a short amount of time?â You add quickly.
âDonât you worry about that, Itâs only going to be a small thing anyway, so you tell me what you want and Iâll get it all sortedâ Ransom smiles âthe Drysdale Thrombey names carry a lot of weight in this state, may as well use it to our advantageâ he adds with a smirk.
âOkay yeah sure Iâll um get looking and deciding, donât you want any input on it?â You ask frowning slightly.
âNo I trust you, this is your day, the only thing I ask is that my family is not invitedâ Ransom smirks making you laugh.
âDeal, only Harlan and Marta are allowedâ you smile nodding your head.
âPerfect, I have a couple of things to get on with,â Ransom says pushing himself up from the couch âso Iâll leave you to your readingâ he smiles leaning down and kissing you deeply.
âOkay, Iâll let you know when dinner is readyâ you smile up at him.
âPerfect,â he says kissing you once more before heading towards the stairs.
Once he was gone you let out a long and shaky sigh. Dread settled in your stomach and you felt so nervous it made you feel physically sick. Closing your eyes you took a few deep breaths trying to centre yourself. You reminded yourself that you and Ransom were in love and had been for a while, you recalled all the amazing things heâd done for you since the accident, like how he stood up for you against his family.Â
He was right, this was the right thing to do. Nothing really would change in your day-to-day life. This feeling you had was just because you were still processing it, you would feel more excited soon enough. It was just sudden and soon this feeling of something being wrong would go.Â
âRight well I guess I better planningâ you mutter to yourself.Â
The next couple of weeks had been very busy for you. You were amazed at how quickly and easily this wedding was to plan. Youâd already found a minister, decided on flowers, what food youâd eat and a very small guest list. Youâd even booked an appointment to find your dress, and you didn't even have to leave the house. Every single vendor came to you or Ransom went to deal with securing them.Â
âI think we might have hit a snag with the venueâ you sigh one evening as you sat down to eat dinner.Â
Ransom frowns glancing up at you âwhat do you mean?â he asks reaching out for his glass of scotch.Â
âWell, theyâre all fully booked and have been for months some for yearsâ you explain as you gather some pasta onto your fork.Â
âIâm sure they could find a day for us, itâs not every day one of the Thrombey family gets marriedâ Ransom frowns shaking his head.Â
âThey canât, even with your name they couldn't budge, they did put us at the top of the cancellation list though but still,â you tell him as you finish your mouthful.Â
Ransom huffs in annoyance, shaking his head as he whispered a curse. You watched as his fist clenched on the table, his jaw ticking as he looked to the side. You could practically see the gears turning in his head.Â
âWhat if we had it at Harlanâs house?â he suggests looking back over at you.Â
âDo you think heâd be okay with that?â you ask taking a sip of water.Â
Ransomâs lips twitch upwards âof course heâll be okay with it, heâd love itâ he reassures you.Â
âAnd what about your family, what if they get word of it and try to crash the wedding,â you ask biting your lips nervously.Â
âIâd like to see them tryâ Ransoms smirks âdonât worry about it kitten Iâll get it all sorted, just let me know what you want and Iâll organise itâÂ
You feel a small smile creeping onto your lips âthank you ransomâ you say earning a smile from his in return.Â
Once dinner was eaten and the plates cleared, you and Ransom settled down on the couch. He wrapped his arm around your shoulder, pulling you into his side, your head resting on his chest as he started asking you about all the other decisions youâd made for the wedding.Â
âWhat about your dress? Care to tell me about that?â Ransom smirks, his long fingers tickling your side.Â
âNo, you know it's bad luck to see the dress before the dayâ you laugh looking up at him.Â
âI canât even get a little peak,â Ransom asks arching a brow.Â
âNope, plus I havenât even picked a dress yet, I have an appointment at the end of the week,â you tell him.Â
âOh, so will I be getting kicked out of the house that day?â Ransom asks smirking down at you.Â
âYep, youâll have to go hang out with Waltâ you smirk.Â
âThatâs just coldâ Ransom mutters shaking his head before smirking as he squeezed your side and makes you squeal with laughter.Â
âIâm sorry I meant Joniâ you laugh.Â
Ransom laughed shaking his head âI actually donât know if that's better or worseâ
âDepends on if she tries to talk to you about spiritual shitâ you chuckle.Â
âTrue, now câmon shall we finish that series we started,â Ransom asks as he grabs the remote.Â
âSure I wanna see whether they found that witnessâ you agree making yourself comfortable as Ransom sticks on the courtroom drama you had been watching the past couple of days.Â
You were halfway through the second episode of the night when your exhaustion from all the planning caught up to you. A mixture of that and the warmth Ransom was giving out soon lulled you to sleep.Â
To begin with, you just had normal dreams, nothing seemed out of place. But then you started seeing flashes of memories. Like always they didn't make much sense, they were like quick snapshots of your life before the accident. You had no context for any of them meaning it often left you trying to piece together the pieces of your life.Â
You saw flashes of your childhood, times of you playing with toys and out in the backyard. You also saw memories from what you assumed was your time at university, sitting in class, and the parties you went to. You saw times you spent in an office, presumably the marketing job that you left.Â
Finally, your brain seemed to fixate on one memory.Â
You were walking down the streets of Boston, it was a cold night and you wrapped your leather jacket around you tighter as you walked. Glancing to your left you saw a couple of other women walking with you, both of them dressed up for a night out like you were. You could hear them laughing and talking loudly, one of them with long blonde hair linking her arm with yours and smiling over at you.Â
You turned the corner and spotted a bar a few feet away, one that you definitely recognised. Walking inside the place was packed and there was a live band playing at the far end. Glancing around other peopleâs heads you could only just about see the lead singer. He had the typical boyish charm that any musician had, he was hot, with his built body and short light brown hair, and he knew it as he winked at the girls in the front.Â
You felt your friend nudge you in the side, a look on her face when she caught you checking out the lead singer. She shouted something to you but you couldnât make it out, you shouted something back shrugging your shoulders casually. Your friend rolled her eyes at you before dragging you over to the bar.Â
The night rolled on and you drank far too many drinks, you also found yourself looking over at the lead singer multiple times. You felt your cheeks grow warm whenever he caught your gaze, and sent a wink your way, much to the annoyance of your friends.Â
You then noticed the crowd begin to part as someone walks toward you. You felt yourself smile as Ransom comes into view, his appearance was different to normal though. His hair was shorter and fluffier, there was no hair gel in sight, and his beard was back and much thicker than ever. He smiled at you walking up to you, placing his hand on the small of your back as he leaned down to kiss you.Â
He said something to you and once again you couldn't hear what he said. You nodded in response reaching up to kiss him once more, sliding your hand into his and letting him lead you out of the bar. Once out into the cool air he wraps his arm around you tightly, pulling you into his side to keep you warm. Once you reached his black Audi he opened the passenger door for you pressing yet another kiss to your lips before you climbed into the car.Â
You woke with a start blinking a couple of times as you got your bearings, realising you were still curled up on the couch with Ransom. You glance up to see Ransom looking down at you with an amused smirk.Â
âSomebody seems tiredâ he comments smiling down at you.Â
âYeah- yeah I guess soâ you mutter rubbing your forehead as you settled back down.Â
You tried to focus on the TV program, see if you could work out what youâd missed, but you couldn't your mind was solely on your dream. You were trying to place it on the timeline you had been trying and failing to build with the rest of your memories. You had to guess that it happened after your trip to Florida, Ransomâs hair was a similar length, and you guess he just decided to grow the beard out some more.Â
Looking back up at Ransom you pursed your lips as you took in his profile. You had to admit you liked the way he looked with a beard. You definitely preferred it over his clean-shaven look.Â
âWhy did you shave your beard?â you ask suddenly.Â
You felt Ransom freeze for a second before shifting in his seat âwhat do you mean?â he asks clearing his throat.Â
âI just remember you having a beard, and I was wondering why you decided to get rid of it,â you ask sitting up slightly.Â
Ransom shrugs his shoulders clearing his throat a couple of times before answering âI just preferred it withoutâ he offers âyou did too, you said it was too scratchyâÂ
âOhâ you mutter frowning slightly because right now you definitely preferred the look of it âyeah I guess that makes senseâ
âYeah, hey um itâs late and weâre tired why donât we head to bed,â Ransom says quickly standing up from the couch and turning off the TV before you got a chance to say otherwise.Â
âOh um yeah sureâ you stutter standing up from the couch.
You barely had a chance to stand before Ransom took your hand and practically dragged you up the stairs. You frown in confusion at his strange behaviour, unsure what the cause was. You were going to question it when you reached the bedroom but you didn't get a chance.Â
Ransom suddenly turned around to face you, his large hands moving to cup your cheeks âI love you so muchâ he mutters before kissing you deeply.Â
Any thoughts you had disappeared as he kissed you passionately, your brain completely shutting down as he held you. No protest in sight as he stripped the both of you of your clothes and had his wicked way with you.Â
You were standing in the guest room that used to be your bedroom when you first returned after your accident. Standing on a small circular platform you looked at the mirror in front of you examining the current wedding dress you wore.Â
It was a gorgeous dress you couldn't deny it, and you looked amazing in it, but it just didn't feel perfect. But it was the last dress on the rack, and none of the ones before worked either. You pursed your lip in thought as you tried to work out what you didnât like about it, but you couldnât pinpoint a single reason.Â
âWhat do you think?â the lady asks as she takes a step back, biting her lip nervously.Â
âI- uh- I think it's lovely,â you say turning slightly to look at the sides and back.Â
âIt sounds like thereâs a but thereâ the lady sighs looking up at you.Â
You try not to wince, you knew how far out of her way she had gone to be here to help you find a dress today. Bringing in the platform and large mirror, as well as many different dresses that were all your specific size.Â
âIâm not sure, I donât know what it is though⊠I just⊠it feels weird wearing a wedding dressâ you admit looking down at the gown.Â
âYes, putting a dress on does make it feel much more real to a lot of people, for some it makes them even more excited, for others, it makes them nervous⊠or even scaredâ the lady explains as she adjusts the train of the dress.Â
âYeah⊠â you say glancing down at her and noticing the odd look in her eyes âthat must be itâ you mutter looking back over at the mirror.Â
You see her go to say something but get interrupted by the sound of the front door slamming shut so loudly that it shook the entire house. The both of you froze as you heard Ransom storm through the bottom floor of the house, the sound of him grabbing the bottle of scotch echoing.Â
âI um should go see if heâs okay, can you just wait here?â you ask stepping off the platform.Â
âYes, of course, let me help you out of the dress, bad luck and all that,â she says quickly moving to help you.Â
You mutter a quick thanks, stepping out of the dress and pulling on the silk gown you wore between each dress. You hurried out of the room and down the stairs, finding Ransom in the kitchen, braced against the kitchen counter, a glass of scotch in front of him. His head hung low and you noticed the tension in his shoulders.Â
âRansom? Whatâs wrong?â you ask cautiously approaching.Â
He looked up from the floor and you instantly see the despair and worry in his eyes âit's Harlanâ he choked out, his voice breaking.Â
You felt your heart sink in worry, instantly rushing over to Ransom, putting your hand on his arm âwhatâs wrong? Is he?â you ask dreading the worse.Â
âNoâ Ransom muttered shaking his head âbut heâs taken a turn for the worse, and the doctors say it doesn't look goodâ he explains, biting his lip as he tried to hold back his tears âhe might not make it to the end of the month, to our wedding,â he says barely holding himself together.Â
âOh, Ransom Iâm so sorryâ you mutter, welling up yourself as you pull him into your embrace.Â
He buried his head into the crook of your neck and you feel the wetness of his tears against your skin as he completely broke down in your arms. Your heart broke for him but you knew there was nothing you could do so you just held him.
After a few moments he pulled away, using the sleeve of his sweater to wipe away his tears âI just- heâs the only person Iâve ever wanted at my wedding and- and now- he- he might-â Ransom shakes his head, unable to finish his sentence.Â
Your mind raced as a way to try and fix it, and you could only think of one solution. One solution that utterly terrified you but you knew it was the right thing to do.Â
âLet's move the wedding forward thenâ you suggest.Â
Ransom looks down at you his eyes wide in surprise âwhat?â he asks.Â
âLet's move it forward, heâs the only person we want there, we donât need anything or anyone else so let's just get married with him and Marta thereâ you explain.
Ransom blinks a couple of times âreally? Cause weâd have to do it in a week's time or somethingâ he says shaking his head gently.Â
âYeahâ you whisper âlet's do itâÂ
A smile breaks out on his face through the tears, his hands cupping your cheeks as he kissed you deeply âthank you so so much, I love you so muchâ he muttered against your lips.Â
âIt's okayâ you whisper looking at him through your lashes âwhy donât you go upstairs and get some rest, Iâll just finish what I was doing and see you up there?â you suggest.Â
Ransom nods his head kissing you once more before making his way upstairs. Once he was out of sight you let out a long and shaky breath. You were getting married next week, in just 7 days you would be Mrs Drysdale and it was terrifying. You had to do this though, for Ransom.Â
You made your way back up the stairs, stopping first by the guest room where the lady was waiting for you.Â
âEverything okay?â she asked as you stepped inside.Â
âYeah,â you say clearing your throat âthat last dress, thatâs the one,â you tell her.Â
âOh, thatâs great! Iâll make sure it's all ready for your wedding next monthâ the lady smiles breathing out a sigh of relief.Â
âActually I need it by the end of the week,â you tell her.Â
She looks back at you in confusion âwhat-why?â she asks.Â
âWeâre moving it forward, an important family member might not be around next month so weâre getting married in a week so we can have him presentâ you explain rubbing your forehead.Â
âOh Iâm so sorry, well um since the dress already fits I can just leave it here and send you the invoice?â she suggests.Â
âThat would be amazing thank youâ you breathe out.Â
She gives you a small smile âit's nothing, now I can pack this all up and get out of your hair, seems like your fiance needs you more right nowâ she suggests.Â
âYes he does, thank you for your help todayâ you thank her before heading out.
You walk the short distance from the guest room to your bedroom, finding Ransom lying in bed, staring up at the ceiling. He was now shirtless, only wearing a pair of flannel trousers.
âHey,â you say getting his attention as you walked over âhow are you feeling,â you ask climbing onto the bed next to him.Â
âShittyâ he admits âbut better thanks to youâ he sighs wrapping his arm around you and pulling you into his side.Â
âIt was nothingâ you mutter shaking your head.Â
âHey,â Ransom says cupping your cheek getting you to look at him âyou did so much, I donât know what I do without youâ he admits before leaning down to press a sweet chaste kiss to your lips.Â
âI just want to make you happy,â you say quietly.Â
âIâm getting there,â Ransom says forcing a small smile.Â
âWhat else can I do? What do you needâ you ask him hand running over his chest.Â
Ransom didn't say anything for a moment making you look up at him, instantly noticing the look in his eyes, one that made them look dark. He then grabs you moving you so you were straddling his waist.Â
âI need youâ he mutters under his breath.Â
âOh,â you whisper.Â
Your heart thumps heavily in your chest, a shudder running through your body, you were about to suggest that it wasnt a good idea but then you saw the pleading look in his eyes. So you nodded your head and let him pull away your gown and push down his trousers. Your bodies connected as he guided your hips down onto him, using you to work through his emotions.Â
Once he was done you both curled up and let the exhaustion of the day take over. It wasn't long until dreams and subsequently, memories found you.Â
You were sitting at your desk but your work had been abandoned. Instead, you were chatting and laughing with your colleagues, exchanging gossip and catching up with their personal lives.Â
The blond from before was halfway through a story when she smirked and nodded over to the elevator âlooks like it's time for your lunchâ she comments looking over at you.Â
Looking over at the elevator you saw Ransom walking over, he had his short fluffy hair and beard again which you just loved. He also wore a white crisp shirt and black suit that made your mouth water, because damn he looked good in a shirt and tie. All you could think about was what heâd look like with the sleeves rolled up.Â
âReady to go honey?â Ransom asked the pet name he used catching you by surprise.Â
âOf courseâ you smile quickly locking your computer and standing up from your desk.Â
Ransom smiles taking your hand and leading you toward the elevator. You had just stepped inside when your blond colleague called out to the both of you âweâre on a tight deadline so no detours today Andy!â she smirks.Â
You wake up with a start, your head screaming in pain causing you to sit upright. Your chest was heaving your heart pounding in your chest as you replayed your dream.
You had seen Ransom. But they called him Andy. But to you, he looked like Ransom. You couldn't remember an Andy. Looking over to Ransom who was fast asleep dread settled in your stomach, because if that man in your dream wasnât Ransom⊠who was he?

Little bit late, but better than never! I have compiled all the questions Iâve gotten following the final part of Memory Served, these are questions Iâve gotten from various different platforms, messages, comments and asks!Â
obviously this will contain spoilers so go check out the series if you havenât already done so!
Did Ransom know Y/N before the accident?
Yes, that flashback she had of him was true. They had met at a book event party (she works in book marketing for a different publisher based in Newton) and she turned him down.Â
What was Ransomâs motive?
this answer is a little vague because I am planning a sequel so all iâll say is that after Y/N turned him down he then overheard her saying less than complimentary things about him and decided to prove her wrong.
Did Walt know about Ransomâs plan?
No, heâs just a dick and said those things to make Y/N feel uncomfortable
What was his plan for when she remembered everything?
He hoped that heâd won her over enough that she would stay with him anyway but he also planned to just trap her in a marriage and make it impossible for her to divorce him or live without him
Why didnât the people in the restaurant not recognise her?
They did, but Ransom had blackmailed and forced them to sign NDAs
Did his family not recognise her, or know there was a woman missing?
No, theyâre too wrapped up in themselves to pay attention to anything else
Were the cops and the hospital involved?
Not all of them, but some yes
Did Ransom take inspriation from the book Walk mentioned?
Yep, because where else is better to take inspiration from!
How does the Y/N, Frank, and Andy all know each other?
Frank and Andy became friends while studying at Harvard, Andy went on to become a lawyer while Frank went to work at a different university as an assitant professor. Y/N was a mature student, a good few years younger than Frank and Andy, she was studying marketing when she met Frank and they started hooking up. They eventually called it off, and after graduating Y/N meets and falls in love with Andy and by this time Frank has moved to Florida. suffice to say when Andy introduced Y/N to Frank it was a little awkward but they all saw the humour in it! They all remained in contact, Andy and Y/N helping Frank out during the custody battle over Mary.Â
Let me know if you have anymore questions and Iâll add them to this list!
