That’s a wrap! David loves his 2018 photo album. Against all odds we were able to collect fabulous memory seeds this year. We’ve also seen a few ones blooming unexpectedly into exotic flowers. There were a lot of dancing, painting, swimming, laughing, yogaing, theatre going, walking, exploring as well as some less colourful moments. But not that many or I already forgot about them. My wish for 2019 is simple, to keep on trusting D&I’s truth. To keep on believing in the power of all these small things each of us do regularly alone and together just because it lift us. What else is there anyway for us but our fleeting togetherness? Beyond paralysing notions of death, heartbreak, terminal illness I hope we can find the strength to keep on embracing the now so we can go on connecting to each other in the now and grow somehow. Just like we’ve done thanks to many people open to the slightly unexpected like all the kind souls we had the chance to cross path with and have had around in 2018. We found him! David’s grand-dad aka John Racine Boxall. Thanks to Anne Cowne who looked into the abyss of the Society’s archives with us. While plowing through the so called bible she told us they lost a fair amount of these precious books over the years. So we were ecstatic when she did manage to find a record of John’s time there. He started working aged 19 in 1895, not long after his marriage with Agnes Clark, a school teacher from Dundee in Scotland. I added a picture of their wedding. He stayed until September 1942. He wasn’t a surveyor but had raised to the senior ranks as he was earning £720 by then which seems a fair amount of money at the time. He was based at the London Office but may have traveled widely to the other offices to meet with ship owners etc. It may explain his large collection of oriental, mainly Japanese, artefacts . David still has a few items that he cherishes as it brings him back to conversations he had with his grand-dad as a teenager. We even found a new picture of John at the Savoy in 1934 where he celebrated the centenary of the Society’s reconstitution (see pic attached). David is beaming and I am unexpectedly enthralled by this new fact checking expedition. Thanks again Ann for sharing your wealth of knowledge with us and for your invaluable support. David still remembers her as she lived until she was close to a 100 years old! And he told me he was the one who first found her dead which must be quite traumatic for a small boy. Second step towards unearthing a new memory seed i.e information linking David’s beloved grand-father, John Racine Boxall, and Lloyd’s Register of Shipping. The old entrance - aka the 19th century Collcutt building - is closed so we had to go down the rabbit hole to find the new hidden entrance. After a friendly insider passing by showed us the way, we eventually found the new part of the building. We entered a glass tower designed by the renowned architect Richard Rogers and completed in 2000 after uncovering traces of the first Roman settlement dating from the first century AD. #unearthing #memoryseeds #thanks4remembering (at Lloyd's Register)
