The apartment was dark, the one exception being the bare bulb emanating light from the lone lamp, its shade long forgotten but still useful in its simplicity. The two young men sat on the ragged brown and yellow plaid couch, a burn hole and a blood stain the most recent additions since they moved in. Smoke rings elegantly billowed from between Matts lips, hovering like ghosts given life and form from the air that had once dwelled inside his lungs. Mello stared at him intensely, and the familiar cracking of milk chocolate brought an unintentional grin to Matt’s face before taking another drag of his cigarette.
This night seemed like many others they had shared before, but it was undoubtedly different. There was no contact of Mello’s stopping by with a drop off or information, no friend of Matt’s coming over to sleep off one too many beers, not even the pizza delivery guy with their usual sausage, peppers, and onions pie that was customary for a Friday night, the only perk of being low on cash until Mello’s cut from the latest mafia transaction came through.
Tonight they were truly alone.
Leaning his cheek against the back of his hand, a smirk took over Mello’s features. “Are you going to just sit there all night burning through that pack of smokes or what?”
Matt laughed. “You got a better plan?”
“I can think of better things you can do with your mouth.” Mello pinched the cigarette from Matt’s lips, crushing it against the side of an empty Mountain Dew can before offering the butt to its sugary grave inside the can before leaning inches from his face. “You know I don’t like the taste of cigarettes on your breath.”
“Lucky for you I like the taste of chocolate, huh?”
