yeppp. i think melli doesn’t particularly like children (something something flimsy little noodle) but as peridot gets older she starts to share the kind of stubborn hyper-independent attitude melli has. the difference is that while melli is loyal to duty, peridot likes to do her own thing in her own way. melli cares about people a lot more than he lets on (showing genuine concern for the player later in the game for example) so he probably does what he can to keep peridot out of trouble. adaman was a role model to melli so melli might fancy himself a role model to peridot. at this point in time there’s been a lot of development in adaman and melli’s relationship, which seemed strained yet largely unresolved in legends arceus (adaman was underbaked in general but i’m taking his writing into my own hands) so melli has grown as a person significantly and might not be so obsessed with proving that he’s good enough of a warden and a little brother. i do think he would be quick to drag her by the ear and rat her out to adaman if he caught her sneaking out or something 😭 he means well though.
