Day 40: In the Port of Melbourne. Melbourne is the second most populous city in Australia. The metropolis is located on the large natural bay known as Port Phillip, with the city Center situated at the estuary of the Yarra river. Often referred to as the “cultural capital of Australia” and the city is often placed alongside New York and Berlin as one of the world’s great street art meccas, and is also admired for its exciting mix of vigorous modern architecture which intersects with the nineteenth and early twentieth century buildings. On the day we explored the city Center with its great tram system which, by the way, is free to use in the central area. A start on the Queen Victoria Market will give you a hint that Melbourne is a culinary heaven. If you are a fan of Japanese food like I am, here you will have some of the best. But Melbourne offers everything from South East Asian, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean flavours to American. We also explored the Botanical garden, close to the city center. A wonderful place to lose yourself in sweeping lawns and countless native and exotic plants, there’s even a cactus garden. Other things we saw on the day were the Shrine of Remembrance, Federation Square, Fitzroy Gardens and Parliament House. Melbourne was definitely a place to go back to and even a place where I could see myself living. But for now, I still had another day to enjoy Melbourne in 4 days time.
