i'm reading "stranger at the gate" for class which is an autobiography about mel white who talks about growing up gay in a conservative christian family in the 60s-80s and it's hittin me so personally like? he was in the closet for decades and experienced both internal and external homophobia due to growing up w conservative christians and he did so much to "turn straight" and "cure homophobia" he even did shock therapy?? i know that he's out now and has a husband and is living with him and i hope that after all these years he's living a rly happy life with the man that he loves and that he's finally at peace after all these years

All of my gay Christian friends ought to read Mel White’s Stranger at the Gate. For a long time I thought I was too good for it — yeah, I’m a gay Christian, I have no problem being a gay Christian, I don’t need to hear from some older white ex-evangelical about it — but I’m reading it now and it is just a great reminder of what life was like in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. White’s story especially highlights what I see as one of the most important points about gay liberation: we have always been here. There were always gay people in church, there were always gay people trying to follow Jesus, there were always gay people in ministry to other members of the body of Christ.
Moreover, the AIDS epidemic really changed White: He doesn’t talk about it in-depth, but it’s clear in his story that the absolute nastiness of the Christian Right’s response to HIV/AIDS is what prompted him to come out more visibly, to take a stand.
It’s not a theoretical text, and I would never argue that White has particularly good politics, but it’s a compelling look at his story and the struggles gay men in that era faced — and especially what being a gay Christian man trying to be faithful to Jesus was like. White describes so many times of being ready to die, of wanting to escape who he was, and of God coming through for him and saving him. On that level, it’s a story not just about being gay and Christian, but about Jesus and resurrection.
