It was difficult these days to get the whole gang together and only them, no girlfriends or friends. But since he’s and Matt’s near misses they’d been trying to do it more. Sometimes it meant going someplace, like camping or something, and just seeing what they got up to. Other times it was like tonight where they played quidditch and ate pizza. It had been a great night so far. Hopefully his news didn’t change that. Looking around at his siblings he realized that this was it, his news was gonna change everything. Even though he hoped they still had their time alone it wouldn’t be the same, nothing would be the same. In a way it already wasn’t the same, he’d told Matt, he’d bought the ring for Merlin’s sake. Mike knew they’d be all right without him, any doubts he had about that had been erased when he was in the hospital. There was a part of him that hoped they weren’t too all right without him. That wasn’t fair to his siblings though, especially considering he was the one moving on to the next part of his life. No more middle of the night shenanigans. He’d be the last to hear whatever news the others had. Probably wouldn’t even know some of it. Already that was becoming the case. The Prewetts had their birds. MJ did whatever the fuck she did now that school was out and Gid was occupied. Max and Matt had their own things. They were all going their own ways, Mike was just the first to make it official.
Looking around he decided now was as good a time as any. Gid was tossing olives at MJ. Max had just finished telling Fabian and Matt about some bird he’d snogged the night before. Best to do it before the two youngest started a full fledged food fight. “Oi!” Mike called out loudly to get their attention. “I gotta something I need to tell ya.” He looked around one more time, gave Matt a nod before continuing. “I’m gonna ask Penny to marry me.” The direct approach so there could be no question what was going on.
