Jim slowly became aware of his surroundings. He stretched lazily and then wrapped himself around Bones again.
âMorninâ Bonesâ He said, resting his head against the other manâs neck. If anyone had told him twenty years ago that he would have someone to wake up with every day, he would have told them they were crazy.
The old Jim Kirk hadnât been the type who wouldâve settled down, but meeting Bones had changed that.
âMorning darlinââ Bones replied, turning over to face Jim.
The kiss was slow and tender, and when they pulled apart again, Jim was smiling
âWhat did I ever do to deserve you Bones?â He asked.
âI could ask you the same thingâ Bones replied.
Jim wasnât sure how long they stayed in bed, happy to stay in each otherâs arms. Finally, Jim broke the silence.
âHow long do you think itâll be before the kids get up?â
âTheyâll probably be up soonâ Bones replied, pulling Jim in closer. As if on cue, three kids came barrelling through the door.
That was another thing Jim had never thought heâd have: kids. When Bones had first brought up the idea of adopting kids, Jim had hesitated. He had been worried that he wouldnât be a good dad to their kids because heâd never had a real father figure himself. But Bones had been there to comfort him, and eventually, they had agreed to apply for adoption.
And now they had not only one, but three wonderful kids.
âDaddy, daddy!â their youngest, Abbie, shrieked as she jumped onto the bed.
âHey monkeyâ Jim said. Their other two kids, George and Sam, had joined them on the bed too.
âIâm not a monkeyâ The little girl giggled.
âIâm gonna go get breakfast startedâ Bones said, sitting up.
Following him into the kitchen, Jim sat down at the table with Abbie on one side and the boys on the other. Although he had never been a very good cook himself, he enjoyed watching Bones cook.
No words were spoken as the breakfast was being prepared, and a moment later, Jimâs attention was drawn to his kids.
âHere you go, darlinâ. Pancakes should be ready in a minuteâ Bones set down a cup of steaming cup of coffee in front of Jim.
âThanksâ Jim said, leaning in for a kiss.
âEw, thatâs grossâ Abbie said, her nose wrinkled in disgust.

Summary: At first Leonard was wary of letting Jim pick the the song for their first dance, but really, he couldnât have picked a better one if he tried.
AO3
Leonard never thought heâd be doing this again. The falling in love thing. The relationship thing.
The wedding thing.
Throughout the planning process, Leonard had been adamant about not wanting to get overly worked up about anything. He wanted to enjoy this. He wanted to enjoy the man whoâd be standing by his side for the rest of his life, the man who had been standing by him since the day they met.
Even so, when Jim said he had the perfect song in mind for their first dance together but he wanted it to be a surprise, Leonard was weary. Jim had anâŚinteresting taste in music, and he was worried heâd end up dancing to some Beast Boys tune (âBeastie Boys, Bones! And shut up, theyâre amazingâ).
But really, when it came to the two of them, Jim had never let him down.
So he really shouldnât have been surprised by the song Jim picked.
Youâve got a friend in me
Youâve got a friend in me
When the road looks rough ahead
And youâre miles and miles
From your nice warm bed
You just remember what your old pal said
Boy, youâve got a friend in me
Yeah, youâve got a friend in me
It was perfect.
It was them.
Youâve got a friend in me
Youâve got a friend in me
If youâve got troubles, Iâve got âem too
There isnât anything I wouldnât do for you
We stick together and can see it through
Cause youâve got a friend in me
Youâve got a friend in me
âSo what dâyou think?â Jim asked, cheery voice hiding a touch of insecurity as they moved together along the dance floor.
âItâs perfect, Jim,â Leonard said earnestly. âYouâre perfect.â
âI am perfect.â
âYouâre the worst.â
âYou love me.â
âYeah, I do.â
But none of them will ever love you
The way I do, itâs me and you
Boy, and as the years go by
Our friendship will never die
Youâre gonna see itâs our destiny
Youâve got a friend in me
Youâve got a friend in meÂ

Summary: In the time honored tradition of every sailor, everyone who crosses the Equator must undergo the Shellbacking Ceremony. With the expansion of space travel, Shellbacking has evolved into a right of passage for a sailorâs first trip beyond the Sol System. The USS Enterprise crew is about to undergo this ritual. Leonard is not happy. Leonard is going to murder Jim when this is all over.
AO3
So Shellbacking is a real thing that many Navyâs do throughout the world, so I thought it would be an interesting concept to bring to Star Trek. Jim has likely already been Shellbacked while out on a training mission during the Academy, so he is of course going to get the honor of being King Neptune, being the captain and all. Bones, on the otherhand, is merely a Pollywog (someone who hasnât been Shellbacked yet) and will be undergoing the Ceremony...
âKneel before Neptunus Rex, Pollywog McCoy,â the Royal Judge, Lieutenant Commander Giotto called, and Leonard trudged forward and got to one knee, giving the âKingâ his most terrifying glare. It might have worked if Jim wasnât so goddamn smug in his position.
âPollywog McCoy,â Jim began in a booming voice, dressed head to toe in âroyalâ regalia, âyou have been called before the Court for a heinous transgression! You are accused of injecting yourself with grumpiness--â
âWhat the fuck--?â
âSilence!â Jim boomed, and Leonard made a mental note to up the amount of hypos Jim would âneedâ at his next physical. âInjecting yourself with grumpiness with the sole intention of scaring those around you. The Court finds you guilty of your charge, and I sentence you to wearing a sign of cheer and merriment for the rest of the proceedings. Davy Jones, if you would.â
Jim beckoned to the side, where Uhura, clad in classic Davy Jones attire appeared with a folded set of--
âIâm not wearing a fucking jester outfit,â Leonard hissed, and Jim only smirked before falling back into character.
âYou will wear your sentence, or else face an extra five laps through the dreaded Space Bath!â
Thinking of the crap that was likely going to be thrown into said bath, Leonard decided the jester outfit was definitely the safest bet. But Jim would certainly have hell to pay when this was all said and done.
âNow dance for the Court, Pollywog!â
Never mind the hypos, Leonard was going to murder him.
Bones could feel his heart pounding in his chest as he ran. He was moving on autopilot, not paying any attention to the brightly lit hallways or to the people in it. All he could think about was getting down to engineering.
Why did Jim have to be such a god damn reckless fool?
What on Earth had made him think that jumping into an active warp core was a good idea?
Spotting Scotty ahead of him, Bones finally stopped running. âWhere is he?â Scotty didnât hear him at first, seeming lost in a daze.
âWhere is he?!â Bones shouted, shaking Scotty. Scotty finally nodded towards the compartment leading to the warp core.
Bones felt his blood run cold.
âJimâŚâ He breathed, kneeling in front of the compartment.
â... Bonesâ Jimâs voice was weak, and it broke Bonesâ heart. âIt hurtsâŚâ
âI know, darlinââ His voice is thick with emotion as he speaks. This was everything he had feared. Heâd always known that Jim had no sense of self-preservation, and he had prayed that this day would never come.
And yet, despite everything theyâd been through, despite all the dangerous situations Jim had put himself in, they had always come out of it alright.
âYou canât come back from this, Jimâ Bones said. He could feel tears forming in the corners of his eyes with the realization that he would in fact not be able to save Jim.
âI know. IâŚâ Bones can tell that Jim is struggling to speak. âI had to⌠save everyone⌠had to⌠save youâ
Damn it.
âOpen the door!â Bones was facing Scotty as he spoke. The rest of the bridge crew were standing around, seeming unsure what to do. Bones didnât care.
âI gave you an order, lieutenant commander!â Bones barked when Scotty didnât answer.
âIâm afraid I cannae do that, sir. It will flood the rest of engineering with radiationâ It was like a punch to the gut. For several long moments, Bones just stared at Scotty. He could see tears in the other manâs eyes, and he most likely didnât look any better himself.
Turning back to Jim, Bones sank to his knees again. âJimâŚâ He could see that Jimâs eyes were almost closed. He seemed too weak to speak, so instead, he just brought up his right hand and placed it against the glass.
The simple, silver band on his ring finger reflected the light of the compartment.
Finally, Bones let his tears fall as he brought up his own hand to touch the glass where Jim was holding his hand.
Bones wanted to cry when Jim finally opened his eyes again. It had been months of sleepless nights and too much coffee, but Jim was finally awake.
Khanâs blood had worked.
Bones leaned in closer to Jim, cupping his face. For a long moment, they stared at each other without speaking, but then Jim spoke.
âBonesâŚâ There was so much awe in that one word, it almost made Bones want to cry. âYou saved meâ
âYeahâ thereâs so much more that Bones want to say, but the lump in his throat wonât let him. Instead, he lets go of Jimâs face and reaches for the chain around his neck.
When he pulled out the rings, Jimâs eyes widen slightly. âYou kept them?â
âI didâ After everything that had happened, Bones had needed something to hold onto, and their wedding rings had seemed like the best option. He had stopped wearing his own when Jim died, choosing instead to wear it with Jimâs ring.
Without a word, he slid the smaller of the two rings onto Jimâs finger, and then pulled Jim in for a kiss.
