The drink next appeared in print within Harry McElhone's 1921 Harry's ABC of Mixing Cocktails, and it called for 1/3 brandy, 1/3 crème de menthe and 2/3 Cointreau. still not a great drink. The drink we recognise today didn't appear until 1923, when McElhone opened Harry's New York Bar in Paris and is the one for which I give the recipe. The recipe can be found in its most recognisable form in Harry Craddock's 1930 The Savoy Cocktail Book, leading to confusion of who created it first. My money is on McElhone.

McElhone's/Craddock's White Lady is essentially a Side-Car with gin in lieu of brandy, hence alternatively being referred to as a Chelsea side-car, and it's a good way to remember this one. Here it is.

The White Lady

2 oz Gin

1/2 oz Cointreau

1/2 oz Lemon Juice

McElhone adds an egg white here, so do I

Shake with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
