What a special day. Bottlenose dolphins and seals on the same day! Mwnt is a very special beach at the beat of times. Nestled away in the Ceredigionshire cliffs just around the corner from the Teifi estuary, this is a stunning beach to paddle from. It's a regular haunt for Dolphins and seals, so you've got a pretty good chance of seeing them. But even if you don't, the abundance of seabirds, channels and caves on the southern side make it a stunning place to explore. The sometimes confused refracted and reflected swell makes it a fun paddle at times as well. After the steep walk down, Jen was first out. No mammals and she stayed dry. Then Andy went out in the middle of the bay and bumped into a seal. No photos because he followed the marine mammal code and kept his distance. The seal/s popped up three times between dives but kept a respectful distance from him. Not curious enough to get close enough for a photo-opp with #McConks. Then Jen went back out with Ollie on the nose to see if they could find the seal. They didn't, but bumped into a small pod of Bottlenose dolphins. Watching the beautiful animals play and hunt is more important than an jnsta moment. After observing for about 5-10 mins Jen paddled back as fast as she could so Toby and Andy could have a chance to see them (and that's fast with this race board!). Toby was too busy making dams and forts, so Andy went back out with Ollie. A brisk 5 minute paddle and Andy and Ollie were back in the Dolphin zone. Amazingly they were still there, and Andy and Ollie watched them play for another 10 minutes or so. A brief paddle across the bay to see if they could find the seals again (no luck) before heading back to shore. Being the only ones on the water, watching these distant, intelligent cousins in the water, is a very special experience that we'll never forget. If you're ever lucky enough to be in that position, make sure you treat them with the respect they deserve.
