it's a big one, a long one, a momentous one...
â...I was talking about the show, and I could tell halfway through that theyâd already stopped listening.â
She nodded faintly. âMy mom called first,â she said. âThenâŚâ She hesitated, face tightening again. âAnd... someone else basically told me I should stop getting so emotional over a 'small gallery show'.â
The way she said someone else told him enough to make Warrenâs name flare hot in the back of his mind, but he kept his mouth shut.
Max stared down at the desk in front of her. âI know Chase Space isnât some huge museum,â she said. âI know itâs not a retrospective at the MoMA or whatever. I know Iâm not famous, but... it still matters to me.â
âOf course it should,â Nathan said. "Fuck them."
Maxâs mouth trembled faintly, like she didnât know whether to smile or cry again.
âThatâs a very measured response.â
âI know.â Her eyes dropped to her lap. âThatâs why I called you, I think.â
Something in his chest dropped hearing thatâ hearing her say it so point blank.
âYou... look at my work and you actually see it,â she said softly. âOr at least, you try to. You donât just... nod, and say something polite. You notice things, and you ask questions I actually want to answer.â Her throat bobbed. âAnd tonight I just⌠I really didnât want another person telling me not to overreact.â
He stared at her, pulse beating hard in his throat now for a completely different reason.
There it was againâthat dangerous feeling from the phone call last night, from the darkroom, from every tiny private exchange that made him feel like she was stepping closer to him in some way he couldnât quite put words to, but...
