Cassie McKay was a pervert. A deeply depraved and pathetic grown woman. That was the only explanation Cassie’s brain had been able to come up with ever since Victoria Javadi had started her rotation at the Pitt. From the moment they got paired up together in the ER, McKay had been fighting an internal battle she couldn’t tell anyone in her life about.  This had taken place well over two months ago. Every day Cassie swore her feelings were more intense than the ones before. Things she couldn’t put into words before had now developed into full-on journey entries. Normally, she tried to use her diary maybe once or twice a month. It had since turned into a daily habit of hers. A way to get all of her disturbingly horny thoughts out of her system.  Most nights, this ended with Cassie touching and fingering herself until all she could mutter was Victoria’s name. Every time, she promised her journal it would be the last time. Every time, she knew this was a complete lie and that she could never truly get enough. “Victoria?” A comforting voice spoke from the other line. “Dr. McKay?” Victoria could feel her pulse quickening, her cortisol levels at an all-time high. “Is everything okay? And please call me Cassie, honey.” The gentleness of her words made Javadi want to cry. Though she felt vulnerable calling someone in this state, and knew she would regret this later on, she couldn’t help but feel extremely grateful for the mere presence of someone who cared, even if it was just on the phone. Her eyes welled up as she tried to put her feelings into words. “I feel like I can’t breathe, my hands can’t stop tingling and I’m not sure I can even move my legs. What the fuck am I supposed to do? I’m so scared, Cassie. I want to go home, I need to…” She trailed off, tears softly trickling down her cheeks. “Okay, okay, what happened? Can you tell me where you are, sweetheart?” Cassie’s voice remained ever so steady, offering Javadi the stability she so desperately needed in that moment.

She let out a soft sigh, which caused Victoria to look at her for the first time that evening. “You know you don’t have to talk about what happened, but I just want to know if you’re okay.” Cassie ignored the urge to reach out, trying to convey her feelings with words alone. “Being here is making me feel better, I promise.” She purposely dodged the question, which didn’t go unnoticed. “Did you and your parents have a fight?” She tentatively asked, contradicting her own words by asking Victoria about what happened. Victoria simply shook her head. “We were talking about politics.” She softly shrugged, sitting up straighter. “That almost never ends well.” She said empathetically, having plenty of hands on experience with conservative relatives. Understanding just how much stuff like that could hurt, she remained patient and waited for Victoria to speak up again. If she was going to tell Cassie anything, the least Cassie could do was go at Victoria’s pace. “It was stupid of me to bring it up.” A single tear slid down her cheek, causing Cassie to frown. “Bring what up?” Victoria’s eyes traveled down to her lap, her hands fidgeting with the blanket that had previously been draped over the couch and was now covering the bottom half of her body. “I like girls.”

When Victoria ascertained that Cassie wasn’t going to be able to get over whatever nerves she had to speak up first, she initiated the conversation once more. “So… what’s this super important thing you wanted to ask me?” Victoria tilted her head inquisitively, watching as Cassie’s cheeks stained with a vague tint of pink. “I wanted to ask you if you’d like to grab dinner sometime later this week. As in, like, a date.” Her throat felt insanely dry, but she didn’t dare tear her gaze from Victoria, anxiously awaiting her response.  Though she knew there was no real world in which Victoria would turn her down, not with the tenderness in her eyes whenever she looked at Cassie, she still felt incredibly nervous. She hadn’t asked anyone out in a long time, let alone someone who already mattered to her. And Victoria mattered a whole lot. “You took me all the way to your car to ask me that?” Victoria’s voice grew soft, a smile playing at her lips. Cassie could tell it made Victoria nervous as well. “You’re adorable, Cass.” She mumbled, the nickname on top of the compliment making Cassie’s face even redder whilst simultaneously toning down her apprehension. “Is that a yes?” She tentatively smiled back, trying to read Victoria’s expression. “Of course it’s a yes. Does Friday work for you?” The warmth in the younger woman’s expression got rid of any residual anxiety Cassie still held.

Chapter 3: My baby says she’s not afraid of that

Running all over the place, doing three things at once whilst maintaining a positive mood, was a superpower Cassie was set on perfecting. The fact that she was constantly walking from bed to bed also meant she got to stay very aware of what her colleagues were up to. Which was why, when she walked past the south wing of the ER to make her way to Central 13, she couldn’t help but overhear a familiar sound of laughter. A curtain blocked McKay’s view, but she was absolutely certain that it was Javadi’s giggles that were filling her ears. The same ones she had been on the receiving end of many times. Hearing her younger coworker replicate this behaviour to others made her stomach twist. Though Cassie only caught the last few sentences, she had heard enough to come to a plausible conclusion. “I’ll have to go check it out then.” The anxiety and simultaneous smile in Victoria’s voice were audible, solely ensuring McKay that what she had presumed was true; a patient was flirting with Javadi.  And Cassie understood, of course she understood why. She’d been trying to force herself to think about Victoria for months now, but remained unsuccessful. She, of all people, understood how incredibly easy it was to be drawn in by Javadi. But that didn’t mean she didn’t feel like doing everything in her power to drag Victoria away from the patient right then and there. She tried to calm herself, tried to tell herself that doing exactly that wouldn’t fix anything. In the end, her impulses won, as she pulled the curtain aside to reveal a young guy that looked like an absolute douche bag. Perhaps she was biased, but the guy was wearing a fucking beanie. Both heads turned to her, the patient’s face filled with apprehensiveness, whereas Victoria looked like she had just seen a ghost.

She was putting on cologne when her phone vibrated. Her initial thought was that it must be Vivian, reaching out to make sure their date was still on, or worse, cancel. But then she remembered they had failed to exchange digits. Then, she assumed it must be Chad, calling about something Harrison-related. This caused her cortisol levels to rise as she quickly reached for her phone. When she read the name Victoria Javadi, her heart didn’t stop its previously induced pounding. She picked up and forced herself to be cool about it, regaining some stability from knowing her son was okay. “Victoria?” She asked, uncertain of what she was about to hear. “Cassie, hi. I hope this isn’t a bad time for you, because I’d love to take you up on your offer. If it still stands, I mean.” Her voice sounded fragile, as if she was on the verge of tears. McKay found herself with a lump in her throat, an instant sense of sympathy washing over her at the sound of her friend’s distress. “Of course it still stands. You okay, hon?” She held her phone in one hand, using the other to put on her shoes and grab her car keys.
