Question:
Do you ship Miguel X spot? Judging by the art you posted in this app. (Also yummy spot art thanks)
The short answer is yes.
Long answer: Generally I think as characters they have a lot of potential dynamic wise. Miguel’s worst flaw is his need for control that ends up indirectly hurting people, while Spot’s worst flaw is his recklessness and complete lack of care for hypothetical damage he could do to others even though he tries to be considerate on a surface level.
Miguel’s entire existence (as we see him in the film) is dedicated to protecting the multiverse, so it’d be really interesting to see him grapple with how he might feel about Spot; someone whose very existence damages what he’s trying so hard to protect. Miguel lost everything when he made the one selfish choice to replace his alternate self, so to see him emotionally connect with an anomaly who might make him feel like he’s repeating that same mistake could make for compelling character growth. It’d be cool to see it go less poorly for him this time, for Miguel to grow past his nihilistic world view with the help of someone who completely turns said view on it’s head.
It’s likely that the turning point for his arc in the next movie will be him realizing that his typical method of dealing with anomalies has backfired on him given he cannot stop Spot through fighting, therefore forcing him to take a more emotionally driven approach to the situation. I only guess this because of the CinemaCon snippet we got, describing both their fight and Spot saying a more emotionally charged line to him afterwards. Miguel also needs a wake up call and I don’t think Miles will be the one to provide it since I think Miguel needs a completely new perspective to change his mind.
Spot and his actions are entirely driven by emotion, which is true for Miguel as well, but his biggest problem right now is pushing his feelings down. The Spot situation would be a great way to push the more emotionally driven and empathetic side of Miguel to the front. Having Miguel turn from a greater good kind of guy whose willing to sacrifice life if need be, to someone who wants to save one single person who will only make his life harder would be a great way to bring him back towards heroism. Miguel already has a selfless attitude, this would just paint it in a new more admirable light.
Also they’re definitely gonna end off the next movie with the biggest weights on their shoulders, both having quite a bit to repent for (assuming Spot lives to the end lmao). Their guilt could be something to bond over
Outside of that speculation they’ve just generally got a good foundation for a fun character dynamic. The way they approach things is polar opposite, as I mentioned with Spot’s impulsiveness in contrast to the clinical nature in which Miguel handles things. If they were to somehow end up being friends I think they could both learn a lot from each other. I like the idea of their friendship as Spot is a generally polite and kind person while not falling into the “grumpy x sunshine” troupe that I see pretty often with Miguel given he’s still pretty pessimistic and that leaves room for a lot of nuance in their dynamic.
I actually used to make a lot more “shippy” content with them, but as i’ve matured I think i’ve found I prefer getting the idea of their dynamic across more subtly. I like to leave my art up to interpretation! My perspective has changed a ton from age 17 to almost being 20 now so a lot of my older posts are pretty outdated.
Could throw this all out the window if they just kill each other in the next one also lmao we’ll have to see
