TEAMUP 2 CLEANUP MBARE REOPENS THE CHILDREN’S PLAYGROUND On Saturday 27th March, TeamUp 2 CleanUp Mbare held a ceremony to bless and to officially reopen the children’s playground in Mbare. Situated near the Matapi Flats this newly refurbished playground is a testimony to the hard work and dedication shown by the Team, it’s partners and stakeholders. ZimboGreen was honoured to be amongst the invited guests. Speakers gave accounts of the vision behind the playground, the problems encountered along the way and how the community with the assistance of generous partners and stakeholders has come together to reopen the playground. It was stressed repeatedly that it is a playground for all children, irrespective of politics and faith. The goal had been to refurbish and to improve the playground after vandalism and general wear and tear had taken their toll. Mbare is the oldest high density area in Harare and is home to its largest market. The challenges to sustainable waste management posed by the large numbers of people commuting daily into Mbare cannot be overstated. TeamUp 2 CleanUp has therefore had to regularly hold Clean Ups to keep the area clear of waste. What has emerged is an improved, bright, colourful and stimulating space for children to play in. Letters, numbers and cartoon characters decorate the playground equipment which is painted in bright cheerful colours. A colourful sturdy fence now secures the playground and community volunteers will supervise the playground to ensure the safety of the children. Child abductions are on the increase in the area so the residents welcome the creation of a safe haven free from predators and drugs. Hand in hand with refurbishing the playground a recycling Awareness programme was started in several primary schools in Mbare in an effort to teach the children that there is value in waste. Already an increasing number of households in Mbare are reaping the financial rewards from separating their waste. It was a joyous occasion and the guests were entertained by the local talented Ngandanga Music and Dance Group. Scores of children excitedly waited outside for the gates to be opened. #greenspaces #mbare https://www.instagram.com/p/CNCwjjEDDE6/?igshid=1byt1hsgdd7e

As @worldpressphoto wraps up the Masterclass West Africa in Accra, we're still sharing the work of the incredible participants of the Masterclass East Africa held in Nairobi in December. Check out witness.worldpressphoto.org to see this story from Cynthia Matonhodze @cynthiamatonhodze: In Mbare, Zimbabwe’s oldest suburb, there exists a unique intersection of people. The young have little opportunities around them while the old grew up in an environment of hard work, achievement and sport. It is in this environment that Mama Dee tries to mentor young women to have a career in sport. She coaches a team of young street mothers known as Hope of Smile who live along the banks of Mukuvisi River as a community of people who ran away from home, at a young age, because of different circumstances. She also coaches a team of teenage mothers from her community in Mbare known as Mbare Queens. Her desire in coaching these two teams is to create opportunities for the mothers to better their lives and that of their children. @agencynative @female_fotographers #worldpressphoto #everydayafrica #everydayeverywhere #mbare #zimbabwe #everydayzimbabwe
Dio proteggi me e questa mbare loka.
