Ulquiorra looked down at the sheet of paper he was holding, his hands shaking uncharacteristically. His CT scan results had just come back. For the last several weeks, the espada had been having trouble breathing, horrible chest pain, and a chronic cough, sometimes resulting in blood. He'd finally gone to see a doctor, begrudgingly, and the results were far from promising. Positive. The scan had come back positive. He had been diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer and, he realized with a start, he had little over a year to live. He stumbled back into the wall behind him and sank to the floor, his head in his hands. He wouldn't cry, it was bad enough he was going to die of a human disease. No, he wouldn't let himself cry, at least not where anyone could see him.

"I won't let that happen." Her voice was determined as she stood in front of the wounded Orihime, ready to counter any attack coming their way.
