Stay Confident, Stay Strong - The Reaping
When i got to the breakfast table, I sat down with my father to enjoy the breakfast was making us. Usually its the usual, a portion of rice and a couple of vegetables, but today since it's the reaping my mother made something special. "Morning Ash, you feeling ok today?" asked my father. "Yeah, I'm ok. Just a little nervous like everyone else i suppose." I said narrowing my eyes to the table while biting my nails. "Quit that, it'll wear down your teeth." He said smiling. I nodded but continued to bite them. I couldn't help being nervous, it's in my nature. I'm always on edge when it comes to this stuff.
Breakfast was finished and my mom brought it down to the table. "Good morning sweaty." My mother said. "You doing ok today hun?" I stopped biting my nails and looked up at her with a smile. "Yeah I'm doing ok mom. Just a little nervous" I said with a weak smile. She placed down 6 bagels with butter on the table along with some fresh milk. "Mom how did you manage to get all this food? How much grain did you use?" I said astonished. "Well we got a little extra from the neighbors yesterday so i decide to put it to use." She said smiling. "Eat up." I sank my teeth into the delicious bread with butter. It was excellent.Â
I savored every bite and drank down the milk. I looked up at the clock and noticed it was almost time for the reaping, "Hey guys, I'm going to start heading down there.I love you guys." "Ok hun, we love you too." My parents said as i hugged them for the last time before the reaping. That's when i decided to give them both a kiss. I never really kiss them, only on special occasions. I don't like to show emotion. They both smiled at me, "We'll see you after ok." I nodded and walked out the door.
It was a little chilly today, none of us are really used to the cold. I started walking down the the town center. It was about a 10 minute walk from my house and the reaping starts in about 15 minutes. I shifted my gaze from right to left and noticed there wasn't many people out right now. They must be already at the reaping.
After the 10 minute walk i finally reached the town center, i signed in and the peacekeeper pricked my finger to draw my blood. I placed my finger on the spot where it said "Ash B Amaranth." I took a deep breath and stood in line with the other 16 year old's. I noticed the mayor stepping out onstage welcoming us all to the 48th annual Hunger Games. He is never enthusiastic, its the same dull speech he gives every year about the importance of the reaping and how its a great sacrifice. Next our weird-o escort came on stage. Dressed in all purple she illumined the stage. Her long locks we're styled in spikes dyed blue, and she was wearing 6 inch high heels. Over the top capitol people as usual.
"Welcome all, welcome. Happy Hunger Games. I hope you are all ready for another amazing year for the games, this time of the year is just great. I can feel the games spirit in the air here." She said but everyone was definitely not feeling it. "Ok you know the drill, Ladies first." The crowd instantaneously fell silent. She made her way to the reaping bowl and picked out a name, I couldn't quite here the name because the next thing i knew, we had a volunteer. Her name was Joss, i remember her. She lost her girl friend back in the day when she attacked a peacekeeper. I wish I could have known her better to help her through all of that pain.
"Now, for the boys." Her voice echoed throughout the town center. I dropped my gaze to the floor and pulled my hands into my sleeves. That's what I do when I'm nervous. "And......." Please not me, not me. Please. "Ash Amaranth." A sigh came out of my mouth thinking it wasn't me, but then i realized... Ash Amaranth... That's.. Me. I bit my lip and started walking to the stage. No emotion, that's right. I hate showing emotion. I heard my mom screaming in hysteria. Come on mom, calm down please. You are only making this harder. I stood at the top, motionless gazing off in the distance. I know how to shoot, I have good accuracy. I have some sort of chance. I just need to remember to stay confident, and to stay strong.Â
"Your Tributes from District 11." She said. I turned towards Joss as she turned to me and i shook her hand. Neither of us looked at each other in the eye, or at least I didn't. The next thing we knew we we're being rushed into the building. I took a last glimpse into the town, the orchards in the distance, all the mills then the doors shut and my fate was sealed.
