History of Le Mayeur Museum in Sanur, Bali

The historic Le Mayeur Museum is the oldest museum in Bali, Indonesia. The museum is the former residence of Belgian painter Le Mayeur who lived there in the 1950’s. Our correspondent in Bali reports.

Le Mayeur Museum in Sanur, Bali got its name from a Belgium royal who was also a painter, Adrien Jean Le Mayeur de Merpes.

He first came to Bali in 1932, became interested in Balinese culture, and eventually married a Balinese dancer, Ni Pollok (pronounced “Nee Pollok”), who then became the main subject of his paintings.

His residence in Sanur was turned into a museum in 1985 after Ni Pollok passed away.

The museum reflects the traditional Bali style of architecture with a foundation of sea rocks. Its pillars and windows are covered with carvings.

The three main rooms include a living room, family room and the main studio.

The living room is decorated with paintings, tables, and antique carved furniture.

The family room is filled with small European-style paintings.

And the main studio where Le Mayeur painted is full of large-sized paintings.

It was Bahder Djohan, Indonesian Minister of Education and Culture Teaching back in 1957, who had the idea of changing the building into a museum to preserve Le Mayeur’s art.

Le Mayeur died in 1958 at the age of 78 from ear cancer and was buried in Brussels.

After his death, two additional buildings – Bale Bengong and Pecanangan – were built in strategic location to attract more tourists.
