haha, i mean, i think there’s room for comparison obv. musicals abt 18/19th century american politicians and their legacies that utilize contemporary musical styles outside what’s considered more traditional broadway musical music. questions of cultural representation of these figures and to what extent we glorify and soften them are worth tackling i think.
it’s hard to compare think w/o knowing rly anything abt the andrew jackson one but in short, i think hamilton comes from a different place. i don’t think hamilton is perfect and its impact can be a mixed bag! but i think it’s likely worth ppl’s time more so than andrew jackson being a sexy emo rock star?

I'm curious, how is the intimate life of alexander hamilton known to be faulty? I was hoping that was more accurate simply bc of how old it is
Here are some reasons I don’t like it:
-he doesn’t print the whole of all the letters. So he cuts out parts of Angelica’s letters not about Hamilton, or doesn’t print the ones where he’s not mentioned. It gives a certain view of what Angelica is writing that doesn’t really hold up when you see them all.
-He gets dates wrong on letters. Sometimes, it’s inverting an 8 and 9, so you think it’s 1789, when it’s really 1798. Luckily, if those letters are in a collection, we can check on this and find the real date! Biographers do not always do this and, instead, rely on the Intimate Life. Those letters are not always in collections, though, so I’ve had to piece the dates together through other means.
-The whole Philip portrait.
-I think at one point he claims that Eliza never met Ann Mitchell, even though they very much did meet. I think Allan even printed in the Intimate Life a letter that mentions Ann and Eliza being together.
Basically, these are small things that add up and mean you just have to check his work.
