When AmberStar was still alive, he had made a deal with Maxx. After attacking ThunderClan and winning over the territory, they would give part of it (and the warriors of thunderclan that were spared their life) to Maxx's gang only if they worked together to defeat thunderclan.

AmberStar and Maxx had met through SkyHigh, who didn't know his father was aware of their encounters...

SkyHigh hadn't been comfortable with the plan since the very start. None of this war felt quite right for him yet he still played along. Yet, after ShadowClan lost even having a falcon and a whole gang by his clan, his father died, and he had to take over the leadership of the clan... SkyHigh, now SkyStar had set his mind on finishing this meaningless fight between them. After things calmed down, he set another meeting with Maxx.

At first, it was nice. Maxx had always seen great power in SkyStar even though he himself couldn't, so being congratulated over his new leader position and filled with encouraging, though slightly dark words felt good.

But just as SkyStar was about to tell him he'd call peace in the next four clan's Gathering, Maxx said he wanted to attack Thunderclan. He couldn't allow his dead companions to not be revenged. Shadow clan was weak after the war and its losses, but so was Thunderclan. They could work together and give the last blow, and take what AmberStar had promised to both ShadowClan and Maxx's gang.

When he's told "No" repeatedly, Maxx can't understand why SkyStar wants peace. It feels like betrayal. What had always been a strange yet somehow deeper connection than friendship soon turned into the opposite. Maxx's gang would always come first to him. He couldn't prioritize an outsider who couldn't give them what was due. He'd risked his gang and missed members over this agreement, only for SkyStar to back off and leave them empty handed?

If SkyStar was not gonna give them what was due, it was gonna be taken from him. In trying to avoid a war, SkyStar caused another one to come to his clan.

SkyStar tells all of it to SilentSong (pucci) who is both the clan's medicine cat and the leader's adviser. SilentSong had been in good terms with Sports Maxx. He had been there during all agreements between Maxx and AmberStar, being the only reason both could negotiate in peace.

Unknown to anyone, SilentSong decided to play a role. He met Sports Maxx and brought GreenPaw (Verdena) with him. Greenpaw, still a small kitten. who carried a very beautiful, very deadly bunch Lilies. But their danger wasn't common knowledge to most cats that weren't healers. On top of it, her daughter was blessed with many strange powers unknown to these outsiders, being one of them inmunity to any kind of poison.

So even though Maxx didn't fully trust the medicine cat when he was told SilentSong was leaving the clan and didn't agree with SkyStar's new policy, and thus was going to give him valuable information to attack, he couldn't have suspected the danger behind an innocent gift from a kit. Maxx himself had given flowers to SilentSong multiple times.

SilentSong didn't have any reasons to be in ShadowClan anymore. AmberStar was dead and his siblings had left the clan long ago. So he told Maxx that ShadowClan would be vulnerable during the Four Clan's Gathering, during which there would be less warriors guarding the Shadowclan's camp because they would be in the gathering place. The only price SilentSong asked for that information was to not hurt Amberstar's sons, or his siblings if he ever crossed them around during the attack.

Maxx didn't fully believe it, but it made sense.

SilentSong didn't need Maxx to buy the lie (altough the only lie was him leaving the clan). He just needed him to take the innocent gift. Just having the flower in his mouthbwas enough. In one day he'd be coughing blood and another one and he'd die.
