Okay, so. I just played the Baroness Elsa in a small production of Sound of Music and I had some thoughts about her. This is not based on anything in canon really, but I wanted to get it down.
I see Elsa as being aro-spec? Like, she was after Captain Von Trapp because she thought they would make a good match based on money and social standing, but she never really loved him
She wanted a husband because it was the Thing to Do for women of her age and in that time, and she thought it would be nice to have a companion
Losing the captain to Maria hurt a little, but only because she thought he was being stupid about going after someone of such low standing
Her "romance" with Max, such as it is, is again based on a want of companionship. Max isn't nearly as good of a match for her society-wise, but he's a funny little man. He makes her laugh, and is intelligent, and has a good heart underneath all of his crooked veneer, and so she doesn't mind keeping him around
