above Max Corbacho
I’d love to take a tour of his studio and ask him questions about gear, creative process and philosophy.
The genre cluster of electronic ambient, space music, electronic drone, ethereal soundscapes, etc., awaits a decent writing of its history (as far as I know, which isn’t always much).
A podcast idea: Interviews with these composers interspersed with excerpts from their work.
Contemplative poets of inner space and travelers in outer mystery, there seem to be more and more musicians working in these forms of music. And despite the seemingly small number of “formal” principles employed in the genre, like long sustained synth pads and reverb and phasing effects, the novelty and diversity of moods that are able to be created is immense. The aesthetic reach of space music is as limitless as the universe (like creativity itself).
There were historical points where the novel sounds of electronic instruments sounded unusual and alien, as I suppose any new creative irruption might create a ‘shock of the new’. But all that was happening was that we were given the tools to reveal ourselves to ourselves. Strange and alien sounds begin as an out there and wind up being an in here - a part of us. We discover the alien other or sensibility and then become it.
