Kiera and Catalina made fun of Varian's goatee so he shaved it off an grew a moustache instead. Hence why BatB Maurice has a moustache and not a goatee.

So I know that Maurice!Varian is a joke, but that ask gave me thoughts. You know in BATB when Maurice rushes into the tavern to try and get help after Belle is taken by the Beast and Gaston's cronies through him out into the snow? Well, imagine the bad flashbacks/panic that could trigger. It's just like when the Corona guards tossed him out into the blizzard when he went to get Rapunzel's help for his father.
