White Seahorse
By Matty Smith, Sydney, Australia
Ocean Photographer of the Year
Great White Split: Category Runner Up and British Underwater Photographer of the Year 2022, Portrait. I
had wanted to shoot a charismatic over/under portrait of a great white shark for a couple of years. Some techniques I had previously tried failed terribly, so this time I designed and constructed my own carbon pole and remote trigger. This enabled me to safely lower my camera and housing into the water with my own 12-inch split-shot dome port attached. Surprisingly the sharks were instantly attracted to the camera with no extra bait needed. In fact, it was a battle to stop them biting the dome port! Photographed off Australia's North Neptune Islands. # (© Matty Smith / UPY2022)
Moments before this frame, three male giant cuttlefish (Sepia apama) were trying to court a female. A fight ensued between two males and they inked the water as they grappled and rolled out of frame. The female bolted and this male was left in the aftermath, still displaying his vivid courting colours. Whyalla, South Australia.

“Two Great White Sharks cruising over seagrass beds”
“The conditions were perfect on this day at South Neptune Island. We had a dozen sharks swimming under the MV Rodney Fox with a visibility of 30m+. The weather was calm and sunny, and the ocean was mirror-like. Using a slow shutter, full power strobes, and a panning technique, I was able to freeze the movement of the closest shark whilst portraying the gentle movement and atmosphere of the scene in the seagrass.”
