I just researched the accident scene. First,why would two vehicles going in opposite direction be traveling on a one lane road? Next,when the lorry driver rushes to the side of the road and we see a presumably dead Matthew (if you have read Patient 9 - Matthew Crawley on FamFiction.net, you know he is not), it is clear the car didn’t dive off a cliff. Looks more like a natural ditch with some brush and rocks. Why would the car turn over? Why would tire come off? Why would Matthew have been crushed? The aftermath of Fellowes’ accident does not jive with the accident, itself.
The car would have stopped once it hit something. What would that be? I did not see any trees.
The entire scene was done badly, which was fine by me, because I was able to resurrect my favorite character in a plausible way.
Whether Dan Stevens wanted to leave or not, there were other scenarios that Fellowes could have employed to keep the character alive.
Instead, he gave his audience botched accident and heartache on Christmas.
