There has been a long standing fascination among western occultists with various facets of eastern mysticism. Our vantage point from the post Platonic/Abrahamic early 21st century still leaves us with a shrouded and mysterious vision of the cultural norms of Hindi and Tibetan peoples. Tantra has, beyond all other niches and paths of the east, attracted the attention of occultists and mundanes alike. Often ill perceived as merely a number of complicated sexual positions, tantra has been mainstreamed for decades here in the west.
Yet despite the glossy coverage of this thing called tantra it is rare to see an approach to tantric ideas and practices that examines the roots of tantra with the respect and fear that it deserves.
In their recent publication "Ferocious" from Theion Publishing "the Sepulcher Society", whose previous volume on necromantic practices "Underworld" we covered, delve deep into the practicalities of the Matrika Cult, laying out a straight forward and practical text that guides the reader through the everyday practice of these seven fearsome Tantric Goddesses.
The Sapta Matrika are a marginal cult within both Hindu and Buddhist Tantra. They appear to have evolved historically from regional goddesses into a cult of sister goddesses that have come to represent a kind of "seven deadly sins" pantheon.
One of the appeals of the Matrika Cult is that although it is known as a lineage initiatory cult it has a centuries old tradition of self initiation, providing a path for those not born into families associated with the cult to practice respectfully.
The text opens with a well researched introduction to the Matrika, with contemporary cultural explanations and a concise exploration of the daily ritual practices associated with these goddess-demons. After making clear that the nature of these beings is not as simple as black and white ideas of good and evil the text then goes into a series of seven chapters, each outlining the various practices, offerings, benedictions and prayers associated with each Matrika. Finally the text rounds out with more commentary giving some content to the cult in modern society and warning that although these demon goddesses manifest individually they are in fact aspects of a larger tradition.
Ferocious takes great effort to outline the importance of the mantras associated with each Matrika, Giving the words written phonetically and aimed at English speaking conventions. The mantra is an often overlooked and extremely important part of tantric practice, used to control breathing and to give a vibratory shape to the ideoform that is being focused upon.
While mountains of works have been written about tantra few have approached the rituals of everyday practitioners, let alone brought light to these demon goddesses who have so long existed in the shadow of cross cultural tantric practice.
The one avenue of inquiry I was hoping that the book would explore, though it does not, is the association of the Sapta Matrika with the brewing of the sacred "soma" that was consumed by the gods as a mind expanding nectar. The Matrika as a parable for the seven ingredients or stages of the making of soma is something that has yet to be explored from a practical angle, something I hope will be addressed in future publications.
Ferocious is a valuable text for both the curious and the cultist, a fine introduction to developing a ritual practice around a venerable group of powerful entities whose worship goes back to the writings of the Vedas and continues even until today.
The book itself is easily the most beautiful production that Theion has had in a standard issue design. The deep red satin cover is embossed in a gold design on front, spine and back. The endpapers are of a rich metallic gold paper and the volume is extensively illustrated throughout with both photographs and illustrations of the goddesses many aspects.
A fine addition to one's library, be they curious reader or serious student of the occult.
