🚀🕊❤🌌 #ArtIsAWeapon #BlackHistoryMonth #HiddenNoMore Peaceful journeys to the extraordinary #mathmetician #KatherineJohnson, who transitioned yesterday (2.23.2020) at the age of 101. The brilliant Mrs. Johnson, one of @NASA’s human “computers” and an unsung hero of the space agency’s early days, was one of the Black women profiled in the book and the 2016 Academy Award-nominated film @hiddenfiguresmovie. • • Mrs. Johnson was part of NASA’s “Computer Pool,” a group of mathematicians whose data powered NASA’s first successful space missions. She did calculations for the first moon landing, and later for the space shuttle program. The group’s success largely hinged on the accomplishments of its Black women members. • • In 2015, President @BarackObama awarded her the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. ‘In her 33 years at NASA, Katherine was a pioneer who broke the barriers of race and gender, showing generations of young people that everyone can excel in math and science, and reach for the stars,’ said Pres. Obama. • • Her accomplishments continued to be highlighted later in life. She got a standing ovation at the Academy Awards in 2017 and NASA named its Computational Research Facility in her honor. (Sources: @npr and @cnn.) ____________________ @TarajiPHenson, who portrayed the STEM pioneer in “Hidden Figures," payed tribute via @instagram: Thank you QUEEN #KatherineJohnso for sharing your intelligence, poise, grace and beauty with the world! Because of your hard work little girls EVERYWHERE can dream as big as the MOON!!! Your legacy will live on FORVER AND EVER!!! You ran so we could fly!!! I will forever be honored to have been apart of bringing your story to life.” ___________________

Benjamin Banneker was born on November 9, 1731, in Ellicott's Mills, Maryland. A free black man who owned a farm near Baltimore, Banneker was largely self-educated in astronomy and mathematics. He was later called upon to assist in the surveying of territory for the construction of the nation's capital. He also became an active writer of almanacs and exchanged letters with Thomas Jefferson, politely challenging him to do what he could to ensure racial equality. Banneker died on October 9, 1806. #marylandhistory #astronomer #exceptionalmen #mathmetician #scientist #inventor #ushistory (at Ellicott's Mills Historic District)

The ever dreaded Al-Gebra
Alan Turing June 23, 1912 – June 7, 1954
I’m afraid that the following syllogism may be used by some in the future. Turing believes machines think Turing lies with men Therefore machines do not think Yours in distress, ~Alan
I’ve now got myself into the kind of trouble that I have always considered to be quite a possibility for me, though I have usually rated it at about 10:1 against. I shall shortly be pleading guilty to a charge of sexual offences with a young man. The story of how it all came to be found out is a long and fascinating one, which I shall have to make into a short story one day, but haven’t the time to tell you now. No doubt I shall emerge from it all a different man, but quite who I’ve not found out. ~ Alan
