          IT  WAS  NOT  confusion  which  sparked  from  the  risen  tone  of  her  voice,  but  incredulity.  the  words  scrawled  upon  the  parchment  were  all  but  gibberish  to  her  and  left  no  compelling  notion  to  investigate  further.

          “Do you... get sent on sorties?”

     The little fox kicks and swings his legs, watching the other tantou tend the small herb patch. He hasn’t been sent on his own – his master says soon, very soon – but the excitement of being sent on a mission’s put the new toudan... on edge.

          “... it’s nothing.”

     The gash in his arm isn’t entirely minor — red gushes forth, stains the pristine white of his sleeve, yet somehow his expression hardly changes. Tomoegata appears more annoyed, truly, than in pain; nothing more than a minor interruption, dragging him away from so many other responsibilities he could be occupied with at the moment...

          “HE CONTRIBUTED  to my shrine, once.”.

     No lead up to such an odd declaration; Kusanagi stares idly into his drink, watching the murky liquid swirl and distort the reflection within it, until the world seems to come back to him all at once, and his attention is snapped back to the present moment.

          “As long as it doesn’t compromise our mission.”

     Idle time is almost always to be expected on these kinds of missions;      when  their  master  can’t  so  accurately  predict  the  arrival  of  their      enemies,   it’s much better to wait than arrive too late.  Still, he wasn’t     expecting much conversation from Yagen,   not that he’s complaining     about the distraction.   He cants his head,   watching the  tantou from     his perch in the corner, and mulls his words carefully.

          “You can believe in  whatever you want,   really  —  I don’t have a     problem  as  long  as  our  current   master  takes  precedence.   You     probably already figure that, though...”
