#FreePiston6: 6 Jeepney Drivers & piston members jailed on June 2. Please help!
Now, the idea of the Philippine Jeepney ‘Dyipni’ might be foreign to you but they prove to be an essential form of transport for the Filipino. After WW2, Filipinos repurposed the Jeepneys used in war to be forms of transport we use today.
(Here is a sample of a Jeepney from wikipedia) Jeepneys are essential to us. They are cheaper than other forms of transport and many Filipinos use them are their mode of transport. Although, the Department of Transport has already talked about the banning of Old Jeepneys that did not meet their criteria back in 2019 to be implemented in July 1, 2020, the setting now is very different as we face the pandemic and many of the Jeepney drivers haven’t the time to get ready for the phase out as we have been stuck in Quarantine for months now. It is noteworthy to mention that the Philippine transport system has been a big mess as too many people are in need of transport but the transport allowed into operation is just too little. This only pushes for further need for the Kings of the Raod to serve the people yet again.
