My feeling always was, an an actor - and especially as one of the straight actors on the show, that, to a degree, it was my job to do my lines the way they were written and mind my fucking business because our executive producers and many of our writers were gay and were creating these scripts and lines to tell their stories. What, I’m gonna come in and say, 'well I don’t think my character would do that'?. It’s like, seriously? Fuck off. Let's just say there was a little bit of, um, pushback with some of the other actors on the show. [Aj note: I bet this is reference to Randy pushing back as a queer man about Justin’s ridiculous storylines.]

The gay ones or the straight ones?

Um, one of each, actually. There ended up being a lot of negativity in kind of just trying to get loving storylines done and it was a tall order.

Thank you so much! This is actually the fic I targeted for Finish It Fest so the more hyped I can be the better. The premise is based very loosely off of Escape (The Pina Colada song). (Like so loose I’m no longer sure how I associate them) We get present day Patrick and David but also flashbacks to their younger years in SC, including a separation at their HS graduation and how they ultimately find their way back to each other.

Flashback Snippet 🍁

“So,” David begins, shoulder to shoulder with Patrick while they lay in the Rose’s backyard, staring up at the afternoon sky. Well, laying on a wide blanket to make sure David’s clothes don’t get ruined by the grass.

Patrick turns to face him, a hand over his eyes to shield the sun. “So?”

David fidgets with his fingers, keeping his sunglasses-clad gaze fixed on the clouds as he speaks. “The Fall Harvest dance is coming up.”

Patrick waits for him to continue, but that seems to be all David is going to offer. “Yeah, it is. I knew that. You just gonna spout facts or was there more to that?”

“Ass,” David prods back, lightly poking Patrick’s side. “Were you… going with anyone?”

“I haven’t asked anyone, if that’s what you mean. Are you?”

“No.”

David remains unusually quiet, so Patrick pushes a little further. “Were you hoping to go with someone?”

Patrick catalogs the flicker of - sadness, perhaps? - that crosses his best friend’s face. It seems to disappear as quickly as it arrives.

“Umm, not really.” David seems to be aiming for nonchalant. “Group activities aren’t really my thing. You know that.”

“Yeah, I do.” Patrick huffs a little laugh, trying not to focus too hard on what David’s face is, or isn’t, doing. “Hey, well maybe all of us could go together. You know, the guys. Nothing wrong with that, right?”

“What about Rachel?”

“What about her?” The question comes out a little too exasperated for Patrick’s liking.

“She seems awfully interested in you. Maybe she wants to go with you.”

Patrick sits up, hugging his knees to his chest. “God, what is it with everyone? Is there something in the damn water lately?”

David slides his sunglasses down his nose, eyes filled with concern. “What do you mean? I didn’t- I didn’t mean anything by it. I just thought-”

“Yeah, I know, David. It’s just…” Patrick scrubs a hand through his hair. “Andy’s always talking about how Rachel’s into me, and how I should ask her out. I’m just not into that right now. If he wants he should ask her out!”

“Oh,” David speaks quietly. “I’m sorry, Patrick. Like I said I, um, didn’t mean anything by it. I just thought…”

“No, it’s okay. I get it.” Patrick can’t expect David to know, even if they’re closer than most best friends.

David sits up then, mirroring Patrick, and resting one hand on his forearm. His voice is low and soothing like a balm when he finally speaks. “It doesn’t have to just be okay, Patrick. If you don’t wanna go with her - or anyone - you don’t have to. You don’t even have to go if you don’t want. You’re the only one who gets to decide that.”

Patrick gives David what he hopes is a smile. Sometimes he’s still overwhelmed that their friendship exists. That this is the same boy who strode into junior high the year before, refusing to even acknowledge Patrick’s existence. “Thank you, David.”

“Anytime, Patrick.” David squeezes his arm, but doesn’t remove his hand. Patrick doesn’t want him to. It burns and calms him simultaneously. Like he should want to pull away, but thinks that might feel worse. The weight of David’s palm against his skin is an anchor, nothing like when Rachel tries to touch him.

They sit together, in comfortable silence, on the blanket. David’s thumb idly brushes back and forth through the faint hairs on Patrick’s forearm. The sun starts to set, infusing the clouds with pink and orange hues. When Adelina calls them in for supper, and they finally separate, Patrick wonders why the absence feels so heavy. Why he feels simultaneously empty and like he’s been branded with an irrefutable mark. It’s not like they’ve never touched before. This time is different somehow. Patrick felt really… seen. He opened up to David about something everyone else expects him to want, and wasn’t made to feel bad, or weird, about it. Just accepted.
