 During circa 16 years [time Katherine lived in San Francisco with Sofia], she never spoke about her family, not even to her own daughter. For her Stefan was dead and her proud didn’t allow her to contact her family for help to raise her daughter, so she did it all by herself.

 4 years ago [time she came to the Southamptons], was the first time she ever said to Sofia that she had a sister and found out her sister was married, had a daughter already and with baby steps Katherine & Mary started building their relationship again, while Sofia constructed her own relationship with the rest of the family.

 During these 4 years, Stefan was dead for all of them, but only Katherine knew his name, his face and how he died. The only thing Sofia & the Collins knew was that Sofia’s father died before the girl was born. Stefan was always a private subject that Katherine kept to herself.

 A few months ago, Stefan returned ‘from the dead’ and came to the Southamptons. He found Katherine & Sofia.

 Now, Katherine still has a hard time speaking about him, specially after the fight with Sofia, when Sofia left the Blye’s manor for weeks. Sofia herself always had some difficulties accepting this man who her mother and he himself said he was her father, for her, he was the ‘undead’ guy or simply ‘undead’/not-so-dead.

 Sure, you can assume and do well that Katherine and Sofia already spoke with Mary & David about this man, but neither of them pronounced his name. Katherine referred to “Sofia’s father” and Sofia to ” ‘undead’ guy”.

 There was one time that Sofia slipped and let it pass his name to David, but not to Mary.
