Sleeping on top of a erupting volcano is one hell of an adventure. I was stranded for four days in cyclonic winds and extreme weather - it pushed me to my limits. A tropical storm at 1250 meters in a tent is a crazy experience. Marum volcano, Vanuatu is one of the most active lava lakes on the planet, and its my job to climb inside it. I’m a extreme volcano guide from the United Kingdom who climbs inside some of the worlds most dangerous volcanoes, using my expeditions to gather scientific data, videos and photos to share with the world.
Vanuatu volcanoes
This gorgeously clear photo from the Advanced Land Imager on NASA’s EO-1 satellite shows the eastern 2/3 of the island of Ambrym in the nation of Vanuatu, Western Pacific Ocean.
The island hosts a volcano also known as Ambrym, 2 active craters of which can be seen here. The craters are emitting plumes of steam and sulfur dioxide which are drifting east due to the prevailing winds. The western crater is known as Benbow, the eastern crater is known as Marum. At high magnification (or by clicking the link at the bottom) an active lava lake can be observed within one of the smaller craters inside the larger Marum crater.
