Martingales & Breastplates

Standing Martingale

Keep horse from raising head to high (2).

Some horses learn to lean on them though (2).

Much more restrictive than standing martingale (2).

Do not use with a drop, flash, or figure 8 noseband (3).

Running Martingale

Used to keep a horse from raising their head above the bit (1)

It uses leverage to encourage a horse to bring their head down (1)

Unlike a standing martingale, allows rider to give horse their head should the stumble or need full use of their head (1)

Make sure you use rein stops to keep the martingale from getting caught in the bit (1)

Good for strong and/or green horses

Doesn’t encourage a horse to lean on them like a standing martingale (2)

Make sure it’s adjusted properly. Too loose and it’s useless. Too tight and there is constant pressure on the bars of the mouth

When properly adjusted, the running martingale should not be applying pressure when the horse’s head is in the right position (3).
