"How much longer till we get to Adventure City?" Zuma asked, looking out towards the horizon to try to spot land.

"Not much longer," Ryder replied as he steered the Aircraft Carrier.

Marshall stared out the window alongside Zuma as he thought back to the last time they'd been to Adventure City. A giant meteor destroyed the pup tower and gave them superpower-granting crystals. The craziest part was that it wasn't even the first time they got superpowers from a meteor.

He wondered just how many superpowered meteors were out there. And how they worked. And why each of them were given a different superpower when they all came from the same source. He had a lot of questions about the meteors, but the same could probably be said for the rest of his team. After all, they had returned to Adventure Bay with the express purpose of getting their other meteor so they could compare the two.

The two meteors were currently sitting in Ryder's scanning device below deck, gathering data to show to Professor Wilson at the university. Hopefully, she could help them learn more about the meteors and how their powers worked.

"We're here!" Ryder declared, pulling Marshall from his thoughts. They'd arrived at the Adventure City pier, and the team wasted no time deploying their vehicles and making their way to the university where Professor Wilson was waiting.

"Ryder! Pups!" The professor greeted them excitedly. It was clear she had been looking forward to this for a while. "Everything is set up in the labs. I just need to put your compositional and energy signature scans into the computer, and then we can get started."

The pups all howled in excitement. As much as Ryder preached about only using their powers responsibly, they did still enjoy playing around with them, and what was testing if not just playing around with something to see what happens? While Ryder and Professor Wilson looked over the data on the computer, the pups got into their Mighty Pups suits and powered up.

“Okay,” Professor Wilson declared. “Let’s see what those powers of yours can do!”

One by one, each of the pups tested their abilities, both the ones from the crystals and from the first meteor. Professor Wilson was very intrigued by how most of the pups got different powers depending on which meteor they were using, with Chase seemingly being the only exception.

“Fascinating,” she hummed, looking between her notes and the data on the computer. “The two meteors have very slight differences in composition and in the energy they produce. I wonder if the two are compatible?”

“Trying to combine the energy of the two meteors would be too dangerous,” Ryder said. “We don’t know how it would interact. Maybe we can test it later in a more controlled environment, but let’s try to get a better understanding of what we’re working with before we do anything experimental.”

“Good point. Let’s get a closer look at how the energy interacts with your gear. Pups, could you get your vehicles, please?”

The group moved to an outdoor testing area where they continued to demonstrate their powers. Marshall went first, lining up his mighty truck with a row of targets and shooting them with the truck’s fireball cannons. Professor Wilson adjusted her glasses as she watched the targets burn, taking notes on a clipboard.

“Interesting. The fire itself doesn’t seem to have any unusual properties, but just the fact that you can produce giant balls of fire is very impressive. Ryder, tell me more about the mechanics of the vehicles. How exactly do they work?”

“Well, the steering wheels absorb residual energy from their paws and store it in these containers I incorporated into the engine.” Ryder pulled up a blueprint of the vehicle’s engine with the containers highlighted. “The energy can act as both a secondary power source for the vehicle itself or can be ‘activated’ via carefully controlled electrochemical signals so they can use their powers through the vehicles.”

“I see. And how do you make sure the energy produces the superpower you want it to?”

Ryder paused. “I... actually never thought of that. Whenever a pup puts their energy into a vehicle, the power the energy produced is always just aligned with the power they have. But you’re right, it’s all the same energy, so what exactly decides how the energy is expressed?”

“Well, it’s questions like that that we’re here to find the answers to. Let’s see… How about we try having one of the pups operate a vehicle that isn’t theirs and see what happens. I also want to analyze a sample of the stored energy to see if the containment process might be changing it in some way.”

“Alright. Zuma, see if you can use your powers with Marshall’s vehicle.”

Zuma nodded and swapped places with Marshall, climbing into the driver’s seat with an excited grin. “Let’s see what this baby can do with the water pup at the wheel.”

He powered up the truck and aimed the cannons at another target. But when he fired, they shot out balls of water rather than fire.

“Now that’s interesting,” Professor Wilson said with a smile. “So, what power the energy creates is directly tied to the pup the energy came from. I wonder if the energy getting absorbed into the body does something to it. I’m also curious what would happen if we took energy directly from the crystals and put it into the vehicles.”

Zuma giggled. “Well, I’m glad you think it’s cool, cause my power is pretty much useless here. I’m just doing the same thing a normal firetruck does.”

While the other pups laughed along with Zuma, Marshall seemed to become lost in thought, his eyes wandering between his truck and the burnt remains of the targets he shot at earlier. Ryder noticed this and approached the thoughtful Dalmatian.

“Hey Marshall, what’s on your mind?”

Marshall turned to Ryder in surprise, having been too lost in thought to notice the boy walking up to him. He fidgeted with his pup-tag as he tried to organize his thoughts.

“My mighty power is kinda… weird when you really think about it. I mean, yeah, I’m a fire pup, but my job is to put out fires. Why would I get the power to create it? And Chase’s is kinda weird too. Yeah, his name is Chase, but what does being a police pup have to do with going fast?”

Ryder nodded. “Yeah, your power is pretty ironic, but I don’t think any of the powers have anything to do with your jobs. When we first got the crystals, Chase theorized that the crystals amplify something about you, and I think he’s right. Your powers are a reflection of who you are. Chase is a natural leader, always ready to leap into action and lead the way for everyone else. And you, you’re one of the warmest and friendliest pups I know, and you’re also very passionate about your job. I mean, you always say you’re fired up after all.”

Marshall giggled. “I guess you do have a point there. Though, if I’m being honest, I kinda wish I had a different power. Fire isn’t all that helpful in a rescue, and I’m a little worried that I might hurt someone with it.”

Ryder reached down and ruffled the fur on Marshall’s head. “Don’t cut yourself short. You’re a smart pup, and I’m sure you’ll find ways to make good use of your power, and I know you’d never hurt anyone.”

#3 - Adventure City HQ Tumble

I think this would technically count as Marshall's very first wipeout in Adventure City? He and the other pups hadn't arrived at the city around the time he wiped out in the PAW Patroller, so I think it counts.

I included this because I think the scene in itself is pretty silly, and I don't think I've gotten over the way Marshall jumps away from the hologram like a cat getting jumpscared by the sudden appearance of a cucumber. I literally got that screenshot JUST right, and I'm still laughing at it. I love this silly boy so much.

#2 - Humdinger Fireworks Debacle and Civilian Rescue - PAW Patrol: The Movie

This was part of the PAW Patrol's very first rescue in Adventure City, making it pretty significant on its own! I wanted to take the time to highlight Marshall's efforts in particular here, though, especially the work he put in to rescue the fire-stranded civilians / city residents (and Chase) when they were trapped by the post-firework blaze. He did a superb job here, working alongside Rocky and Chase (pre-rescue) to get the fireworks' flames under control in the initial call to action before assisting with the second call (Chase in peril).

An incredible job well done from the resident fire pup!

#1 - Suit-Up Sequence - PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie

THE GOOSEBUMPS I GET WHILE WATCHING THIS SCENE ARE ACTUALLY INSANE. Just in general, all of the different sequences with the pups getting suited up were super well done! But oh my goodness, Marshall's suit-up? Absolute cinema. Peak stuff right there.

The repugnant odor of smoke and charred Earth permeated Marshall’s lungs as he stared on at the exponentially growing conflagration before him, almost as if hypnotized by the deathly red-orange glow that encompassed what had once been a flourishing forest, now reduced to nothing but ash and scorched soil.

He could almost whistle appreciatively at it, impressed with the wildfire’s sheer size and speed at which it consumed the trees and other greenery that dared to oppose its wrath. All the animals that once inhabited the decaying forest had been promptly relocated to another one thanks to the PAW Patrol’s efforts, and all that was left to do now was contain the flames that threatened to burn down more forests should they fail to extinguish it properly in time.

He hadn’t dealt with a fire this big in forever. His paws tingled with a thrilling excitement, a bark just lingering at the back of his throat ready to summon his water cannons, his tail wagging at a remarkable pace. Finally, finally, he could live up to his firefighter title once more.

The Dalmatian released a commanding bark, his water cannons whirring to life behind him. He smirked confidently. With the help of the PAW Patrol, he knew this wildfire would be put out before it could truly go out of control. There was really nothing to worry about, not even in the wasteland of ash and smog that would be the inevitable aftermath, a seemingly inhospitable climate.

Water launched powerfully from gleaming red cannons. “I’m fired up!”

Marshall wasn’t worried about the future of the forest, far from it. He knew that eventually the grass would return, the trees would grow anew and the wildlife would continue to thrive in the emergence of a brand new forest.

“Marshall! Where are you?” Ryder called out. It’d been a few hours since he’d last seen Marshall, and he wasn’t answering his pup-tag, which, given the day’s events, made him worried. He’d searched all over the Lookout and the yard, but Marshall was nowhere in sight.

“Come on, Marshall, where are you?” He muttered to himself, fidgeting with his fingers nervously. He finally decided to use the tracker on his pup-pad, which said he was in his pup-house. But that didn’t make any sense. He’d already looked there. It had been one of the first places he checked.

Still, he went back outside to check again. Maybe Marshall was just out in town with a broken pup-tag communicator, and now he was back, resting in his pup-house and none the wiser to Ryder’s worry.

No such luck, Marshall wasn’t there. But then why did the tracker tell him otherwise? He decided to take a closer look inside Marshall’s pup-house, and what he saw made his stomach drop.

Marshall’s collar. Lying on his pup-bed with a note tied to it.

“Oh no…” He carefully took the note and read it, despite already knowing what was on it.

“I quit. Hope you find a better fire pup. (shouldn’t be hard)”

He sighed, crumbled up the note, and grabbed Marshall’s collar. At least now he had a good idea of where his pup was…

It was a short drive, shorter than it should’ve been, considering he was speeding, but he couldn’t care less about that. Marshall needed him. His ATV skidded to a stop when he reached the park, and he didn’t bother taking off his helmet as he ran, ignoring the worried looks of the people around him. They probably thought he was on a mission. And he was, just not the kind they were assuming.

He ran into a forest, along a nonexistent trail that he knew by heart at this point. One he’d traveled many times before, both alone and with his pups. Finally, after what felt like ages but what must’ve been no more than a few minutes, He came to his destination: A large tree, with moss growing along its roots and showing its age. And sitting in the tree’s shade was the pup he was looking for, though he didn’t look too happy to see him.

“What are you doing here?” Marshall asked.

“I came to bring you home.”

“Then you didn’t read the note.”

“I did. I also know exactly why you wrote it, and why you’re doing this. And it’s not true.”

“Isn’t it?” Tears began to well up in Marshall’s eyes. “I’m always tripping over my own paws and messing things up. I never should’ve been a fire pup or a part of the Paw Patrol. You’ll all be better off without me.”

Ryder sighed. “Marshall, you know that’s not true. You’re a great fire pup and are more than worthy of being on the Paw Patrol. Plus, we’d all miss you.”

“Would you? I’m sure the other pups would be relieved to not have to deal with my wipeouts anymore.”

Ryder sat down next to Marshall, who turned away from him. “You remember the last time you did this, right? When you ‘took a break’? The others said the elevator ride felt empty without you. We spent all day looking for you, you know. This was actually the first place I looked.”

“Then why aren’t they here now?”

“Because I haven’t told them. I was hoping I could bring you back before they found out. I know they’re all gonna be devastated when they hear you want to quit.”

Marshall was silent for a moment. “… They’ll understand, once they see what a real fire pup is supposed to be.”

“That’s ridiculous. How are you not a real fire pup?”

“Isn’t it obvious? I’m uncoordinated, unfocused, un-”

“You know that other pup was just jealous, right?”

Marshall looked up at Ryder in confusion. “Jealous? Why would he be jealous of me?”

It was Ryder’s turn to look away. “Because… He wanted to join the Paw Patrol. I didn’t want to tell you because I worried you would think you were being replaced or that you weren’t good enough. His name was Flint, and he approached me the other day asking if he could join as a fire pup. I told him that we didn’t need another fire pup, but he was insistent. I mean, he was practically begging me to let him join, and I was actually starting to consider it, figured there’d be no harm in having two fire pups, but then that fire happened. You didn’t forget your spare fire extinguisher. He took it while you were busy putting out the fire. He was trying to prove himself to me.”

Marshall gave a baffled look. “Did he seriously think a fire extinguisher was gonna do anything with a fire that big?”

“That’s what I said, but again, he was insistent on helping. He ran right into the building to try to help people evacuate, and you saw how well that went.”

“I thought his injuries were oddly mild for how long the fire had been going. I figured he just got lucky.”

“After you made sure he was okay and went back to fighting the fire, I told him I couldn’t have a fire pup that was that reckless and unwilling to listen. He didn’t take it very well, and he took it out on you.” Ryder wrapped an arm around Marshall. “I’m sorry I let it get to that point, Marshall. I should’ve handled it better and put my foot down from the start. You’re the only fire pup the Paw Patrol needs.”

Marshall smiled. “It’s not your fault, Ryder. Pups like that are… Well, they’re not exactly the brightest.”

Ryder giggled. “Yeah, I kinda have to agree, he was too stubborn for his own good. And he’s a liar. None of what he said about you was true.”

“Thanks, Ryder, and thanks for telling me about all this. I understand why you didn’t want to at first.”

Ryder gave Marshall a tight hug. “There’s no fire pup I’d rather have than you. If you ask me, even if Flint had joined the team, he always would’ve been second best.”

“Wow, that’s a little harsh, don’t you think?”

“After what he did today? No.”

Marshall let out a laugh. “Come on, let’s go home.”

Yes yes I’m incredibly biased, but I’m biased and happy.

ARG I JUST LOVED THE SHORT BETWEEN THEM!! She was just so giddy as Marshall was showing off his equipment and stopping the fire, and even offered to help him [ Like the wonderful princess she is ].

They’re both so stupid and wonderful I genuinely think that they would have gotten along SO well if they were given the chance 🥹

Honorable Mention - Ambulance (Original)!

Honestly, how could I not mention this one? This was the first alternate/additional vehicles of the series, debuting alongside Chase's spy truck in season two!

That, and EMT Marshall debuted along with the ambulance! I'm a bit of a sucker for EMT Marshall as of right now, all because of something PAW Patrol-related that I've been working on for about a year or so. EMT Marshall my goat, they could never make me hate you.

#3 - Big Truck Pups Fire Truck!

So, I may or may not have an unironic bias towards the Big Truck Pups subseries, but I swear that isn't why this vehicle was amongst my top three. I genuinely love the way his big rig was designed, it's an absolute unit that does a pretty good job of combining fire truck and big truck aspects in a way that allows it to not only look good, but function well, too! Big truck fire truck go brrr.

#2 - Mighty Fire Truck!

Ok now, this one... In my eyes, it is a bit goofy-looking, but I mean that in a positive way. The mighty fire truck is pretty awesome, especially with the fire cannons deployed! In my humble opinion, I think the fire cannons have got to be the coolest function/feature of the truck, and I think that makes up for the fact that it typically looks a little squished with how the front and back are sort of slanted. Got a sliiight dent in the back (/j /ref).

#1 - Adventure City Fire Truck!

THIS BAD BOY RIGHT HERE!! THIS BEAST!! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!! I think I actually flipped out seeing it when I first watched the PAW Patrol Movie last year, because... Well, LOOK AT IT!! This thing is BEAUTIFUL, especially with the water cannon deployed!

Badass. Absolutely badass. You will not catch me speaking ill of this truck, it's truly amazing.
