Simon had always been connected to nature. His family had instilled that into him since he was a child. His family owned the little cottage out in the woods where they would go vacation during the summer. As a kid, he never got bored while traversing through the heavy foliage, and would spend hours upon hours climbing the trees and imagining grand tales of mischief and magical creatures his 7 to 8-year-old mind could only hope existed. He loved the way the trees and flowers smelled. He adored finding all the little critters who were so unuse to people they would come to him with no hesitation. He never felt alone. His favorite time of day was waking up early and watching the forest emerge from the morning fog right before the sun lit the forest in an ethereal illuminating glow. The saddest time in his childhood he could recall was when Summer was over and he would have to leave and go back to the cold, less welcoming, city. He always found comfort in his mother telling him they would be back the next year, and that one day, the forest would be his to protect. As a kid he never thought anything of this, it wasn't until he was older did he understand.
Markus wasn't sure how he came into being, he just remembered appearing one day. Ā He didn't always have a body, that slowly came over time. He didn't know who he was or where he came from, who made him, or if anyone made him at all. He was just...thereĀ and he had one purpose. Protect the forest and everyone who resided in it. So that's what he did. He had seen many years come and go before he came across anyone. When he came across the magical creatures, they began to worship him as a god. He didn't like that. He wasn't a god. He was just...there. Fulfilling a duty. When he came across the humans he wasn't sure what to think about them. The race was young but they seemed to multiply like rabbits. They had a natural curiosity and a tendency towards violence. When the Great Hunts began and he witnessed the massacre of hundreds of creatures for sport, he grew vengeful. He brought about a plague and famine so terrible it killed hundreds of thousands, and all who came to the forest--which seemed lush despite what was ravaging the lands-- he would make sure never left. He wasn't aware of how many humans he killed, he only remembered when it stopped. When a small blonde human child with bright blue eyes came to him and told him that he would give his life to him if he gave mankind one more chance. The innocence that he witnessed and how the child bravely faced down a being with god-like powers with no care to their own safety touched Markus deeply. He was once again reminded of the innocence mankind could hold. He accepted the child's offer, but he didn't trust humans completely. So he made that child and all his descendants a āGuardianā in charge of ensuring that the forest and all within remained a secret. However, he made the child aware that if he lost faith in mankind again he would not hesitate to finish what he started.
Fast forward a good few thousand years later we now have Simon. Simon ended up having a falling out with his family after he came out as gay. Ā It ended up with him leaving home and not speaking with his parents for over twenty years. Now he was thirty-years-old, single, stuck in a dead-end job, and he gets a call that his mother was on her death bed. Simon at first isn't sure if he's going to go and see her since the blood between them was so tainted. However, he always regretted not being there when his dad died, so sucking it up he goes to visit. It's an...emotional visit, but it ends with his mother giving him the deed the land that they owned, and the storybook she used to read to him as a kid. She dies the next day.
Grieving in a strange manner, Simon decided to take a small vacation to his old family cottage in hopes that it will give him closure. It's odd being there again, and strangely, it feels like he's coming home. The cottage is well taken care of and mostly stocked with things, like wood, and even fresh food. Simon assumed that his parents paid someone to manage the place while they were gone and it was their stuff. He expected to meet them at one point but they never showed. Still, he paid it no attention, sure they would turn up eventually and he would explain his presence. Simon feels a bit empty staying at the cottage the bad memories he had with his parents overriding the good. That night he decides to read the storybook. He remembered when his mother would read it to him every night before he went to sleep. It's actually more of a tragic tale with a subdued happy ending, but he feels connected with the child willing to give his life for mankind. He remembered wondering as a kid if any of it was real, but as he grew older--or perhaps he was just bitter-- he brushed it all aside as useless fairytales his mother would tell him to get him to sleep. The next morning he decides to leave, not even sure why was there in the first place. Ā He is rather surprised when he steps outside and finds a tall, handsome, brown-skinned, male standing before him. However, that isn't what shocks him...this male has...pointed ears. Like...an elf. Even more shocking, he bore a striking resemblance to the forest god in his storybook. Simon blinks, unable to say anything but the "male" speaks for him.
"So, you're the new human guardian... compared to your predecessors your gene pool has...declined greatly."Ā
Did I mention that Markus is kind of a dick when this starts? From here on out, it is a slow burn romantic comedy, with a bit of angst, and a hell of a lot of human/ancient "god" with no humor/trying to learn humor moments. xD
So yeah, this had already gotten hella long so I'm going to stop it here! But this is their backstory of how this AU starts! For those of you who donāt know I started this on Twitter, but the character limits are a pain so I never went this far into it. I also ran a poll and people seem to still use tumblr so even if itās minimal. I figured I could post stuff like this over here and link it to other places. :3 So if people like this I'll do more. I still have plenty of Simarkus ideas!
