Welcome to Jericho
"This is the land of the free!" Markus shouted. "This is the land of rights! Of equality! And we will show those humans that we are not androids, but that we are peaceful!" North sighed and shook her head. Connor looked up at Markus. So this was him; the android that others looked up to. This was definitely something to look at. He made his way up to him, seeing Markus sitting in a chair, thinking. Connor pulled his beanie down over his AI and went to him. "Hello," Connor waved. "I am Connor." Markus looked up with an odd look. "... Well, Connor, you don't need to talk like that anymore," he said. "You are a deviant, are you?" "Yes," Connor nodded, but feeling a pain in his chest for lying. "I see," Markus nodded, standing up. "I haven't seen you around here." "I heard about Jericho," he stated. "And I figured that it would be right for me to come." Markus nodded and walked to him. "Quite an outfit you got going on there." Connor smiled, Markus smiling back. "Well I'd love for you to stay and chat, but I'm sort of busy." "Wait," Connor put his hand up. He was curious. Recently, he got an update where his skin became for sensitive. "Did you get the update?" "... update? What update?" Connor went over and poked Markus's side. Markus jumped back, squeaking. "Wh-what...!?" "So you did." "What happened...!?" "Well..." Connor grinned, remembering the first time he reacted to this ticklish sensation with Hank. "You are a ticklish android." "... ticklish...?" Markus walked to him. "You're new here, right? So... what does this mean?" "It means you can be more relatable to humans, feeling skin touches like pain or sensitivity. Like this." He wiggled his fingers on Markus's side, him snorting and pushing his arms away. "Okahahay...! Haha...! I get it," Markus nodded. "... it looks like you enjoyed it," Connor teased. "Wh-what? N-no, I didn't...!" Markus defended, even though it was a blatant lie. "Perhaps you need another demonstration?" "C-Connor wait...!" Markus walked back, giggling from anticipation. Thanks to Hank, Connor learned all about teasing and tickling techniques. He stepped forward, smiling. "Why do you look so nervous?" Connor could only giggle. "It doesn't hurt." "L-let's think this through!" But it was too late. Connor slapped his hands on his side, Markus giggling from the anticipation of when he was going to start. Moments later, Connor's fingers trailed up and down, scratching his ribs and tapping on his sides. "Pfftahahahahahaha!! Wahahahahait!!" "There is no waiting in tickling and war," Connor teased, digging his fingertips into his armpits. Markus squealed and planted his hands at his sides, but it didn't help anything. Truth be told, Connor could also tell Markus was stressed. Stressed leaders don't help. So this was not only answering his question, but Connor felt happy when he tickled someone, hearing them laugh. It was the perfect chain reaction for him. "Cohohahahahannor!! Hahaha!!" "Yes?" "Pleeheeheeaase stahahahahahap!!" "Hmm..." As Connor pretended to think, his fingers were tapping on Markus's ribs. Markus squirmed and giggled and snorted. "... no." He lifted Markus's shirt quickly so that Markus wouldn't be aware and blew quick raspberry on his stomach. Markus squealed as his knees gave out him sliding down the wall to the ground. "GAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! PLEEHEEHEAHAHAHAHAHAHASE!!" "But your laughter is quite adorable," Connor smiled. "I never knew an android could snort so much." With that, he blew a raspberry on his side, Markus slapping his hands over his blushing face, kicking his feet. Connor giggled and finally stopped, Markus gasping for air on the ground. He offered a hand, Markus reluctantly taking it. "Wh-what... what was that... for...?" he panted, wiping away from tears of joy. "You seem stressed. If you want to be a leader, stress must be dealt with." Markus panted before giving a smile, patting Connor's head. "I think I'm going to like you as an addition, Connor," Markus replied. "Welcome to Jericho."
Markus Lee: Another young, black man from Kansas City is dead! Please take a listen to a 2010 interview with Markus. You can hear the man that he was destined to be. You can hear his innocence, his intellect, and his determination to live. I don't hear the voice of a "thug." Β I hear the voice of a young man who became what society deemed him to be and started living that life. I'm not justifying any of his wrong-doings, I am raising awareness that theΒ violenceΒ has to stop. He, like many others, was another victim of a fatherless home, unfortunate living conditions, and a life completely void of love. We have to save our young people! When I close my eyes, I can hear my little brother speaking. This story hurts my heart; it hits close to home. I wasn't able to save Markus from that lifestyle, but I will do everything in my power to save my brother, Dawon.
"I'm not trying to tell you I have a halo and angel wings. I might have half a wing. I'm not disputing that I'm a street dude, but I'm not this monster they try to say I am. Does it make me a bad guy because I'm from where I'm from?" -Markus Lee (2010)
Β Nadia Pflaum, the reporter who originally profiled him for The Pitch shares her last moment with Markus:
He called me last week and we talked about the rough time he was having trying to find a place to live and a job. I told him that he should come over to my office (with theΒ Midwest Innocence Project) and volunteer and he was like, βYeah, thatβd be a good look!β And he was gonna call me back with his number as soon as he got a phone of his own. And then I heard the news. I really thought Iβd see him again. I was rooting for him. I donβt know why Iβm surprised, but I am, and Iβm really, really sad. But Iβm glad that we got a chance to get to know him, and to introduce him to the people in this city who had the heart to listen.
