Only By Prayer
âAfter Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, âWhy couldnât we drive it out?â He replied, âThis kind can only come out by prayer.ââ - Mark 9:28-29
This kind can only come out by prayer. Only by prayer. Prayer. PRAYER.Â
Last night, I missed the usual Wednesday bible study but I ended up creating my own mini (and by mini, I mean two people) bible study! With who, you ask?! With my sister! Actually, I didnât create it but my sister came up to ask me if I wanted to have a bible study session with her. I know youâre thinking:Â âOh, cool. Thatâs nice!â But you probably donât understand why this is worth the excitement.Â
For those who donât know, my sister and I donât really have a close relationship. We donât squeal over boys together. We donât talk about our problems. We donât share our opinions and thoughts. There'll be those super rare moments when we share our problems but that's only when there's absolutely no one else and we're in deep desperation. But overall weâre usually polar opposites and just donât interact with each other much. Almost like two strangers living in one house, except that weâre connected by blood. But that slowly started to change last year. A prayer that Iâve been praying since 2012/2013 (yes, I know the year) is for my sister to come to accept Christ and for her to have a desire to search & reach out in faith. I've been praying for us to have an open intentional relationship and opportunities for us to do so. And trust me, it was so damn hard. I want to be intentional with her so many times but every time I try, it always end up as me walking away awkwardly. And when she tried to reach out to me, it was so weird to me (because the idea of my sister sharing was foreign to me) that my first automatic response was to jokingly say: âEw, who are you?! So weird.â I know that I like to joke and play around a lot⌠but that was the one time I regret doing so. It was just hard to get close. It was hard to be real to each other. It was also especially hard because we were on different journeys in life⌠we had different values and morals. We had opposite opinions on things. Even our faith was different - she wasnât sure of Christianity for the longest time, whereas I was sure.
But praise the Lord for how our relationship is shifting. If you told me that she confessed her struggles in front of everyone, I would be like âAre you sure it was my sister?â If you told me that my sister told me she looks up to me, I would laugh in your face (although I donât know why she would look up to me⌠I fail so many times as a sister and friend). If you told me that I would be the one to keep her accountable, I would laugh spitting in your face. If you told me that we would start having one-on-one bible studies, I would laugh harder in your face. If you told me that we were going to have late night talks about faith, boys, and life, I would be like âHA. STOP JOKING.â But here we are in 2016 - sitting in our rooms, discussing Genesis together. Here we are, studying the bible together for the very first time last night. Here we are, sitting at 3am, talking about faith, struggles, boys, and life. Here we are, on the couch where she said that she looks up to me and sheâll miss me when I leave for school. Here we are, joking how thereâs no one to sleep talk to her in the middle of night. Here we are, joking how she wonât wake up to my awesome presence (lol jks).Â
How did we even get to this point? What happened in between? A prayer that Iâve been praying since 2013âŚ. I am finally seeing it come to harvest. To life. And I didnât even do anything. Well, I tried to do tangible things but it never worked. But through prayer and through God, something happened.Â
Itâs like when the disciples asked Jesus why they couldnât drive out the demons. They can try all they want but at the end of the day, it was only through prayer and Jesus that the demon could leave the guy. This kind can only come out by prayer.Â
Three years of praying. Three years of waiting (and Iâm still waiting because I know this isnât the end). Three years of many awkward attempts to grow closer. Three years. I am now seeing that prayer come to fruition⌠wow. Just wow. Do you see why this is so exciting now?! And if you still donât, well then⌠at least pretend to share my excitement haha.Â
So friendsâŚ
