I didn't fall in love with Ghostlight right away. There are a few Poets songs I don't really like, but "Black Waters" hit different. Beautiful lyrics, music, Marko... finally something new after four years. Of course it was a shock and euphoria! But from the very first vocal line, I started doubting its quality. I hoped the live version would change it (spoiler: it didn't).
As for the video — I thought, "Can I brighten it up so that at least something is visible?" And I actually managed to do it, and the result surprised me. Yes, the original has better quality, but still... The picture was gray, some kind of filter, everything dark and lifeless. I adjusted brightness and contrast — but you can see, the bright parts are now too bright, even though I tried not to ruin the colors. I'm no specialist, but at least I tried to fix mistakes that should have been obvious during production. Instead, beautiful lyrics were ruined by poor visuals.
Let's not forget: Poets have a video for "Carnival of Rust", which won "Best Finnish Music Video of All Time". There's "Locking up the Sun", shot with mannequins, costumes, and the band playing both musicians and audience — and the meaning of the song was actually shown. Carnival "Daze", "Choice Millionaire" hidden in the dark depths of an unknown machine, "Love will come to you"... And now — filtered "Dancing on broken glass", blurry "The Sweet Escape", gray "Black Waters". Savvy?
In the "Black Waters" credits, there's a gaffer — the person responsible for lighting on set. So why was he there if Hakala ruined the light completely?
I used to worry about the lyrics. Now I worry about the technical side. Why didn't the band think of ways to show themselves in a better light after a long break? I know videos shot on iPhones that turned out great. And the guys definitely have iPhones. Plus, they have a qualified designer, someone who made ringtones for phones, and two photographers. Why bring in an outsider?
Do you remember "Temple of Thought", shot in a studio? That version is so warm and cozy it makes you want to cry. What stopped them from making "Black Waters" in that style? Anything would have been better than what we got.
Once again: I'm not a hater. I love Poets of the Fall sincerely and deeply. But I'm concerned about what's been coming out in recent years — especially compared to their former greatness💔

Today is also another birthday — it's been nine years since I discovered Poets of the Fall. I'll say right away: it was a shock 😄 Over the years, I've said and felt so much that the following years just turned into retelling. But nine years is a long time. And I'm surprised myself that my interest in something lasts this long.
Even though the guys go quiet sometimes, I've been listening to them for so long that I know the music and lyrics by heart, and I still discover something new! And most importantly — they still inspire me. I may not write as often now, but today I'll show something that came to me spontaneously, as a reminder of their influence.
And of course, thanks to this love for the band, this channel exists too)) Everything is connected, and separating one from the other would be hard — even painful.
So let's not dwell on the sad stuff. I'll just wish for stability and congratulate myself on this discovery that keeps adding little signs of life to it.
