Minimalism & BLOCK
As much as I appreciate minimalism and the whole concept behind it, I’m not very savvy when it comes to designers who adopt it. Last week Mark Farrow’s designs were introduced to my class, and I’ve decided to further my research on him. Farrow is very important in the design industry and is well known for his minimalism, solidity in colours, however he is also very traditional. In an interview with designboom.com he was asked which artists influenced his ‘tremendous sense of color and simplicity’ which resonates throughout his projects - here was his reply ;
“Our work was described not so long ago as ‘minimalism in colour’, which I really quite like. One obviously takes influences and inspiration from everywhere and everything, be it art, fashion, architecture, though not especially graphic design oddly enough. But we have been at this a long time now and I’d like to think that the aesthetic is the studio’s own at this point, though you should never stop looking at what is around you. Also, we have been lucky enough to work with some fantastic industrial designers, as clients, Jasper Morrison, Marc Newson, Terence Woodgate and Ross Lovegrove, and it’s inspirational to work with people who’s work you really admire, you learn a lot from how these people work and think. ” MARK FARROW
This simplicity in design is shown through one of his major works with Peyton and Byrne, a British bakery brand. The brands identity is shown through the simplicity in packaging and use of block colours. Although traditional, his expertise use with block colours in design really brings out the beauty in the simplicity.
