"Marked for Death" and the Music of Becoming Ruinously Alive
There are records that brush against darkness. And then there are records like Marked for Death—records that live within it, feed from it, and rise through it like smoke curling from a funeral pyre.
Emma Ruth Rundle has always played in minor keys and mournful hues, crafting sonic architecture from grief and spectral longing. But this offering… it is different. Heavier. Stranger. Beautiful in a way that feels dangerous. It moves through sorrow, without being weighed down, yet luminous with pain.
Having stood beside giants like Deafheaven and Earth, Rundle has earned her place in the hall of haunted voices. Her past work—Some Heavy Ocean, Electric Guitar One, and the howling rites of Marriages—prepared her for this invocation. Marked for Death is a reckoning. The strings ring like church bells soaked in blood. The drums are distant thunder. And her voice pulls them from the wound.
From the opening lines—“Who else is going to love someone like you that’s marked for death?”—we are cast into a storm of doomed intimacy. There’s no pretense here, no metaphor to hide behind. This is the sound of someone asking the abyss to answer. And it does.
Guitars swell into shoegaze fuzz, but it’s never indulgent—each distortion pedal is a dagger turned inward. Tracks like “Medusa” and “Heaven” evoke the golden decay of 4AD’s early ghosts, while Rundle’s calm and searing delivery evokes Dolores O’Riordan reborn in a moonlit crypt.
“Heaven” is the climax of it all—hymnal, aching, thunderous. “I can see fire… I can see in heaven,” she wails, and we believe her. There’s divinity in her despair. Her most devastating line? “The only church I’ll ever know is in the Earth.” This is not nihilism—it’s a sacrament.
And then… silence. The final track, “Real Big Sky,” is sparse as breath in cold air. Voice, guitar, the hum of a dying amp—this is what it sounds like to surrender. To awe. To beauty. To death, yes—but also to something beyond it. Something wordless. Something holy.
With Marked for Death, Rundle raises altars. And in doing so, she becomes the storm herself.
