If I’m not very much mistaken this is the first hip-hop tack to make it onto these illustrious pages. Por qué? Hard to say, I can only speak for myself but I like hip-hop. Maybe this goes someway/where towards an explanation – I feel like I could write pages and pages about The Fall or Pavement and feel as if I owned the topic almost as much as Mark E. or Malkmus. Hell I would be the subject since the way I talk about those bands is built on years of being affected by their music and a corollary sense of ownership. I just don’t have the legitimacy or points of reference to talk satisfactorily about rap records (Hip Hop? hip-hop? I told you so). Maybe there’s something more sinister at work. Perhaps there’s a subconscious racism in my white-liberal-broadsheet-reading mind that balks at violence and misogyny that I see as an obvious and genius literary device when it comes from Nick Cave. The answer’s probably not as simple as that but not quite as complicated as I’d hope.
Anyhow this track deserves some blog-and-re-blog word-of-mouth. The irony being that the thing that first drew me in was the oh-so-middle-class reference to “stuffed zucchini flowers, mix ricotta with the egg”. Apparently Action’s a well respected “grill-chef”.
Hey Action, I think you’ll find its pronounced barbeque and courgette in English.   Â
And I hope you’re gonna deep-fry those courgette flowers in a tempura batter… now you’ve got me on familiar turf.
And ricotta means twice-baked. So…
Yours apologetically,
Loz
