MARIUS NESET - BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

Great performance!

At the 2017 Polar Music Prize Ceremony in Stockholm, Norwegian saxophonist Marius Neset performed a tribute to laureate Wayne Shorter. 

Performance Details: Neset performed Shorter's composition "Beauty and the Beast" (from the 1974 album Native Dancer).

Ensemble: He was accompanied by The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Hans Ek, along with the Polar Music Prize band.

Context: The performance took place on June 15, 2017, in front of Wayne Shorter himself. It was widely viewed as a symbolic "hand-off" of jazz innovation to a new generation.

A primeira impressão que se tem ao ouvir «In the ring», de Marius Neset, é a de que se está perante um novo Michael Brecker, o que, aliás, até é incentivado pela editora de Lion, a ACT, que promove o disco, e o saxofonista em particular, com uma citação do The Guardian que o descreve como sendo possuidor, tanto da pujança de Brecker, como da delicadeza de Jan Garbarek.Todavia, algumas audições mais tarde, é possível perceber que de Brecker, Neset apenas herdou o tom e uma certa forma de enfrentar as peças, como o recurso aosostinatos que se podem ouvir um pouco por toda a duração de «In the ring». Quanto a Jan Garbarek, esqueçam. É outra coisa.

Ein Jahr gewartet. Gefreut. Gefiebert. Alle Melodien im Kopf. Organisiert bis ins kleinste Detail.

Und dann: eine große Wolke aus Musik, aus unglaublich beeindruckenden Menschen, aus Umarmungen und Worten.

Gerade aus der Wolke gefallen. Zwei Konzerte, eine berauschende Jam-Session später. Einen Blumenstrauß in der Hand. Warme Worte. Und der einzige Gedanke: wie privilegiert ich doch bin, mit diesen Musikern zusammenarbeiten zu dürfen.
