Chapter 1
Dear Diary,
I have so much to tell you about! Right now, Iâm on a plane to China with maman to visit our family, and Iâve been given a special mission by Master Fu while Iâm traveling! Now, I know what youâre thinking: How am I able to travel seeing that Iâm Ladybug? Donât worry, we made special arrangements. See, it all happened like thisâŠ
âMaster?â Marinette called, poking her head through the door to his shop.
âAh, Marinette, what fortuitous timing,â he said, perking up as she entered and holding up a jar. âCan you open this for me?â
Marinette smiled, a hint of amusement in her eye as she twisted the lid off easily.
âThank you very much,â he said, eagerly biting into a pickle with a crunch. âNow, what is on your mind?â
âWell,â she said, taking a seat on the mattress and pressing her palms between her thighs. âI have a bit of a dilemma.â
âHave you lost your Miraculous?â Master Fu tensed, but Tikki flew out of her purse with a laugh.
âNo, my Miraculous is safe, but there is still a bit of a problemâŠâ she exchanged looks with Tikki and pursed her lips. âMy mom wants to take me on a trip with her to visit our family in China.â
Master Fu froze briefly, seeming as if heâd realized something before he pressed his lips into a line and stroked his beard.
âAh, you are torn because you cannot fulfill your Ladybug duties while away,â he nodded in understanding.
âTikki and I have already come up with a solution, if you think itâs okay. If not then Iâm sure I could come up with an excuse to stay home with my dad,â she said, holding up assuring hands.
âWhat is it that you propose?â He quirked a brow.
âWell, a few months ago, Chat Noir and I swapped Miraculouses, and I was thinking that maybe we could do it again for the time being,â she said, tapping her index fingers together. âTikki will stay here with Chat Noir to purify any akumas, and Iâll take Plagg with me to China. Just for a week!â
âItâs a viable option, but do you really think that Chat Noir can manage on his own?â Master Fu said pointedly.
âI trust him,â she nodded then, averting her gaze, winced sheepishly, âbut just in case would it be alright if I left Trixx and Wayzz with Rena Rouge and Carapace?â
Master Fu smirked, standing up and retrieving the Miracle Box from its hiding place and opening it up to her. He removed his own Miraculous and offered it to her as she took the fox necklace.
âThank you, Master!â She said, perking up considerably.
âAs repayment, there is something that I want you to do for me in China,â he said, and Marinette tilted her head to one side.
âWhat is it?â She asked as he dug through a drawer for a notepad and pen.
âThere is somewhere that I would like you to go. Consider it a special mission,â he said as he scribbled instructions down.
âOh? Where?â She inquired, interested piqued.
âYouâll find out when you get there,â he said, tearing the page and passing it to her. âPlagg should be able to help you find it if he remembers.â
She surveyed the note with pursed lips for a moment before tucking it away in her purse with the other Miraculouses and heading for the door.
âThanks again, Master Fu,â she called over her shoulder.
âNo problem. Oh, and, Marinette?â She paused in the doorway and quirked a brow. âHave a good trip. Iâll see you when you get home.â
She smiled and nodded before disappearing out the door, and Master Fu sat back on the mat thoughtfully.
âSo, the time has finally come,â he said to himself with a sigh. âGood luck, Marinette.â
***
Alya and Nino were more than happy to step up and help Chat of course, I only hope that they can look away from each other during the battle long enough to help out. Those two are inseparable lately since I revealed their identities, so it was easy enough to track them down.
âAm I interrupting?â
Alya and Nino jerked away from each other, eyes wide until they realized who was standing in Alyaâs balcony doorway.
âLadybug!â
âI need to ask you two for a favor,â she said, stepping into the room and placing her hands on her hips. âConsider it a special mission.â
âSure thing, dudette,â Nino tipped his hat.
âYeah, anything you need!â Alya echoed, perking up as Ladybug tossed them their Miraculous boxes.
âI have to go out of town for some secret uncover work, and I need you two to assist Chat Noir while Iâm gone. Iâm leaving him my Miraculous in case an akuma attacks, but he wonât be able to do it alone. Can I count on you two?â
âTotally!â Alya nodded, fastening her necklace.
âWe wonât let you down,â Nino said confidently, and Ladybugâs face softened into a proud smile.
âThanks, you two. Iâm glad I can always rely on you,â she said, backing toward the balcony and tossing her yoyo across the street. âIâll retrieve your Miraculouses when I get back. Iâm counting on you!â
Iâm really happy for them, but also a little jealous because I wish that Adrien and I could be like that. Then we could all go on double dates to the movies, but I feel like Iâd accidentally spill my drink in his lap and ruin the mood. Truthfully, I have a long way to go before Iâm ready to be in a relationship with Adrien. Besides, he loves Kagami right now anyway, so I have to keep trying to get him to notice me. Then one day we can get that house and three kids and a hamster named-
Her pen skidded as the plane hit turbulence, and she held onto her seat until it passed.
Anyway, Chat Noir didnât take the news as well, but I guess that was to be expected. He really is in love with me which is incredibly sweet, but my heart will always belong to Adrien.
âYouâre leaving?â Chat gasped, mask furrowing and lips pursing into a pout. âHow long will you be gone?â
âJust a week,â she said reassuringly, but he threw his head back with a whine.
âI canât see you for a whole week?â He said incredulously.
âYouâll be fine. Rena Rouge and Carapace are gonna help you,â she said, patting his shoulder.
âBut I wonât get to see you for a whole week,â he reiterated, and she chuckled in amusement.
âIâll bring you back a souvenir, how about that?â She promised, ducking around the corner of the building. âReady?â
Chat puffed his cheeks grumpily but turned around his corner as well. In a flash of light, they dropped their transformations and passed their respective jewels to their partner.
âIâll see you when I get back, chaton,â she said sincerely, giving his hand a gentle squeeze.
âI miss you already.â
Chat Noir is always so dramatic, but I suppose he has nothing on his kwami.
She paused her writing to peek into her purse where the lazy bones was sleeping. Like owner, like kwami she supposed.
Those two really are a perfect pair, always full of silliness. In fact, Plagg gave me a bit of trouble the night before while I was trying to finish packing.
âMy, my whatâs in here?â Plagg asked, lifting the lid of Marinetteâs secret gift chest, and she raced over to shut it, cheeks pink.
âDonât snoop around! Youâre a guest, remember?â She scolded, but Plagg was already floating across the room to get into something else.
âYou sure do have a lot of pictures of this boy on your wall. Someone got a crush?â he remarked, looking a little too smug as he batted his eyelashes, and Marinette puffed out her cheeks.
âNone of your business,â she said stubbornly, crossing her arms over her chest.
âWell, he looks like a bit of a flake to me.â
âTake that back! Adrien is the nicest, most incredible and handsome-â she stopped short under Plaggâs taunting smirk, turning away once more to hide her blush. âDonât tell Chat Noir.â
âMy lips are sealedâŠat a cost.â
âWhat do you want?â She quirked a brow, and he rubbed his greedy hands together with a cackle.
That mangy cat burned a hole in my allowance buying cheese.
Part of her missed Tikki, but she knew leaving her behind was for the best. Paris needed someone to purify the akumas, and she needed to find whatever it was that Master Fu wanted her to see.
Iâm excited to see my family, but also kind of nervous. We havenât visited since I was really little, and I barely speak any Chinese. Hopefully they like meâŠIâll update you as soon as I can. Bye for now, diary.
She closed the cover and leaned her head back with a contented sigh. She hoped that Chat Noir would be okay back in Paris. Of course, she trusted him, but she still worried and had to keep telling herself that everything would be fine. If Master Fu approved then surely things would all work out. She fished out the note heâd given her and read over it once more with a creased brow wondering what it could be.
âWhatâs that, dear?â Her mother asked, lowering her book, and Marinette folded the note back quickly.
âOh, nothing, just an old note from school I found in my bag,â she said with a nervous grin.
âWell, you should try to get some sleep. Itâs still going to be a while before we land,â Sabine advised.
âKay,â she tucked the note back into her front pocket and shifted to recline her seat a little.
âGood night, sweetie,â Sabine leaned over to kiss her cheek. âWeâll be in China when you wake up.â
âNight, maman.â
Several hours later, her mother shook her shoulder, and she sat up, blinking against the sunlight. Sabine pointed out the window with a smile, and Marinette perked up, pressing her hands on either side to peer out.
Marinette tapped her knees impatiently as she sat on the floor of Master Fuâs massage parlor. Nearby, Master Fu, himself, was opening the phonograph hiding the Miraculous, placing the returned Bee Comb back inside. Sheâd only just arrived several minutes ago, and heâd given a relieved sigh when she held the briefly lost Miraculous up.
However, she didnât watch as he set it back where it belonged. Instead, she stared off into the distance, her mind muddled and messy. Thoughts ran rampant at a thousand miles per hour, crossing and clashing and crashing as she tried making sense of the scene thatâd played out in front of her.
How could anyone say that? About their own daughter, no less.
âMarinette.â
She blinked. âHuh?â She looked up and found Master Fu sitting in front of her.
âI said, thank you for returning the Bee Miraculous, Marinette.â He smiled and bowed, hands pressed together. âI knew I chose you for a reason.â
She blushed and rubbed the back of her neck. âOf course, Master Fu. Iâm still really sorry about losing it in the first place.â
He shrugged. âWe all make mistakes. Is there something the matter?â
âNo, masterâŠ.â She looked down and tapped her knees, but then looked back up. âWell, actually, yes. I need to be somewhere soon.â
âI see, well, you are free to leave.â
âThank you, Master Fu.â She bowed briefly and stood up. Then, turning to Tikki, she asked, âDo you have enough energy for another transformation, Tikki?â
Her kwami nodded. âMmhm. Just say the magic words.â
Marinette smiled and brushed the hair over her earrings away. âSpots on!â
-
She landed on the roof of Le Grand Paris and glanced around before de-transforming.
âUm, Marinette, this isnât your house.â
âI know, Tikki,â she said, stepping over to the roof access door.
âBut you need to pack to go to New York City with Mme. Bourgeois! She wonât be happy if youâre late!â
âIâm not going with her,â she said, looking over her shoulder at Tikki. âIâve got something more important to do.â
She raised her fist to knock but faltered. There was a tug on her purse strap, and she looked down at Tikki.
âMarinette,â she whispered, âwhat are you doing?â
She opened her mouth to speak, but a crash cut her off. She gasped and stepped back, but then heard a furious cry, followed by a choked sob. âWhy wonât you love me!â
Marinette faltered, but tightened her fist and swallowed down her fear. She looked at Tikki, who retreated into her purse, giving a small, reassuring smile as she went.
âOkay,â she breathed, âhere goes nothing.â
There was a moment of silence before she went back to sobbing. Guilt and pity twisted her gut painfully as she stood there, listening to the girl whoâd bullied her for years in the most vulnerable state sheâd ever been.
Whatever hatred or rivalry theyâd had, she didnât care. This was about more than past judgements and retribution. Someone pettier mightâve chalked it all down to poetic justice, but Marinette put it at a tragic childhood that no one shouldâve ever endured.
The blonde girl jumped and swung an arm. She instinctively jumped away, dodging it by an inch. Her arch-nemesis scowled at her, running mascara turning her tears black and making the red of her bloodshot eyes pop out. âWhat part of leave me alone donât you understand⊠Oh, itâs you.â Venom dripped from her voice. âWhat do you want, Dupain-Cheng? Youâve already won.
She looked down at the daughter of the mayor whoâd always seemed invincible on her pedestal. Pity coiled in her stomach and her heart bled. Swallowing down her hesitation, she balled her hands into fists and took a deep breath. âIâm not going to New York.â
The blonde girl didnât give an answer. She sat silently and Marinette watched her.
âBecause sheâs exceptionalâŠ.â She curled up, drawing her knees to her chest. âSheâs everything Iâm not and⊠and IâŠ.â Her face scrunched up, something between anger and misery crossing her features. âI wanted to be her⊠ever since I was a little girl.â
She stepped over tentatively before sitting down next to her. âDo you want to talk about it?â
âDaddy used to want me to grow up like him. He wanted me to sit in a dusty, old office and sign papers all day, but mother⊠she wanted me to be like her. She wanted me to be her legacy, to be everything that was perfect about her and more.â
âBut you didnât live up to her expectations.â
She reached over to put a hand on her shoulder, but the blonde snapped up and grabbed her ponytail. âIâve modeled my look after her when she was my age, ponytail and everything!â She picked at her jacket. âEven my entire wardrobe has the same color scheme! Thereâs nothing thatâs not her!â
What hatred or sadness had plagued her before was replaced with desperation and fear. She was forced to grab her wrists before she started drawing blood with her nails.
âHey, calm down! Itâs alright!â
âNothing is alright!â She struggled in her grasp, tears streaking her mascara further. âIâm nothing if Iâm not her! Iâm- Iâm-â
âIt doesnât matter what anyone thinks of you, especially your mother. No one can make you be something or someone youâre not.â She shrugged her shoulders and gestured over at the Ladybug themed carpet in the next room over. âLadybug wasnât always a superhero. She wasnât always supposed to save the day. I wasnât always going to be a fashion designer⊠I used to just want to play video games professionally.â
With that, she opened the door and walked out into the hall, daring one last glance into the room at her arch-nemesis.
-
âNino?â
Nino raised his hand up front. âHere!â
Mlle. Bustier scribbled on her clipboard. âRose?â
âPresent!â
âKim?â
Marinette glanced back at Kim, who was in the middle of a conversation with Max. She rolled her eyes and looked back at Mlle. Bustier, who was looking over her clipboard.
âKim?â
The Vietnamese boy turned his attention down to the front of the classroom and flushed red. âUh, here!â
Everyone glanced over at her seat, their eyes lingering on the empty spot next to Sabrina. The redhead, herself, seemed crestfallen, almost depressed.
There was a nudge from her left and she glanced over at Alya.
âBet sheâs busy crying about mommy,â she teased.
She responded with a frown. Out of the corner of her eye, she spied Adrien tensing up. Nino, beside him, looked over then back and up at them.
âTalking about Mlle. Unexceptional?â
âGuys.â She narrowed her eyes. âCome-â
The classroom door opened before she could finish and in came a tanned girl dressed in white. Her blonde hair tumbled down her head, freed from its usual ponytail and a new pair of sunglasses sat on her head. A simple, white designer purse sat at her side.
She sat down then but gave her a final look of gratitude before turning to pay attention. She wouldâve done the same if Alya hadnât nudged her again.
